LISBON (Reuters) - Arsenal will bid to defy the odds against Barcelona in Saturday's women's Champions League final in Lisbon, aiming to secure their second title with courage and underrated defiance.
Manager Renee Slegers believes her disciplined side can triumph over the Catalan giants of women's football, who are the strong favourites to win their fourth European title.
"We want to show courage tomorrow. We respect Barca as a team. They are a really good football team, so we are humble, but we are here to win," she told reporters on Friday.
"We have to find ways to win, and I am confident that the momentum of the game will shift. It's important that we deal with every moment really well. We need courage and discipline, and we need to be switched on. If we do all those things well, we can perform well. We believe in our ability tomorrow."
Arsenal forward Alessia Russo echoed Slegers' sentiments.
"We want to show courage tomorrow. We respect Barca as a team," she said. "They are a really good football team, but we are here to win. We have to find ways to win, and I am confident that, if we handle all situations well and stay focused, we can perform well.
"Belief is something we have spoken about a lot as a team this season. We have found lots of different ways to win. It's been a season full of highs and lows, but we've learnt a lot," the former Chelsea and Manchester United striker added.
Veteran midfielder Kim Little, who played in the 2007 final victory against Sweden's Umea, looked back in time when asked about Arsenal's first meeting with Barca in Europe's top club competition during the 2012–13 season, when the London team won 7–0 on aggregate.
"It's incredible for me to still be at the club. We came out on top," Little said. "After 2007 and everything the club has achieved since then, leading the team on this occasion is so special."

FILE PHOTO: Soccer Football - Premier League - Fulham v Manchester City - Craven Cottage, London, Britain - May 25, 2025 Manchester City's Kevin De Bruyne celebrates after playing his last Premier League match for Manchester City Action Images via Reuters/Andrew Couldridge/File Photo (Reuters) -Belgian playmaker Kevin De Bruyne has joined Serie A champions Napoli as a free agent on Thursday, following the end of his glittering 10-year spell at Manchester City. De Bruyne lifted 19 trophies at City since his 2015 move from German side VfL Wolfsburg — a haul that includes six Premier League titles and one Champions League crown. He has also been named the Premier League Player of the Season twice. Regarded as one of the greatest midfielders in Premier League history, the 33-year-old's contract at City expired at the end of the recently-concluded season. "Kevin is proud to be one of us!," Napoli posted on social media platform X. The Belgium captain featured in 40 matches in all competitions for City last campaign, scoring six goals and providing eight assists and helping them qualify for next season's Champions League, after being sidelined by a thigh injury in September. Injuries had limited his appearances in the last two seasons. De Bruyne made 422 appearances in all competitions for City, netting 108 times and registering 177 assists. He has the second-most assists in Premier League history with 119, behind Ryan Giggs (162). Napoli won their second Serie A title in three years after a tight race with Inter Milan. Rugby-Erasmus backs university student Makhaza to be future Springbok
FILE PHOTO: Rugby Union - South African head coach Rassie Erasmus' Press Conference - SARU House, Tygerberg Park, Cape Town, South Africa - March 5, 2025 South Africa head coach Rassie Erasmus during the press conference REUTERS/Esa Alexander/File Photo (Reuters) -Coach Rassie Erasmus does not foresee an immediate Springbok cap for Ntokozo Makhaza, but believes the winger will one day wear the green and gold having been called into the South Africa squad without playing a game of professional rugby. Makhaza, 23, who found out about his selection for the start of the international season on social media, plays for the University of Cape Town in South Africa's Varsity Cup competition and is a reliable goal-kicker and speedy on the wing. He is studying for a degree in psychology and social development and has never been tested against professional players. "It's been a pleasure to work with him," Erasmus told reporters on Thursday. "He's consistently been the top Varsity Cup player, and especially in terms of point scoring, probably one of the best in the competition's history. "You sometimes wonder, is this one of those players who slipped through the cracks? It's been good to see what he brings." Erasmus suggests the June 28 meeting with the Barbarians in Cape Town, and July's