With the right care you can enjoy your sunflowers at home for over a week, as these fresh-cut blooms typically last between five to twelve days in a vase.
But it all depends on how recently they were cut and the way they're maintained once indoors.
Shelley Davis, flower expert at Flying Flowers, has provided her expert tips for keeping your sunflower bouquets looking their best, whether you're cutting them from your garden, picking them up in-store, or receiving flowers by post.
Preparation is key
Before transferring your sunflowers into a vase, Shelley suggests: 'Sunflowers typically need more water than any other flowering plant, so keeping them hydrated is essential.
"Make sure to trim stems at an angle to increase the surface area for water to absorb, and if possible, always cut stems under water to prevent air bubbles from entering the plant, which can lead to early wilting and reduced vase life.
"This underwater trick is easier with sunflower bouquets than others, as they're usually displayed in smaller bunches making the process more manageable.
'Removing leaves from your sunflowers will further extend vase life, as leaves take energy away from the flower. By removing leaves, your sunflowers put all their energy into their blossoming heads.'
Feed your flowers well
'Never forget to add flower food to your vase water", Shelley continues.
"It provides essential nutrients to encourage the petals to open fully and prevents any nasty bacteria forming.
'If you don't have flower food to hand, you can make some at home. Just add one teaspoon of sugar, one teaspoon of bleach and two teaspoons of lemon juice to a quarter cup of warm water.
Alan Titchmarsh's top 7 plants that 'transform ugly fences with gorgeous flowers & fragrance' & they grow for years
"Adding this is to your vase will have a similar effect, as the citric acid helps the flowers absorb water, the bleach prevents bacteria growth, and the sugar provides nourishment'
Keep them away from fruit
Next up, the flower expert revealed that placement is key when it comes to keeping sunflowers fresh for longer.
She says: 'Keep your sunflowers away from ripening fruit, as it gives off ethylene gas that speeds up the aging process, causing sunflowers to wilt and decay faster.
"Apples, bananas, pears and tomatoes emit high levels of this gas, so it's best to store them far apart."
Avoid direct light and heat
'You should also keep sunflowers out of direct light and heat", Shelley suggests.
"Without roots, cut sunflowers can't photosynthesise properly, so they burn energy quicker. Heat also speeds up water loss, causing them to droop and wilt further.
'Find somewhere cool and well ventilated with diffused light for your sunflowers to thrive, but also somewhere where you will still be able to see and enjoy them!'
Vase size matters
When choosing a vase for your sunflowers, Shelley insists that "size matters".
She says: "Sunflowers have big beaming heads and the thickest stems of any cut flowers, which will benefit from a taller vase with a wide mouth to keep their height supported.
'If your vase doesn't provide enough support for heavy sunflower heads, consider using floral wire for extra stability.'

Boden's 'gorgeous' £250 coat perfect for autumn now £100

Boden shoppers have been raving about a trench coat that they say is perfect for autumn. The Windsor Heritage Mac was £250 but is now £100, offering a £150 save for fashion enthusiasts. The coat is available in petite and regular fits with UK sizes ranging from eight to 22 while sizes four and six are currently unavailable. The Windsor Heritage Mac comes in a rich hazelnut brown and a "jazzy" checked lining which makes this coat stand out. You could easily style it with a pair of denim jeans, a thin jumper, and your favourite tee underneath for a more completed look. From superstar gigs to cosy pubs, find out What's On in Wales by signing up to our newsletter here. However this coat could also be styled for more formal settings. Boden's description of the Windsor Heritage Mac reads: "Our Windsor heritage mac is just about as British as a cup of tea and queuing. We've taken the classic mac and modernised it with a boxier cut and raglan sleeves, then finished it with a jazzy checked lining that peeks out at the collar and cuffs too." The mac is made out of 100% cotton in the main section while the lining is crafted from 100% cotton. It also comes with functional pockets, as do most of Boden's clothing, but they are tacked closed to help the garment hold its shape. The tacking is designed to be removed. The Windsor Heritage Mac also comes with an oversized look – a loose fitting which means there is plenty of room to move. It is also designed to fall at mid-calf and has a button fastening at the front. While the coat is water-resistant Boden recommends that it is dry clean only. If you are looking for a similar looking coat that is ideal for the autumn but from an alternative retailer Next has the Trench Coat with Contrast Collar in khaki green colour for £85. Meanwhile the Faux Suede Belted Trench Coat in a tan colour from New Look has a cheaper price tag at £45. Back at Boden the Windsor Heritage Mac has received a rating of 4.5 out of five stars based on 29 reviews. "Oh my goodness, could this coat be any more perfect," one customer said. "Beautifully made and the fabric is a perfect weight for an Australian winter. The lining is just that hint of fun that Boden is so well known for. I did downsize this coat as our Winter weather here in Melbourne AU doesn't call for bulking up with a huge amount of layers and I'm glad I did. It will wear perfectly with a shirt and a thin jumper. I purchased a 14 and I normally wear a 16 but I'll still state the sizing is spot on. Extremely happy with this classic Mac." Another buyer reviewed: "I love love this mac coat. It's very high quality, the colour is fabulous and fit is true to size. I prefer a slightly oversized look, so will be exchanging for the next size up. Great value for the money. The checked inside lining is a great touch. Don't wait, get your size before it is gone." A third remarked: "Just what I have been looking for. Can't wait to wear in the autumn. Perfect sizing too". But not everyone was happy with their purchase. One reviewer commented: "Beautiful well made coat with a lovely cheerful check lining. Liked the colour and it fitted true to size. Unfortunately for me it was heavier than I expected, and it was quite a straight coat. I was looking for a lighter more flared shape, so sadly had to return it, but a very nice coat for the right person." However, most were happy with the coat. "Beautiful mac/raincoat," one said. "Excellent quality. Very stylish and wonderful colour with the check adding extra style. I can't wait to wear it. I am just short of 5ft (ordered petite) and it fit perfectly. They say you get what you pay for. Extremely, good value for money. Thank you."

