Delhi Police special cell reports lapses at 16 locations ahead of I-Day

NEW DELHI: In the lead-up to Independence Day, the Delhi Police has intensified security measures across the national capital, uncovering significant lapses at over 100 key locations during a sweeping inspection drive.
Conducted by the Special Cell over five days, the checks focused on high-footfall areas such as hotels, railway stations, bus terminals, and metro hubs, aimed at evaluating the capital's preparedness against potential terror threats. Sources revealed that the findings raise serious concerns about the functionality of security infrastructure, personnel deployment, and overall vigilance across several districts.
The Special Cell in Northeast Delhi reported lapses at 16 locations, followed by 13 in East, 12 each in Shahdara and North, 11 in Central, 10 in Southeast, nine in South, eight in Metro, seven in Rohini, and six in Dwarka, sources said.
'Multiple teams of the Special Cell undertook a five-day security inspection drive across various parts of Delhi in view of the high alert surrounding the upcoming national event,' said a source.
During the inspection, teams flagged non-functional CCTV cameras in hotels, parking areas, locations near metro stations, eateries within metro premises, and several areas near railway stations and bus stands. 'The teams also inspected non-functional door frame metal detectors (DFMDs), gaps in security personnel deployment, and improper maintenance of visitor records,' a source added.
Another officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the Special Cell will write to the DCPs of the concerned districts to improve security in their respective areas.
The inspection, carried out discreetly by trained teams, was aimed at assessing the city's readiness to respond to any terror threats. It specifically targeted public spaces known to attract large crowds.
'Teams noticed a lack of functional DFMDs at various entry points. At several public places, metal detectors were either switched off, lacked power supply, or were simply not in working condition,' the officer said.

Non-lowering of national flag after sunset in itself is not an offence, says Kerala HC

The mere act of not lowering the national flag after the sunset in itself is not an offence, unless there is a deliberate action with the intention of insulting the national honour or showing disrespect to the flag, the Kerala High Court has stated. It went on to quash criminal proceedings initiated against the Secretary of the Angamaly municipality by the police and the trial court for allegedly not lowering the flag at the municipal office for almost two days after the Independence Day celebration in 2015. He had been charged under the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971 and the Flag Code of India, 2002 after the Angamaly police initiated suo motu action. A Bench of Justice Kauser Edappagath said that a mere lapse or inaction by a person in not lowering the national flag after sunset cannot be said to be an act of gross affront or indignity, or insult to the flag. The provisions of the Act of 1971 cannot be attracted unless there is a deliberate action with an intention to insult the national honour or show disrespect to the flag. The Municipal Secretary contended that the allegations against him, even if taken at their face value and accepted in their entirety, do not prima facie constitute any offence or make out a case against him.

Five alleged Bangladeshi nationals living illegally in Delhi detained near Red Fort

NEW DELHI: Five alleged Bangladeshi nationals, who had been living in the national capital illegally, were apprehended near Red Fort, police said on Tuesday. According to the police, they had come to visit the historic monument on Monday and were trying to enter the premises, unaware that it has remained closed to the public since July 15 due to heightened security ahead of Independence Day. The five men - aged between 20-25 years - were intercepted by security personnel deployed near the Red Fort, they said. "They were stopped during routine checking as they did not possess valid entry passes. During questioning, it was found that all five were Bangladeshi nationals who had entered India illegally around three to four months ago," an officer said. They told police that they were working as daily wage labourers in different parts of Delhi, he said. While they were found in possession of Bangladeshi documents, no suspicious items or activities were discovered during the interrogation, the police said. Deportation proceedings have been initiated, they said, adding that further investigation is in progress.
