5,000 personnel, drones: Delhi Police beefs up security for Kanwar Yatra
According to the police, traffic diversions have been put in place and additional checking has been initiated on major routes from where kanwariyas are expected to pass.
"The pilgrimage will continue till July 22 and culminate on Shivratri. We are in coordination with paramilitary forces and home guards who will be monitoring sensitive areas through CCTV surveillance and drone patrolling," said the police officer.
Special security measures have also been planned for temple areas and designated kanwar camps where pilgrims will rest and perform rituals, he added.
According to the officer, 774 locations have been identified across the city for setting up camps, and 374 kanwar camps have already been permitted. Sources in the police said that more than 150 additional camps are awaiting final approval.
"The primary focus will remain on maintaining law and order, facilitating smooth traffic movement and providing immediate assistance to the pilgrims. PCR vans, quick reaction teams (QRT) and ambulances have been strategically stationed," another police officer said.
Key routes such as NH-1, NH-9, and major arterial roads passing through outer, northeast, east and Shahdara districts are being closely monitored. Pilgrims carrying kanwar (decorated pots of Ganga water) on foot and in vehicles will be allowed entry via designated points.
"To manage the influx, Delhi Police has released a list of entry routes for kanwariyas which includes Ghazipur border, Anand Vihar, Bhopura, Apsara, Maharajpur, Loni border and ISBT Kashmere Gate. Specific roads like Wazirabad to Bhopura, GT Road and Loni Road will also serve as major kanwar routes," the officer added.
Authorities have also appealed to citizens to avoid unnecessary travel through the routes notified for kanwariya movement. Emergency services and essential vehicles will be facilitated and special helplines have been activated.
The officer said that senior officers of Delhi Police have directed DCPs of all 15 districts to remain present on the ground and ensure coordination with civil administration, especially for handling emergencies and regulating crowd movement.
Separate teams have been tasked to address any threat perception and maintain vigil against suspicious activities during the week-long religious gathering. All SHOs have been asked to stay in touch with local camp organisers to ensure that safety norms and guidelines are being followed.
Meanwhile, the Delhi government's Disaster Management Authority has kept response teams ready with water tankers, fire services, medical aid and disaster response equipment.
The Kanwar Yatra witnesses lakhs of devotees every year, who travel mostly on foot from Haridwar to their local Shiva temples, carrying holy water from the Ganga to offer on Shivlingas.
With rains already lashing parts of Delhi and NCR, officials said extra caution is being maintained to prevent accidents and ensure smooth passage for the pilgrims.

Punjab guv meets many union ministers to discuss critical developmental issues
Chandigarh, Jul 18 (PTI) Punjab Governor and Chandigarh Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria met several Union ministers in New Delhi since Thursday to discuss key development issues concerning the Union Territory and the state, an official statement said. On Friday, Kataria met Union Ministers Manohar Lal Khattar (Housing and Urban Affairs), Ashwini Vaishnaw (Railways), Gajendra Singh Shekhawat (Tourism) and Bhupender Yadav (Environment, Forest and Climate Change). DTTDC invites bids for horticulture work at three heritage sites in Delhi
New Delhi, Jul 18 (PTI) The Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation (DTTDC) has invited online bids for the development of horticulture and landscaping work at Bhuli Bhatiyari Ka Mahal, Bijri Khan Tomb and Maqbara-e-Paik sites in the national capital, along with a one-year maintenance period with an estimated cost of Rs 47.15 lakh. According to the tender notice issued by DTTDC on Thursday, the scope of work includes development of horticulture work, including landscaping with one-year maintenance at Bhuli Bhatiyari ka Mahal in the Central Ridge Reserve Forest in Karol Bagh, Bijri Khan Tomb in RK Puram and Maqbara-e-Paik in Mukarba Park along NH-1 Bypass. The estimated cost for the entire project is Rs 47.15 lakh, with an earnest deposit of Rs 94,316. The completion period is specified as 30 days for initial development, followed by one year of maintenance, the tender stated. The deadline for submitting the bid is 3 pm on July 25 and the earnest money in original form must be submitted by the same deadline, while the lowest bidder will be required to submit additional documents within seven working days after the bid opening, it mentioned. Tenderers have been advised to inspect the site and make themselves familiar with the nature of the work, site conditions, and access points. They will be responsible for arranging their own materials, tools, and facilities unless otherwise stated in the tender documents, it read. Bhuli Bhatiyari ka Mahal, located in the Central Ridge near Karol Bagh, is a 14th century hunting lodge believed to be built during the Tughlaq dynasty. The monument, now part of Delhi's protected ridge forest, is often associated with local folklore and is largely abandoned now. Bijri Khan's Tomb in RK Puram is an example of Mughal-era architecture, though lesser known, and stands amidst a busy urban landscape, often requiring upkeep to preserve its historic integrity. Maqbara-e-Paik, near Mukarba Chowk, is another under-recognised heritage structure believed to have been constructed during the late Mughal period, surrounded by modern infrastructure development and in need of aesthetic revival. ITC Hotels plans to expand portfolio to over 220 units by 2030
Agency: PTI Kolkata, Jul 18 (PTI) ITC Hotels Ltd is aiming at expanding its portfolio to over 220 operating units with more than 20,000 keys by 2030, its latest annual report said. According to the annual report for 2024-25, the company plans to accelerate its growth through management contracts and franchise arrangements. Approximately, 70 per cent of the keys are being operated under management contracts, including franchising, it said. Spun into a separate entity after the demerger from ITC Limited, the company owns brands like ITC Hotels, Mementos, WelcomHotel, Storii, Fortune and WelcomHeritage. 'Having achieved considerable scale and market standing, the business pivoted into an asset right strategy to drive growth and reduce the capital intensity of operations," the company said. The focus was also on strong partnerships with asset owners, leveraging brand credentials and providing operational expertise, ITC Hotels said in the report. In the last two years, 30 hotels have been launched under the ITC Hotels brand portfolio, out of which 29 are managed and franchised properties in India and Nepal. The company has a robust pipeline of hotels with a high prominence of brownfield assets, which are likely to open in the next four years. Presently, the company is amongst the 'fastest growing" hospitality chains in the country with more than 140 properties and over 13,300 rooms under its six brands, the report said. In 2024-25, the Indian hospitality industry sustained its strong growth momentum, which was driven by economic stability and robust domestic demand outpacing supply, aided by the government's thrust on improving infrastructure and connectivity in the country. With over two lakh keys across the country covering various segments, India still remains significantly underpenetrated in comparison to the global hospitality industry, the report said.