two tests against Italy and one versus Georgia, might come too soon, but believes Makhaza could wear the jersey in the future. "We definitely think he's someone who could play for the Springboks one day. It might be a bit early now. He's slotted in really well, but we're also being realistic. Having said that, he's certainly not far off the pace," Erasmus said. "I think he's going to make it one day. And if we hadn't given him this chance, we'd never know." Erasmus revealed there are several players with long-term injuries that are unlikely to feature for the Springboks this year – props Trevor Nyakane and Frans Malherbe, hooker/loose-forward Deon Fourie, and loose-forwards Elrigh Louw and Cameron Hanekom. Better news is the return to fitness in the coming weeks of several World Cup winners, including flanker Pieter-Steph du Toit, number eight Jasper Wiese and scrumhalf Grant Williams. Real Madrid ‘only' team I'd have left Liverpool for: Alexander-Arnold
NEW Real Madrid signing Trent Alexander-Arnold said he joined the 'only' team he would have considered leaving Liverpool for, at his presentation on Thursday. Reds fans jeered Alexander-Arnold after the academy graduate revealed he would leave this summer, but eventually gave him a warm farewell on the last day of the Premier League season. 'It was never a question of where, it was whether to go or not to go,' the 26-year-old defender told a news conference. 'I always knew... if I was to ever leave Liverpool, it would only be to go to Real Madrid, that would be the only club for me... 'I'm not going to say it was easy because I'd been there so long, been a part of it, but eventually, you have to make a decision. 'In my mind, I've made the right one and it's one that I'm very excited about.' The right-back said the record 15-time European Cup winners' history had to be 'respected' and he wanted to add to it. 'A big reason why I joined is to be a part of that amazing history that club's got,' he said. 'Be a part of the success going forward, joining an exciting, young team with a lot of potential.' Alexander-Arnold, who moved for a fee even though his contract was expiring this summer, to speed up his arrival ahead of the Club World Cup, signed a deal until 2031. He joins former Liverpool midfielder and new Madrid coach Xabi Alonso's project after winning a second Premier League title with Arne Slot's Reds. Alonso won the Champions League with Liverpool as a player in 2005 during a remarkable final against AC Milan as the English side fought back from three goals down to triumph in Turkey. 'I grew up a Liverpool fan, being able to see (that game in) Istanbul with the manager now, doing amazing things there, part of an incredible final,' said Alexander-Arnold. 'We've spoken a little bit... I told him that he was a big idol of mine growing up.' England international Alexander-Arnold's quality on the ball and his passing range is reminiscent of Alonso's. 'It probably impacted my game a lot growing up, seeing him pass a ball, I explained this to him as well,' continued the defender. 'Watching him pass a ball, seeing it influenced me to be able to go and train harder and have a great kind of hunger to be able to do that and set standards.' - 'I'll be a sponge' - Alexander-Arnold said he would try to learn a lot from Alonso and was willing to play wherever the coach saw fit, be it in defence or midfield. 'It's not just me who's new here, he's a new manager, he's got to get his ideas across to the whole team,' he said. 'He's shown how amazing he is managerial-wise and as a player, so his knowledge of football is there in abundance and I'm excited, I'll be a sponge around him.' He could make his Madrid debut against Al-Hilal on June 18 in Miami in their Club World Cup opener. Alexander-Arnold will wear the number 12 shirt at Madrid, with 'Trent' on the back rather than his surname. 'I've always found when I travel to Europe, the whole name situation confuses a lot of people,' he explained. 'I just thought let's make it simple, let's make it easy. Trent on the back, be known as Trent.' Madrid, who also signed centre-back Dean Huijsen from Bournemouth, failed to win a major trophy this season under Alonso's predecessor Carlo Ancelotti, but are looking to triumph in the United States this summer. 'We go straight to America for the Club World Cup and our ambition there is to go and win that trophy as well,' said the defender. 'I'm looking to have a great start.' Earlier Alexander-Arnold surprised as he gave a short speech in Spanish at his presentation. 'Signing for a club like Real Madrid does not happen every day. It's a dream come true,' he said. 'I'm conscious that playing for Real Madrid is a big responsibility, but I'm ready to give everything.'