In the clip, she said: "We've come from a literal council estate in Blackpool to this gorgeousness because we had just had enough and were like f**k it. "We wanted a better life for the kids." She showed viewers around the land she and her husband now lived on while in her pyjamas, admitting it was Kieran's hard work putting it all together. The family has decided to live off-grid at the farm, using a generator for power and solar panels. They also have installed a large water tank for their supplies. The farm is in working order and Carms and Kieran have sheep, pigs and dogs on the land. Despite going from a bustling city to the middle of nowhere, she revealed they couldn't be happier. Yes, we'll have sunny days here and there, but gone are those long balmy nights, the summer holiday anticipation, the joy of going outside in short-shorts and a vest top. But, before I finalise plans to hibernate 'til next spring, I've been trying to get hyped for autumn through the only way I know how: outfits. And you know what? It's worked. It's time to get excited for statement jackets, cosy cashmere and layering up without worry of getting too hot and bothered. Copenhagen Fashion Week ©Getty So, as we edge closer to autumn, the focus shifts from more trend-led items to pieces that promise longevity. Investing in key transitional clothes - like the perfect trench coat or a pair of stomper boots - ensures your wardrobe is ready for anything, whether that be an unpredictable British downpour or an outfit refresh. Whilst phrase 'capsule wardrobe' has become somewhat of a buzzword over the last couple of years, let it be your sartorial mantra, ensuring you're looking to those items already in your wardrobe you can bring out each season. Before we can fully defrost the winter wardrobe, there's that tricky little section of the year when it's not cold enough for 'The Big Coat' but too chilly to go sans sleeves. When you can just get away with sandals, but you'll need a woolly jumper on hand. Transitional dressing is a phrase you've probably heard before, but it basically refers to the art of dressing for the in-between seasons. It's about mastering the art of layering, and cleverly combining your summer favourites with autumnal essentials. Think jumpers over silk slip dresses, lightweight, tech-y anoraks and bare legs with boots. If, like me, you're also in need of some sartorial inspiration (seriously, my wardrobe is giving me nothing) I've been digging through my saved folder to find some outfits that perfectly nail the brief. Outfits that toe the line between hot and cold, seamlessly bridging the gap from summer to autumn. Let these looks be your transitional dressing blueprint. Take note... By now, you'll have seen plenty of lacy little slips worn over jeans. For the cooler weather, double up on denim with an oversized trucker jacket thrown over your lace camisoles. Keep the sizing suitably slouched to avoid 'jeans and a nice top' territory and accessories to a minimum, simple black flip flops should do the trick. Hollie Mercedes Peters at Copenhagen Fashion Week ©@getty Levi's, Trucker Jacket Medium Blue A classic for a reason. Size up your Levi's Trucker for a cool-girl oversized feel and don't be afraid to mix and match your washes for a 2025 take on double denim. Reformation, Cleodora Dress Black The hunt for the perfect lace trim slip dress can be long, try Reformation's gothic take (available in 3 shades) or look to pre-loved sites and search out those vintage hidden gems. Agolde, Low Curve Wide Leg Jeans Mid Blue Agolde's sell-out low curve jeans might just be the perfect pair, with a mid-rise waist and perfectly sized wide leg fit, these are jeans to suit everyone. Havaianas, Slim Square Flip-Flops Black You can't beat a pair of Havaianas, try the new slim soles with slightly squared toe for a chic take on the classics. Wear yours with dresses, trousers and skirts right up until the autumn chill arrives. As the temperatures dip, a trench coat is about to become your go-to layer. A timeless wardrobe staple, a trench perfectly blends practicality with sophistication, offering just the right amount of warmth for those crisp autumn days. Pair with your favourite summer dress and buckled ballet flats for an outfit that suits everything from strolls through the city to impromptu ice cream runs. When it comes to the humble trench coat, you won't need to worry too much as it basically goes