The top international starter appears to be seven-year-old Dubai Honour from William Haggas' barn. He has been all over the world – four times to Hong Kong already - and won the G1 Tancred Stakes at this distance as recently as April 1 at Rosehill in Australia while carrying 130 pounds. The son of Pride of Dubai can handle any ground and will be ridden by Tom Marquand. His international rating is 118.

Last year's Champions & Chater Cup was won by the globetrotting Rebel's Romance, winner of the 2022 and 2024 G1 Breeders' Cup Turf, but it has been dominated by local horses before that. Defending the home team will be Voyage Bubble, four-time Group 1 stakes winner at Sha Tin and the highest rated runner in the field at 120.
The issue for Voyage Bubble is he has never contested the 1 ½-mile distance since three of his Group 1 stakes wins came at a mile and his last came in the G1 Hong Kong Gold Cup going approximately 1 1/4 miles. But, having won the G1 Stewards' Cup and the G1 Hong Kong Gold Cup, this is Voyage Bubble's chance to sweep the Triple Crown and join River Verdon as the only horse to do so. And, there is a HK$10 million bonus if he wins all three races.

David Hayes is high on Rubylot's chances after winning the Hong Kong Classic Cup for 4-year-olds then a hard-charging fifth in the Hong Kong Derby. A troubled sixth, only beaten three lengths by two Japanese superstars in the G1 QE II Cup, has given Hayes optimism that he can handle the added distance. Unfortunately, he will not be getting weight from his higher-rated rivals.

Five G Patch is only rated 113 at the moment and will also not get any breaks in the weight-for-age event. However, he was second in last year's renewal and third the year before so the distance seems to wake him up no matter how strong the competition is. He might not be a candidate for the win but at long odds, Five G Patch is worth using underneath in vertical wagers.

The added distance of 1 1/2 miles will conduct a tour of Sha Tin's expansive turf course. While it should be a test of stamina, it provides lower-rated horses the opportunity to take some chances since their rider already has confidence in their ability to see out the distance. Unlike most of the races in Hong Kong where the assigned weight is what brings the horses together, in the case of the Champions & Chater Cup, it is the added distance that does.
Dubai Honour has been traveling all over the world. Voyage Bubble's is trying to sweep the Triple Crown at a distance he has never contested. Despite their class edge, they might be vulnerable to others that should make it really difficult and a fun race to watch and wager on.

Redcar report: An extraordinary day of contrasts for winning trainer Beckett
TRAINER Ralph Beckett experienced the contrasts of racing on a day he won't forget. The Hampshire trainer had a 1-8 winner at Redcar when Circios justified short odds under Eddy Greatrex to win The Start Your Racing TV Free Trial Fillies' Novice Stakes. Twenty minutes later, Beckett watched in disbelief as pacemaker Qirat caused one of the greatest Group 1 upsets when holding on to land the Visit Qatar Sussex Stakes, bursting the bubble of 1-3 favourite Field of Gold in the process. As if that wasn't enough, Beckett also had two of his horses dead-heat in an earlier race at Goodwood when Saqqara Sands and Tabiti were inseparable in the Group 3 HKJC World Pool Oak Tree Stakes. Eddy Greatrex was making a rare visit to Redcar and made the long trip north pay off when Circios, a £625,000 daughter of Kingman, owned by Wathnan Racing, pulled clear of Ed Walker's Crystal Dagger by two and three-quarter lengths. Greatrex said: "She's a pretty straightforward filly who's still learning but she quickened nicely. Hopefully, it's a nice stepping stone to future endeavours." It was the fourth winner in a fortnight for Greatrex who has rebuilt his career after quitting four years ago due to injury. The meeting began with a winner in the famous blue silks of Godolphin as Sword Maker justified clear market confidence to strike in the Racing TV Free Trial British EBF Novice Stakes. The son of Pinatubo, who had been 10th of 12 on his debut at Newmarket, looked to be in trouble two furlongs out but quickly put the rest to the sword inside the final furlong. The colt is trained at Newmarket by Saeed Bin Suroor and was ridden by PJ McDonald, who said: "The team was confident he'd take a step forward. He was a bit raw in his early paces, but I liked the way he came home." It was a good day for jockey Jason Hart who scored a quick-fire double on Bamburgh for Middleham's Charlie Johnston and Radiant Beauty for Newmarket's James Owen. Bamburgh, in first-time cheekpieces, looked a far from straightforward ride but battled through to overcome the challenge of the Craig Lidster-trained Triple Force in the Free Racing TV At Handicap. Johnston's Travelling Manager Mark Billingham said: "Jason thought he made hard weather of getting past but he ran on quite well in the end. You get the feeling he has more to give." Radiant Beauty, having her first run for the Owen yard, stretched clear of George Boughey's She's The Duchess in the Marske Fabrications & Engineering Straight Mile Fillies' Handicap. The daughter of Churchill won in the colours of Scott Turner who also scooped the Group 2 Lennox Stakes with Witness Stand on the opening day of Glorious Goodwood. York-based Chris Chapman spent his career as an account manager, selling Kit Kats for Nestle, and he enjoyed a big break at Redcar when the horse he part-owns, Carlton and Co, won the Visit Handicap in good style. The mare is trained at Malton by father and son, Mick and David Easterby, and was positively ridden by Billy Garritty. Chris said: "Billy was confident and thinks she'll win again. We thought she'd win at Pontefract last time out but she lost a shoe." The finale, the AJA Novice Flat Amateur Jockeys' Handicap, was a triumph for 18-year-old Rebecca Hitchen, who won on previous course winner, Sandret, trained by Sam England. "They went a fair pace which suited me," said Yorkshire-born Rebecca, who has now had two winners from four rides – a 50 per cent strike rate!

