Raksha Bandhan
. However, authorities decided to shorten it by a week, citing "
critical repair
and maintenance works" to be undertaken in the wake of the heavy rainfall.

Bidhuri noted that this year, over 410,000 yatris visited the holy cave shrine.

With just four days to go for the Raksha Bandhan festival, visitors flocking post offices across Ludhiana to send rakhis and gifts to their siblings were left stranded on Monday after a major technical glitch during the roll-out of advance software IT 2.0, brought all postal services, including rakhi mail bookings through speed post, and registered post, to a complete halt. Along with the visitors, postal staff too expressed frustration over the major technical fallout. (HT Photo) Reportedly, the disruption followed a nationwide software upgrade implemented by the India Post on Monday, which has led to severe service inefficiencies. While upgrading the tech is part of a larger digital overhaul of postal systems across the country, the simultaneous roll-out has caused log in failures and long system buffer times at local post offices, leaving staff helpless and customers frustrated. Notably, the issue isn't new. Several post offices in Ludhiana have been facing erratic services since Thursday, particularly in speed post and registered post both widely used for sending rakhis and festive packages. Explaining the disruptions, Manpreet Singh, a staff at the Millerganj post office said, 'Even after logging into our respective IDs, the system keeps buffering and fails to process the bookings. Raksha Bandhan is our busiest season. With high volumes of bookings and deliveries, it's disheartening to face fuming customers and be unable to help.' Meanwhile, Gagandeep Kaur, a resident visiting the Millerganj branch, said, ' I have been coming here since Thursday hoping to send rakhi to my brother, but every time they ask me to come the next day. It's already delayed, and now I'm not sure if it will even reach him before Raksha Bandhan.' Vandita Jain, another customer at the head post office on Ferozepur Road, shared, 'My son works in Delhi and could not get leave this year. I packed a few goodies to send, but the booking counter staff told me the system is down. I always rely on the post office, but this time I might go for a private courier.' Along with the visitors, postal staff too expressed frustration over the major technical fallout. An employee at the head post office admitted that the situation has been equally taxing for them by stating, 'We're bearing the brunt of public anger every day. The new software was supposed to streamline operations, but its abrupt roll-out has only created more confusion and chaos,' the employee said. Prashant Singla, superintendent of the head post office, acknowledged the problem and assured that services would likely be restored by Tuesday morning. 'The issue occurred because the advanced software was installed simultaneously across India. With a pan-India log in, the system collapsed. We're working on restoring services at the earliest.'

1 2 Jaipur: In the heart of Jaipur's historic Walled City, where vibrant bazaars burst with colour and culture, a glaring contradiction exists. While women make up the majority of shoppers and tourists in these bustling markets, they face a daily struggle that few notice: safe and accessible public toilets. Even so, authorities at the civic bodies and the tourism department boast of the city being tourist-friendly. From Tripolia Gate to Chhoti Chaupar, not a single functional public toilet exists for women. This is despite the area being dotted with shops selling women's clothing, bangles and bridal wear. In Maniharon Ka Rasta, known for its handcrafted lac bangles, 65-year-old shop owner Shabnam Kauser says, "I have been working at this shop for over 50 years but there has never been a toilet for women. I have to walk 700 metres to my house just to use one. Sometimes I hold it in for over three hours, which has begun to affect my health." Her brother adds, "Many women customers request us to suggest a toilet nearby. We try sending them to a nearby Jain temple but the priests often argue and ask us not to send anyone there." And even when they find one, it's filthy. Khazane Walon Ka Rasta, famous for bargain shopping, does have a public toilet near the main road but it is almost invisible. The entrance is hidden behind illegal street vendors and dangerously close to an open transformer. Tipu Kanwar, who works at a garment shop just across the toilet, says, "The toilet is there but a transformer in front of it exploded just six days ago. Now it's covered but most days you can't even see the 'women' sign on the wall because hawkers block the view." Further ahead, in Purohit Ji Ka Katla, another bridal shopping hub, the scene is just as bleak. Most shopkeepers advised against using the nearby toilet, citing unbearable stench and lack of maintenance. Even the one inside Diggi Katla, built by JMC-Heritage, has not been cleaned in months – according to shopkeepers who sit next to it. 50% fall in tourists taking Palace on Wheels; RTDC,private co play blame game
Jaipur: Occupancies have fallen by over 50% in the state's flagship heritage tourist train, Palace on Wheels, in the past two years, with the Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation (RTDC) raising contractual violations by the private company which had taken up operations in 2023-24 at its review meeting on Monday, sources said. In 2024-25, the number of tourists taking the luxury train fell to 685 compared to 811 the year before. In fact, the number has come down to less than 50% when compared to FY19 and FY20, when over 1,500 tourists took the train. In 2023-24, the train was leased to a private company for operation and management (O&M) with an annual fee of Rs 5 crore with an additional 18% on revenues. RTDC officials say the private company is delaying the payments. Even though it recently paid the annual fees, it has not yet deposited the GST. Sources also blamed the laxity of RTDC for the issue. The private company, in a letter to the RTDC MD, stated that the GST was a dispute that had to be resolved. "The private operator of the train has given discounts of up to 40% to sales agents, overshooting the 18% stipulated in the agreement. If the discounts are high, then the corporation loses revenue," said the source. Similarly, the private operator is liable to pay about Rs 75 lakh interest on payment delays, which the RTDC has not pursued in earnest. However, the O&M company is contesting the interest liability. Also, there has been a diversion of destinations, which was not addressed by the corporation. Sources in the corporation alleged violations of the contract as space for the spa and gym in the train was reduced in the name of renovation to make room for an additional berth. Similarly, all income that needed to come to the escrow account did not happen, sources said. The account was mandated by the agreement, but RTDC overlooked the irregularities. While the private company has said that the bookings have been affected due to the reduction in foreign tourist arrivals, the tourism department's numbers show an increase. The arrival of foreign visitors crossed the pre-Covid level in 2023-24 and 2024-25, according to the department. In 2024, 20.68 lakh foreign tourists visited Rajasthan, up from the pre-Covid peak of 17.54 lakh.
