What sport events to track after IPL 2025 suspension amid India-Pakistan conflict. All you need to know

Hindustan Times10-05-2025

With the playoff race really heating up in IPL 2025, the suspension of the tournament leaves a gap for all cricket and sports fans. But the lack of IPL action on our televisions for the coming week only present an opportunity to turn elsewhere for the fill of sports, with several notable events coming up in the month of May. Here are a few across various sports to keep an eye on through the upcoming weeks before the IPL's likely return.
The country's Sunday cricket fix could come in the form of the Indian women's team, stepping up their preparations for the home World Cup later this year as they play Sri Lanka in a Tri-Series final at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. Both teams finished ahead of South Africa, and Harmanpreet Kaur's team head into this contest as slight favourites given their consistency. Can they seal a win, or will Sri Lanka pack another surprise punch after their Asia Cup final victory in the same fixture in 2024?
England are set to host Zimbabwe in a bilateral encounter for the first time in 22 years, welcoming the Chevrons to Trent Bridge in Nottingham for a solitary Test to begin their international summer. For Indian fans, this will be a match that will provide an idea about the form England take into the five-match Test series next month, as well as a look at upcoming players that might feature over the course of that series. Do Zimbabwe have enough juice for a historic upset?
No double header Sunday in the IPL, but that only means your Sunday evening prime time is freed up to watch arguably the biggest football match of the season so far. Four points separate Barcelona at the top of the table from Real Madrid in second place, and with just four matches to go in La Liga, this is the game that could either all but decide the title race, or make it a tense race to the finish line. A can't-miss encounter.
While they have had disappointing domestic seasons thus far, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspurs both have the opportunity to crown the year with a trophy in the Europa League — and in going so, book a spot in the Champions League for next campaign. A lot on the line in this match set to be played in Bilbao, between two historic English teams.
Elsewhere, the clay court season in tennis sees the Italian Open in Rome, with the best men's and women's tennis players competing in their respective 1000-level events. The return of world number one and home favourite Jannik Sinner from his doping suspension the headliner, before Roland Garros begins towards the end of this month.
Also in Italy, the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix will see Formula One action begin in the European stretch for the summer, a crucial period in which the Drivers' Championship will begin to take shape.
Lastly, playoff action heats up in the NBA, with the Conference Semifinals rounds seeing some mouth-watering contests, being broadcast on Youtube in India every morning for a sporting start to the day.

Need to develop different approach for crowd management: Tharoor on Bengaluru stampede

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has termed the stampede in Bengaluru near the Chinnaswamy Cricket Stadium that claimed 11 lives as 'tragic' and said 'we will have to develop different approaches to control and management'. The comments by Mr. Tharoor, currently in the U.S. leading a multi-party delegation on Operation Sindoor, came during an interview with PTI Videos in Washington on Wednesday (June 4, 2025). Asked what would be his advice to his party colleagues who run the government in Karnataka, the State in which stampede took place, Mr. Tharoor said, 'Somehow or the other, we will have to develop different approaches to control and management. The government there will do what is necessary.' 'It [the stampede] is absolutely tragic. My heart goes out to those who lost their lives,' he said. At least 11 people died while several others were injured in the stampede in Bengaluru during the celebrations of Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) victory in the IPL on Wednesday (June 4, 2025). 'The saddest thing about our excitement and buzz of our population is that we are not good at crowd control. We will learn lessons from it but what a shame that it happened,' he said. In Bengaluru, State Home Minister G. Parameshwara said on Thursday (June 5, 2025) that Karnataka Government will formulate a new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for mega events, meetings and celebrations aimed at preventing any untoward incidents.

England squad announced for 1st Test vs India: Jamie Overton earns surprise recall, wait for Jofra Archer continues

Jamie Overton has received a surprise call-up as England on Thursday announced their 14-man squad for the first Test against India. The 31-year-old played the only Test of his career in June 2022 and now returns to replace the injured Gus Atkinson. Meanwhile, Jacob Bethell, Chris Woakes and Brydon Carse are all back in the squad after missing England's one-off Test against Zimbabwe last month. Fast bowlers Mark Wood and Jofra Archer are the notable names missing from the squad which will be led by Ben Stokes. Archer was expected to return to Test cricket for the first time in since February 2021 in this series but a thumb injury that he sustained while playing for Rajasthan Royals in the 2025 season of the Indian Premier League has put doubts on that. Archer was supposed to play in England's recently concluded ODI series against the West Indies and potentially return to red-ball action in the second of England Lions' unofficial Tests against India A. He ended up having to sit out both matches. Wood, meanwhile, could return for the final Test of the series if he has a seamless recovering from a surgery on his left knee that was done in March. Bethell had missed the Zimbabwe Test due to his commitments in the IPL. His return poses a potential selection headache for England at the top of the order. While his three half-centuries at No.3 in his debut series in New Zealand put Zak Crawley and Ollie Pope's under doubt, both went on to score tons against Zimbabwe. India's five-Test tour of England starts on June 20 at Headingley after which the second match will be played at Edgbaston from July 2. Lord's will host the third Test from July 10 after which the fourth Test will be played at Old Trafford from July 23. It is a quick turnover after that with the fifth Test scheduled to be played at the Oval from July 31. England squad for first Test vs India: Shoaib Bashir, Jacob Bethell, Harry Brook, Brydon Carse, Sam Cook, Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Jamie Overton, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Jamie Smith (wk), Ben Stokes (capt), Josh Tongue, Chris Woakes.
