Paul Skenes bobblehead draws 'unprecedented' demand in Pittsburgh

Fox Sports19-04-2025

Any time there's a bobblehead giveaway in Major League Baseball, you have to arrive early to secure yours. For Pittsburgh Pirates fans on Saturday, that meant hours if you wanted to get your hands on a Paul Skenes bobblehead.
Fans began lining up outside PNC Park more than five hours before Saturday's game between Pittsburgh and Cleveland in hopes of landing a bobblehead featuring the reigning National League Rookie of the Year.
The gates didn't open until 90 minutes before the first pitch, but that didn't deter fans. Lines stretched out in all directions from the park early Saturday afternoon, including one that snaked over the Roberto Clemente Bridge behind center field, which links Pittsburgh's North Shore to the city's downtown.
Demand grew so great that the club — which has endured its share of public-relations issues during the season's opening weeks — pledged to make sure everyone in the expected sellout crowd who did not receive one will have an opportunity to obtain one.
"Any fan who scanned into today's game after the first 20,000 bobbleheads were given away will be sent an electronic voucher," the Pirates announced. Team president Travis Williams called interest in the bobblehead "unprecedented."
The promotion also happened to align with Skenes' fourth start of the season. The top pick in the 2023 amateur draft entered Saturday 2-1 with a 2.96 ERA, an MLB-best 1.39 FIP, 0.74 WHIP and 26 strikeouts in 24 1/3 innings. However, the Pirates are 8-13, last in the National League Central.
Skenes, the starting pitcher for the National League in the 2024 MLB All-Star Game, posted a 1.96 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 170 strikeouts in 23 starts last season.
This is hardly the first time an item featuring Skenes has drawn monumental attention. A one-of-a-kind rookie card featuring Skenes sold for more than $1 million at auction last month after accumulating 64 bids, making it the highest-selling Rookie Debut Patch card of all time.

Dodgers' Clayton Kershaw takes issue with Cardinals' pregame antics before start

Los Angeles Dodgers star Clayton Kershaw hurled a gem against the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday as the team picked up a 7-3 victory. The veteran pitcher went five innings, allowing one run on six hits and striking out seven. He only threw 82 pitches and picked up the first winning decision of the year. Kershaw expressed after the game he was a bit upset with the Cardinals going into the matchup. The Cardinals played Matt Adams' clutch home run off Kershaw in the 2014 National League Division Series on a loop before the game began at Busch Stadium. It wasn't Kershaw's finest moment for the Dodgers but the team playing the moment from more than 10 years ago appeared to irk the pitcher. "I think it's a little bush league, but I don't expect anything less from these guys. So, it's no worries," he told Kershaw was the National League MVP and Cy Young Award winner during the 2014 season. More than 10 years later, he's still going strong for the Dodgers though the expectations are a bit different. He's started five games this season for the Dodgers and has a 4.35 ERA with 15 strikeouts. He was last an All-Star in 2023. He missed most of the 2024 season with various injuries. Los Angeles improved to 39-27 with the win over St. Louis. The defending World Series champions a game ahead of the San Diego Padres and San Francisco Giants in the National League West division. Oklahoma Sooners earn commitment from 2026 blue chip offensive lineman

Oklahoma Sooners earn commitment from 2026 blue chip offensive lineman The Oklahoma Sooners added their ninth pledge in the 2026 recruiting class on Monday, picking up a commitment from four-star offensive lineman Noah Best. Best is the No. 15 interior offensive lineman in the class according to Rivals and is also a four-star prospect in the 247Sports Composite and On3 Industry ranking. Best marks the second offensive line commitment in the class, joining Will Conroy, another interior offensive line prospect in 2026. Best chose the Sooners over offers from Missouri and Kansas State and had a total of 24 Power Four offers across the SEC, Big Ten, ACC, and Big 12. It's a big win for Bill Bedenbaugh and the Oklahoma Sooners, who add another physical interior offensive lineman of the future. Best is a force at the point of attack and imposes his will on defenders. He moves really well in space, displaying the athleticism to pull across the formation and climb to the second level in the run game. As a pass protector, Best displays really good footwork. He doesn't allow defenders to beat him around the edge. He's a strong player. Once he gets his hands on the rusher, they don't go anywhere. Although he projects as a guard at the collegiate level, his experience and the talent he has shown at offensive tackle will provide Best the position flexibility to make an impact at multiple spots along the offensive line. Darius Garland to miss 4-5 months after toe surgery

After appearing in a career-high 75 regular-season games, Cleveland Cavaliers point guard Darius Garland is not guaranteed to be available for the start of the 2025-26 campaign. Monday afternoon, the Cavaliers announced that the team's starting point guard will be out for 4-5 months after undergoing surgery on his left great toe. While the expectation is that Garland will be good to go by the start of training camp, that does not precisely align with the timeline provided by the team. Having averaged at least 20.6 points per game in three of the last four seasons, Garland earned his second All-Star Game appearance and helped lead the Cavaliers to 64 wins and the top seed in the Eastern Conference. In addition to the 20.6 points, he averaged 2.9 rebounds, 6.7 assists, 1.2 steals and 2.8 three-pointers in 30.7 minutes. Advertisement In his first season playing for Kenny Atkinson, Garland's efficiency improved. At the same time, his playing time decreased slightly, with the first-year head coach being willing to go deep into his bench throughout the regular season. Garland shot 47.2 percent from the field, 40.1 percent from three and 87.8 percent from the foul line while averaging 2.5 turnovers per game, his lowest average since his rookie season (2019-20). Unfortunately for Garland and the Cavaliers, a left great toe injury sidelined him for four games, including the first two games of the team's second-round series against the Pacers. Cleveland would lose both of those games, falling into a hole that proved too deep to crawl out of. And in the aftermath of the second-round elimination, Garland and center Jarrett Allen have been mentioned in some trade rumors. On a potential connection with Orlando, NBA insider Jake Fischer reported on June 8 that there have been no 'substantive conversations' between the two franchises regarding a deal involving Garland. One would assume that uncertainty regarding Garland's health would take any potential deals off the table if Cleveland were interested in breaking up its "core four." Also, Garland's surgery may impact the front office's approach to Ty Jerome, who will be an unrestricted free agent next month. Coming off the best season of his NBA career, Jerome may be in line for a significant payday. However, his importance to the Cavaliers cannot be understated, especially if Garland is not guaranteed to be healthy when training camp begins.
