Malay Mail17-05-2025
BANDAR PERMAISURI, May 17 — A male student of Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA) was found drowned after being swept away by strong currents while bathing in the Hutan Lipur Lata Payung picnic area here yesterday.
The body of Abed Mifzal Azman, 22, from Johor, was found at 9.30 pm by a search and rescue team with the help of villagers, about one kilometre from where he was reported missing.
Setiu District Police Chief Supt Mohd Zain Md Deris said the body had been sent to the Setiu Hospital Forensic Unit for a post-mortem.
He said in the incident yesterday evening, Abed Mifzal, a first-year Bachelor of Business Administration (Islamic Finance) student, was said to be having a picnic with six friends when a water surge occurred.
'The victim's six friends managed to escape, but the victim was swept away by the strong current,' he said.
Meanwhile, Mohd Zain advised the public not to do any activities in the river or at recreational forest areas in Setiu for now, due to the uncertain weather conditions and risks of the water surge phenomenon. — Bernama

AGC stands by bullying charges in Zara Qairina case, rebuffs lawyer's call for harsher law

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 19 — The Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) said it will charge suspects in the Zara Qairina bullying case under Section 507C(1) of the Penal Code as the provision covers bullying alone and is not linked to her death. The AGC said the decision followed a review of investigation papers and was based on evidence gathered by the authorities. It said a statement earlier today by the lawyer appointed by Zara's mother, Noraida Lamat, was speculative and not supported by accurate facts. Lawyer Hamid Ismail argued that Section 507D(2) of the Penal Code, which pertains to 'causing a person to believe that harm will be caused', was more appropriate. The AGC reiterated that its charging decision reflects the available evidence and investigative findings. It added that an inquest must still proceed to determine the actual cause of Zara Qairina's death. The Zara Qairina controversy centres on the tragic death of the 13-year-old student at a religious boarding school in Sabah, who was found unconscious after reportedly falling from her dormitory's third floor on July 16 and dying the next day. Investigations uncovered clear elements of bullying, neglect, and sexual harassment, with her personal diary and statements from nearly 200 witnesses revealing her struggles and complaints to the school. The case sparked national outrage, allegations of cover-ups, and calls for justice, leading to an expanded police probe, the exhumation of her body for forensic investigation, and the scheduled inquest proceedings starting in September 2025.

Bersatu's Hilman Idham to face charge over video remarks on political arrests

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 19 — Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia Youth chief Muhammad Hilman Idham is set to face prosecution tomorrow over remarks made at a protest last month. According to the Royal Malaysia Police's Classified Crimes Unit, the Gombak Setia assemblyman will be charged under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code for making statements deemed likely to cause public alarm. The charge is believed to be over a video of him speaking at a July 29 protest here, in which he allegedly claimed the arrest of some Bersatu members was politically motivated. The offence is punishable by up to two years' imprisonment, a fine, or both upon conviction. Bersatu responded to the news by condemning the plan to prosecute Hilman and alleging it to be political intimidation.

Police remands 51-year-old man over TikTok video claiming Zara Qairina's death was murder

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 19 — Police have remanded a 51-year-old man from August 19 to 21 for allegedly spreading false information on TikTok about the death of student Zara Qairina. The suspect, believed to be behind the account @berjuanguntukzara, was arrested on Monday night. Police also seized a mobile phone said to have been used in the case. The video in question, titled 'Revealing Zara's post-mortem findings', went viral on August 15 and contained an audio recording that described her death as a planned murder. Police said the two-minute clip misrepresented the facts of the ongoing investigation. Police said the case is being investigated under the Sedition Act 1948, Section 505(b) of the Penal Code for statements likely to cause public alarm, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for misuse of network services. The Attorney General's Chambers has already decided that an inquest will be held into Zara's death, police added. Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk M. Kumar urged the public not to spread rumours or manipulate facts that could cause fear, disrupt court proceedings or jeopardise investigations. 'Firm action will be taken against anyone found deliberately spreading false information,' he said. Police also reminded the public to verify the accuracy of information found on social media, especially on issues concerning security, harmony and national unity.
