‘I hope you lose..': Ricky Ponting's cheeky message to Marco Jansen before PBKS pacer left IPL 2025 for WTC final preps
With South Africa demanding the return of their WTC-final-bound players ahead of the IPL 2025 Playoffs late last month, Jansen had to leave an in-form Punjab Kings shortly before they made their bid for a maiden title. The left-arm seamer was integral to Punjab's middle and death-overs bowling plans, finishing as the second-highest wicket-taker with 16 scalps in 14 games.
Jansen recently opened up on the bond that he created with head coach Ricky Ponting at Punjab and the former Aussie captain's cheeky message for him as he prepared to leave India for Lord's to take on the defending Test champs, Australia, starting June 11.
'Before I left (India), he (Ponting) just said 'good luck, I hope you do well, but I hope you lose',' the 25-year-old Jansen told ICC Digital.
Jansen, however, thanked Ponting for firming him up with a wave of confidence ahead of a momentous summit clash as South Africa aim to end a long ICC title drought.
'I learnt a lot from him, especially from a mental point of view. He is always positive, and he always sees the good stuff instead of the bad stuff, if it makes sense,' he said.
'And I think that's why he's a legend of the game, because you always lean towards what could happen instead of what could go wrong. For me personally in the IPL, he's helped a lot in that regard, because he always reminds you what could be, what you can do and what could happen instead of what couldn't happen,' he added.

Post accident, Musheer looks to make most out of the present
CHENNAI: When Musheer Khan walked out to bat for Mumbai in the Buchi Babu match against TNCA XI at the Gojan College B Ground on Monday, it was his first domestic red-ball match in India since the Duleep Trophy in September last year. A horrific car accident and a season-ending neck injury meant Musheer had been out of action for several months. He had a sensational Ranji season and was looking to take the momentum forward in the Irani Cup and the tournaments that followed. However, it all came to a pause as Musheer spent away from the cricket field. It was only during the Indian Premier League, Musheer came back into action for Punjab Kings. The Mumbai T20 league and the Mumbai Colts tour of England followed before the Buchi Babu tournament. The life-threatening accident and the time after has given Musheer a new perspective on life. He has learnt to live in the present. "The accident has taught me to not worry much about the future or the past, and enjoy the present, jo bhi uppar wale ne likha huwa hei (This was destined by those above, pointing to god). I also learnt to put my best effort in the present," he said after the day's play on Monday.

Chris Morris namedrops Aiden Markram as one of the biggest draws at SA20 auction
With the SA20 auction fast approaching, former South Africa all-rounder Chris Morris believes Aiden Markram will be one of the headline attractions when the bidding war begins on September 9 in Johannesburg. "Sunrisers haven't retained him, but they do have a right-to-match card, meaning they can match the final bid for him and retain his services," Morris explained, as quoted from SA20. Chris Morris believes Aiden Markram will be one of the headline attractions in the SA20 auction. (AFP) "That opens the door for mind games -- other teams could bid aggressively to push his price high enough to make it difficult for the Sunrisers to bring him back," he noted. Morris identified two franchises that could make a strong play for the Proteas batter. "Two teams stand out to me: MI Cape Town, which would solve their captaincy question -- not that Rashid Khan is doing a bad job -- but having a successful local international captain at number four would be a big boost, especially since they've released Rassie van der Dussen, leaving a vacancy at number three. The other is Pretoria Capitals, who have one of the largest remaining purses. He's a local player, would fill their captaincy role, slot in at number three, and bring strong leadership after Rilee Rossouw's stint last year. Either way, Aiden Markram is going to be hot property," he added. The SA20 has grown rapidly since its launch, and last year's auction saw almost 600 players register from across the globe. This year's list of retained and pre-signed stars already boasts big names such as Nicholas Pooran, Andre Russell, Sunil Narine, and England's Jos Buttler and Jonny Bairstow. As per an SA20 press release, each team was permitted a maximum of 6 retained or pre-signed players, comprising a maximum of three South African and three overseas players, during the player retention window, which closed on 18 July. The teams also strategically completed their six wildcard signings, with all the focus now on the remaining slots and the collective maximum purse of USD 7.4 million, to be spent on the 84 available slots at the auction on 9 September in Johannesburg. For Season 4, a Wildcard player could be any overseas player or a South African player who was part of the team's squad in Season 3. The new season kicks off on December 26, with the auction in early September expected to set the tone for another blockbuster edition of South Africa's premier T20 league.

