Two get life imprisonment for killing man in 2017
Thane, A Thane court has sentenced two persons to life imprisonment in a case of murder of a grocer and bid to kill his wife after trespassing into their shop in 2017.
Special Judge Amit M Shete, in the order on May 26, acquitted the two accused of charges under the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act, but convicted them under the Indian Penal Code sections 302 , 307 , 460 and 34 .
A copy of the order was made available on Thursday.
According to the prosecution, the two accused Ramashish alias Ashish Rajendra Patel and Sagar Dnyaneshwar Katale entered Suresh Gupta's grocery shop in Bhiwandi town here on the night of January 26, 2017 while he and his wife Sunita Gupta were sleeping.
The woman testified that her husband confronted the intruders and she raised an alarm. At that point, one of the assailants stabbed her husband in the stomach. He then stabbed her also in her abdomen and both the assailants then fled.
The man was taken to the IGM Hospital, Bhiwandi, where he was declared dead on arrival while his wife received treatment for her injuries.
During the investigation, the MCOCA provisions were invoked due to the accused's alleged previous criminal records.
But judge Shete observed there was no material brought on record from which it could be said that the accused persons indulged in an organised crime syndicate.
At the most, from the available record, it can be said the accused rather indulged in committing offences like theft and robbery, the court said.
Judge Shete further said "the evidence, so brought on record by the prosecution, stands firmed and compels to hold the accused guilty of the offence of lurking house-trespass by night, committing murder, attempt to commit murder of the informant with the common intention."
The court also imposed a collective fine of ₹80,000 on the accused and directed that ₹70,000 from it be paid to the informant and/or the heirs of the deceased.

Pune police kill wanted criminal Hatti in encounter in Solapur
Pune police Sunday gunned down a 'notorious criminal on record' during an armed encounter in the Solapur district. The man, identified as Rahim Shaikh, who also went by the aliases Shahrukh and Hatti, had been on the run for five months. According to a senior police official, a team from the Pune Crime Branch located Hatti in Lamboti village in Mohol, Solapur district. The team, assisted by officers from the Mohol police station, intercepted him around 5 am. As the police attempted to apprehend him, Hatti reportedly opened fire. Police returned fire, fatally wounding him at the scene. Hatti had been booked under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) and was wanted in connection with multiple serious offenses. Among the most recent was the armed robbery of a food delivery worker, which took place on May 14 in the Sayyad Nagar area of Pune's Hadapsar neighbourhood. The delivery worker, Umar Shakeel Shaikh, 21, reported that he had been held at knifepoint by two men. Police later identified the suspects as Hatti and Noman Sayyad, 20, another known offender. Sayyad was arrested soon after the robbery, while Hatti remained at large. Shaikh, a resident of Mohammadwadi, filed a First Information Report at the Kalepadal police station, which launched the investigation. According to authorities, Hatti and Sayyad were also involved in a separate incident on March 12, in which a senior citizen was assaulted in Sayyad Nagar.

NIA chargesheets 17 in 2024 Maoist attack on Chhattisgarh CRPF camp
Recruiting youth to 'wage a war against the state', organising 'dummy training camps' and 'conspiracy meetings', and keeping 'prohibited arms and ammunition and explosive materials' – these are the allegations against 17 people charged with the 2024 Maoist attack on three Central Reserve Police Force campus in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur. In its chargesheet, filed before a special court in Jagdalpur, Chhattisgarh, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) Friday named 17 people for the attack, of whom 16 are absconding. The single accused in custody is Sodi Baman @ Deval. The case relates to the attack on the Central Reserve Police Force's (CRPF) new camp at Dharmavaram and two adjacent CRPF/CoBRA (Commando Battalion for Resolute Action) camps located along the northern bank of the Chintavagu River and Pamed, the southernmost village of Bijapur, on January 16, 2024. Traditionally part of south Bastar, this was for a decade considered the stronghold of Battalion No. 01 of the People's Liberation Guerilla Army (PLGA), the armed wing of Communist Party of India (Maoist). The absconding accused include two Central Committee Members (CCM), two Special Zonal/ State Committee Members (SZC/SCM) and other top cadres of Battalion 1, Telangana State Committee and Pamed Area Committee. These accused also recruited youngsters to wage war against India, the NIA said. The chargesheet filed Friday before an NIA special court in Jagdalpur, Chhattisgarh, was under various sections of Indian Penal Code, Arms Act, Explosive Substances Act, and Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, an official statement from the NIA said. Armed with barrel grenade launchers (BGLs) and automatic weapons, the assailants — a group of 250-300 members of the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist) — attempted to loot weapons and other belongings of the security forces from the camps, the NIA, which took over investigation into the case in February 2024, said, adding that 12 security personnel were injured in the attack. The NIA registered a case against 21 named and 250-300 unknown armed cadres of proscribed terrorist organisation CPI (Maoist). Investigations revealed that the chargesheeted accused had been involved in the recruitment of youth, as part of a criminal conspiracy to wage war against the democratically-elected government of India, the statement went on to say. 'They were in possession of prohibited arms, ammunition and explosive materials, and had organised and attended conspiracy meetings. They also established a dummy training camp as a replica of the target camps, imparted training and gave motivational speeches to their armed cadres to carry out an armed rebellion, besides conducting recce of the said camps and executing the final attacks,' the statement said. Asked about the significance of the CRPF camps, Inspector General for Bastar Range Sundarraj P told The Indian Express: 'The remarkable achievement of the camps was (that it was) facilitating the successful implementation of Chintavagu river bridge project, which had long remained a distant dream for local population. The civil transportation has begun in the area connecting Pamed to the district headquarters of Bijapur. Over time, more than 90 security personnel have attained martyrdom in the Pamed Basaguda-Awapalli-Usor axis due to various ambushes/IED blast incidents'.
