Sticky goo in 2,500-year-old bronze jars finally identified, settling 70-year debate
Globs of sticky goo discovered in the bottom of 2,500-year-old bronze jars from southern Italy have been chemically identified, settling a 70-year archaeological debate.
It's honey — the sweet leftovers of an offering to an ancient god.
A team of chemists and archaeologists used cutting-edge analysis techniques to test the paste-like residue. They concluded that the jars, which were found in the sixth-century-B.C. city of Paestum, originally contained honeycomb.
"What I find interesting is that the ancient Greeks did think that honey was a superfood," study lead author Luciana da Costa Carvalho, a chemist at the University of Oxford, said in a video. The researchers published their findings Wednesday (July 30) in the Journal of the American Chemical Society.
Honey and honeybees were important in ancient Greek and Roman medicine, rituals, cosmetics and food. So when archaeologists found eight bronze jars in an underground shrine in 1954, they assumed that the jars contained honey as a symbol of immortality. Despite at least four attempts over seven decades to confirm the presence of the sticky, sweet substance, no evidence of sugars was ever found.

But Carvalho and colleagues decided to take advantage of recent advances in chemical analysis techniques and to reopen the question of the gooey substance's origin.
Using mass spectrometry, a technique that can identify different molecules and compounds, Carvalho and colleagues identified intact hexose sugars in the ancient jar residue for the first time. Fresh honey is about 79% hexose sugars, the researchers wrote in the study, with fructose being the most abundant.
An analysis of the proteins in the ancient sample revealed the presence of royal jelly, a milky secretion made by worker bees. The researchers also recovered peptides — short amino acid chains that are smaller versions of proteins — unique to one species of honeybee: the European honeybee (Apis mellifera).
Adding up these analyses, the researchers wrote that the study presents the first direct molecular evidence supporting the presence of honey, likely offered as honeycombs.
"The amount of sugar in the ancient residue is very low compared to modern honey," Carvalho told Live Science in an email. "I think the residue tastes like washed honeycomb but slightly more acidic," Carvalho said, although she did not actually try it.
The researchers also identified copper ions in the honey mixture. Because these ions are biocidal, meaning they can kill microorganisms, "their presence would have contributed to the preservations of sugars on the surface of the residue," Carvalho said, potentially explaining how the honey lasted thousands of years.
The analysis of the goop can help archaeologists better understand ancient rituals and shrines. The jars were found in an underground shrine, also called a heroon, at Paestum. The heroon also included a large, wooden table with wool-wrapped iron rods placed on top.

The offering may have been made to Is of Helice, the mythical founder of the ancient Greek city of Sybaris, located in what today is the arch of Italy's boot. When Sybaris was destroyed in the sixth century B.C., its inhabitants fled and founded a city called Poseidonia. But when the Romans took it over in the third century B.C., they renamed the city Paestum.
The new study shows that "there is merit in reanalyzing museum collections because analytical techniques continue to develop," Carvalho said in the video.

Wreck of historic Spanish ship that was attacked in 1748 possibly found in North Carolina
Four shipwrecks – including the remains believed to be a 1748 Spanish privateer ship – were recently found at a historical site in North Carolina. A team of archeologists with East Carolina University's program in maritime studies was searching the Brunswick Town/Fort Anderson State Historic Site in Brunswick County, North Carolina, in May and June when they made the discoveries. In a statement, the university said the team collected wood samples that suggest the shipbuilders incorporated raw materials from Spanish Caribbean colonies in the 18th century. The team said that while more work is needed to confirm any identification of the remains, they believe they may be those of La Fortuna, a Spanish privateer from Cuba that exploded near the colonial wharves during an attack on the port at the end of King George's War in September 1748. "I came across several wooden frames barely sticking out of the clay mud with evidence of planking just barely visible on the surface," maritime studies graduate student Cory van Hees, who was part of the discovery, said in the press release. "I didn't understand what I was looking at in that moment, but I knew I should relay the wooden structure to faculty." He added, "Later that day, Dr. Jason Raupp was able to confirm this was a wreck, which may be La Fortuna. It was kind of overwhelming and a little emotional feeling once it set in." The ship was involved in an attack that took place during King George's War between 1744 and 1748 - several decades before the American Revolution. According to ECU, the wreck lies in proximity to where an 18th-century cannon thought to be from La Fortuna was recovered in 1985. More than 40 pieces of timber from what is thought to be La Fortuna were collected as part of an "emergency recovery" to save the ship's remains from advancing erosion and other threats, university officials said. "The shipwreck sites and colonial waterfront features previously covered beneath the protective marsh were found exposed and eroded in this area," officials said. "Although the site itself had broken apart, individual shipwreck timbers demonstrated a remarkable degree of preservation with some containing tool markings left by the historic shipwright." All the collected timber was transferred to the North Carolina Office of State Archaeology's Queen Anne's Revenge Conservation Laboratory at ECU's campus in Greenville for storage and eventual conservation treatment. "The successful recovery of the possible La Fortuna shipwreck and documentation of heritage at risk within a nationally significant historic site demonstrates the effectiveness of the collaborative efforts of the research team," said Dr. Jason Raupp, assistant professor in the Department of History and maritime studies, who led the team. The remains of three other shipwrecks were uncovered at the historic site's waterfront along the Cape Fear River. Preliminary analysis suggests that one was used for land reclamation at the waterfront, while another is a potential colonial flatboat, which was historically used to transport people and goods between the port and nearby plantations, the university said. The fourth was barely exposed and its remains are still unidentified. "Additional colonial port infrastructure and artifacts identified through the field schools include two timber-crib wharves, a causeway over the historic marsh, and numerous artifacts that shed light on colonial life, trade, maritime activity and military conflict at the historic site," the university said. "We are extremely excited about these important sites, as each one will help us to better understand the role of BTFA as one of the state's earliest colonial port towns," Raupp said in a statement. "These submerged colonial waterfront features are incredibly well-preserved and present an excellent opportunity for ECU students to engage in hands-on, collaborative research."

Venus and Jupiter will dramatically pass each other in the night sky on the same day that the annual Perseid meteor shower peaks. The conjunction between the two brightest planets will take place in the east in the pre-dawn sky, with the Perseids due to peak overnight on Aug. 12/13. The artefacts—discovered under a corn field on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi—suggest that ancient humans may have inhabited the region 800,000 years earlier than previously known. But, according to the study's co-author Professor Adam Brumm, how these ancient humans even got to Sulawesi remains a mystery. Professor Brumm told Yahoo News Australia, 'I think it's more likely that [they got there by] some freak geological event, involving hominoids being washed out to sea by a tsunami from mainland Asia, and clinging to floating trees. 'Other species, including rats, monkeys, and even early elephants, have also conquered new islands by sea.' While the stone tools themselves couldn't be directly dated, researchers were able to calculate that the age of the sediments and pig fossil that surrounded the tools were between 1.04 and 1.48 million years old.