Asia Cup: Shubman Gill mystery continues as selectors spoilt for choice
New Delhi: How to fit in a brilliant batter like Shubman Gill in a well-oiled T20 set up will be the biggest challenge for India's national selection committee when it gathers on Tuesday to pick the 15-member squad for next month'sAsia Cup in UAE . As of now, the prolific Test captain, who had a dream run in England recently, is not organically fitting into the side which will play the continental showpiece from September 9 to 28. For Ajit Agarkar and his colleagues, the major point of deliberation will be how to fix something that doesn't need to be mended. It's a "scary" conundrum for the selectors but Indian cricket right now is a T20 talent factory with at least 30 players who are ready to come into the national squad with three to four options available for one slot. For the top three positions, there are six cricketers of similar pedigree available. Live Events Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson and Tilak Varma have been phenomenal in national colours through last season but then the ones who are equally good, if not better, happen to be Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan (the IPL Orange Cap winner). In bowling, Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakravarthy and Ravi Bishnoi are jostling for one slot. And the craftiest of them all Yuzvendra Chahal has been ignored for longest time. But then selectors can pick only 15 and those in decision-making positions of T20 team have an interesting perspective. One important member of team management feels that it would be unfair on anyone who has been a first XI regular during the past season to be deprived to accommodate a bigger brand name or star. The other school of thought is that Indian cricket works well with one all-format captain who also becomes the biggest marketing brand -- in this case Gill, who is an obvious choice for a lot of stakeholders going forward. But then to assume this will happen smoothly is oversimplification of the issue. Under Suryakumar Yadav 's able leadership, the Indian T20 squad has a phenomenal 85 per cent record, winning 17 of its last 20 games. None of these games featured Gill and Jaiswal. But there's a catch too. Before Gill and Jaiswal became busy with Test commitments in the past one year, they were playing T20 Internationals s and were doing well including impressive IPLs. Gill was in fact vice captain to Surya before he had to forego T20Is due to Tests. Axar Patel, the Delhi Capitals skipper, became Surya's deputy and performed decently even though he is not considered a long-term leadership candidate. However, Axar will certainly feel shortchanged if Gill supercedes him as Surya's deputy. On Tuesday, if selectors pick Gill in the 15, then they have to play him in the eleven which means one among Sanju, Abhishek or Tilak will have to compromise their batting slots. To include Shubman in the 15could also means dropping Rinku Singh . The big-hitter hasn't done much in head coach Gautam Gambhir's era either for Kolkata Knight Riders or India. In Gambhir's book there's nothing called a designated finisher. So choices won't be easy. Choice of pacers With Hardik Pandya being as good a frontline pacer as one can get and Jasprit Bumrah along with Arshdeep Singh being automatic choices in the line-up, there are three options for the reserve seamer's slot. Harshit Rana looks the favourite as both Prasidh Krishna and Mohammed Siraj are being considered red-ball specialists. With hoem series against the West Indies starting October 2, it is understood that Bumrah might not be required against the relatively weak visitors side as Prasidh and Siraj will be fresh and raring to go. Choice of spinners Axar Patel, Varun Chakravarthy and Kuldeep Yadav are first three choices and Gambhir's affinity for all-rounders is likely to ensure Washington Sundar in the side. The pitches in Dubai and Abu Dhabi won't be as worn out and slow as they were during the Champions Trophy but there is reasonable help for spin bowlers. Finishers and Keeper-batter Nitish Kumar Reddy and Rishabh Pant are yet to recover from their respective injuries. As a result, Shivam Dube will be the second seam bowling all-rounder after Pandya. The second keeper's slot is a fight between Jitesh Sharma and Dhruv Jurel. Jitesh played some good knocks as a finisher for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in their IPL-winning campaign and is more suited for a lower-order role.