Belmont, Iowa, Indiana derbies mark July Fourth weekend horse racing

Photo courtesy of Keeneland July 2 (UPI) -- What could be more festive on the July Fourth holiday than the Belmont Derby Invitational at Saratoga, the Indiana Derby and the Iowa Derby? Okay. The "Derby" is an American adaptation of the British invention. But it has been adapted quite successfully, and those races and others promise a happy Independence Day weekend. Back over the Atlantic, the main attractions are Saturday's Coral-Eclipse at Sandown, the Prix Jean Prat in France and the Deutsches Derby. With a lot on the barbecue and attention likely to wander later in the week, here's an abbreviated look at what's on offer. Saratoga Weekend activity at the Spa centers on Friday's $750,000 Grade III Belmont Derby Invitational and Saturday's $500,000 Trade I Belmont Oaks Invitational. There's plenty of quality and a tiny bit of international intrigue without entries from Godolphin. In the Derby field, Charlie Fellowes brings Luther from England after finishing fourth in the French Guineas and well up the track in the Prix du Jockey Club or French Derby. New Century has bounced back and forth across the Atlantic and now is with trainer Brendan Walsh. He was a good third in the Grade I American Turf on Derby Day at Churchill Downs. The locals don't look overpowering. The Oaks is an all-American affair with Nitrogen the standout. The Medaglia d'Oro filly rides a five-race win streak. May Day Ready wasn't ready for Grade 1 competition in Japan in December and didn't handle an off-the-turf assignment in her stateside return. Maybe now? Also on Friday's Saratoga slate are the $400,000 Grade II Suburban at 1 1/4 miles on the main track; the 200,000 Grade III Manila for 3-year-olds at 1 mile on the turf'; the $150,000 Harvey Pack at 5 1/2 furlongs on the lawn and the $150,000 Schuylerville for 2-year-old fillies at 6 furlongs on the dirt. Saturday's undercard has the $175,000 Grade III Kelso at 1 mile on the grass and the $175,000 Grade III Sanford for 2-year-olds. Elsewhere, by division: Filly & Mare Turf Saturday's $250,000 Grade III Robert G. Dick at Delaware Park finds Spanish eyes making her second U.S. start after an earlier career in Germany that included a second in the Group 1 German Oaks. Malibu Beauty looks like the main rival. Turf Sprint Sunday's $150,000 Pea Patch for 3-year-old fillies at Ellis Park is notable for its name more than its field. In the past, the infield at the Western Kentucky track literally was used to grow soybeans. Classic Saturday's $300,000 Grade III Prairie Meadows Cornhusker, once the crown jewel at Omaha's Ak-Sar-Ben racecourse, still attracts star-quality performers to its current Iowa home, including 2024 winner Red Route One. The 3-year-old wars continue Saturday with the $250,000 Iowa Derby at Prairie Meadows and $300,000 Grade III Iowa Derby at Horseshoe Indianapolis. Distaff Accompanying the derbies are Saturday's $225,000 Iowa Oaks at Prairie Meadows and $200,000 Grade III Indiana Oaks. Filly & Mare Sprint The action here is Saturday's $200,000 Grade II Great Lady M at Los Alamitos and $150,000 (Canadian) Grade III Hendrie on the Woodbine all-weather. Juvenile / Juvenile Fillies Friday's $100,000 Prairie Gold Lassie and Saturday's $100,000 Prairie Gold Juvenile at Prairie Meadows may be worth a look. Around the world, around the clock England While taking a pass on the Saratoga Fourth of July festival, Godolphin and jockey William Buick have the early favorite, Ombudsman, in Saturday's Group 1 Coral-Eclipse at Sandown. The 4-year-old Night of Thunder colt, trained by John and Thady Gosden, exits a victory in the Group 1 Prince of Wales's Stakes at Royal Ascot, and his only career defeat was a second behind Almaqam in the Group 3 Brigadier Gerard in his seasonal debut. That one is back, but rated a long shot to repeat the upset. Sosie, Camille Pissarro and Delacroix, on the other hand, are among the clear and present dangers in a deep, excellent field. Seven are entered for Saturday's Group 2 Lancashire Oaks at Haydock Park, with once-defeated Estrange the odds-on early pick. Another by Night of Thunder, she won her 3-year-old debut by 4 1/2 lengths over the same course for trainer David O'Meara and owner Cheveley Park Stud. France Sunday's Group 1 Jean Prat has 3-year-olds going 1,400 meters at Deauville. Germany Sunday's Group 1 Deutsches Derby at Hamburg is 1 1/2 miles for 3-year-old colts and fillies.