with anything... win win! Miriam Akosua Nehring at Copenhagen Fashion Week ©Getty COS, Bubble Hem Midi Dress Cream Don't retire your summer dresses just yet, instead, switch sandals for ballet flats and boots and throw on a jacket for an autumn/winter ready outfit. Ganni, Buckle Strap Ballerinas Dark Olive Price: £115 Ballet flats are ideal in-between-the-seasons footwear, keeping your toes covered but still summery enough for sunny days. Instead of your usual ballerina styles, look to Ganni's slightly squared pair with buckle hardware for a sartorial upgrade. Nobody's Child, Check Trim Trench Coat Beige A staple trench coat will soon earn it's keep, upgrade from plain beige and consider a check print collar to add a little extra detail. This absolutely perfect transitional outfit centres around the classic striped long sleeve top and knee length jorts. Whilst on first inspection, shorts of any kind are strictly reserved for the summer months, there's not reason why these can't work for autumn. Take note from the street style set and pair yours with long sleeved stripes, kitten heels and plenty of accessories. Not only a perennial print, stripes effortlessly infuse a touch of Parisian chic into any look. Plus, when the temperatures start to dip but it's not quite cold enough to dig out your turtleneck, a long sleeve tee will come to the rescue on countless occasions. Amy Nathalie Portier at Copenhagen Fashion Week ©Getty Paloma Wool, Striped Polo-Neck Top In the way Parisian's are very well accustomed to, you're going to want to dig out your striped shirt - immediately. Look to Paloma Wool's polo neck collared offering for an everyday item you'll wear on repeat. Abercrombie & Fitch, Mid Rise Culotte Jeans Whilst technically described as culottes, these knee length denim shorts sit comfortably within the 'jorts' remit. Available in mid blue and off-white denim, these will seamlessly switch from summer to autumn by switching vest tops for long sleeves and knits. Mango, Pointed Kitten Heels Ecru All hail the kitten heel. Low enough to actually wear all day but still look polished and put together, a pair of pointed kitten heels - in go-with-everything black or white - will be your hero accessory for the season ahead. Whilst it doesn't seem cold enough to bring out your chunky jumpers just yet, it's in fact the perfect time to bring out fine knits. For the ultimate late summer early autumn combo, pair fine knit cashmere with ankle grazing or mid-calf length skirts for an outfit perfect for transitional season weather. The final flourish? A string of Carrie Brandshaw-esque pearls of course. Grece Ghanem at Copenhagen Fashion Week ©Getty Uniqlo, 100% Cashmere Crew Neck Jumper Pink Fashions best kept secret? Uniqlo's cashmere collection. This 100% cashmere, classic crew neck is not only under £80 (a rare find these days) but is also available in 24 different shades. YMC, Pink Draped Skirt Pastel shades are no longer reserved for summer only, instead bring sugary shades well into autumn. Toughen up pink ruffles with beaten up biker boots or pair with knitwear and heels for something a little more lady. Zara, Soft Finish Kitten Heel Sandals Heeled flip flops remain one of the shoes of 2025, so why not match yours to your outfit? Zara's soft pink version do just the trick. We're not saying to don your puffer jacket just yet, instead, look for outerwear that packs a punch. Polka dot coats, velvet jackets or even animal print dusters offer up ready-made outfits in 5 seconds flat, sounds ideal, right? Look for longline styles that hit below the knee that button up to the neck and pair with heeled mules on warmer days or knee high boots when temperatures drop. Sorted. Copenhagen Fashion Week ©Getty H&M, Leather Heeled Mules Consider black leather mules your new shoe-drobe staple working with everything from jeans and a t-shirt to tailored suits or mini dresses. Le Specs, Tinted Black Sunglasses Come rain or shine, oversized shades are a fashion pack essential. Try boho tinted D'frames for a cool-girl twist on your usual. When curating these pieces I wanted to focus on versatility, quality and a timeless appeal. In short, it made the list if one item was able to transition from day to night, from casual to polished and most importantly, from the warmer months to the slightly cooler ones. The goal was to create five looks you can wear individually, but can also be layered and mixed together.
