KMDA takes up repair of battered surfaces of more city bridges

1 2 3 4 Kolkata: A couple of days after TOI carried a report on the sorry state of some of the carriageway surfaces on the city's bridges and flyovers, Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA), the custodian of most of the elevated corridors in the city, decided to take up repair work of the damaged stretches. In fact, KMDA officials on Wednesday said the repair drive was already underway and the state govt agency has completed repairs on some of the bridges and flyovers. Officials said both patchwork and thorough repairs are conducted as per requirement. "Repair work of the carriageway stretches of bridges and flyovers is going on. Thorough repairs are being done where it is required, and patchwork is being done to fix potholes which developed in some places. Work will continue till puja. All flyovers and bridges will be covered one after another," a KMDA official said. A TOI report on Monday highlighted the sorry state of Bridge No. 4, Dhakuria Bridge, and Taratala flyover. A PWD official said stretches of Taratala flyover will be repaired soon. The authorities are conducting inspections on a regular basis to keep a check on which carriageway stretches have been damaged and need repairs. On Monday, the authorities repaired the damaged carriageway stretch of Maa Saradamoni Setu (Zeerat bridge) near Alipore zoo with micro concrete. KMDA recently conducted repair work on the damaged carriageway surface of the old Durgapur Bridge — connecting Ultadanga with VIP Road — with bituminous concrete. The carriageway of Chetla RCC Bridge was recently repaired with a mastic layer to make it durable. Different sections of Garden Reach flyover have been repaired with full mastic. "There were a few stretches where the surface developed wear and tear, which have been patched up," said an official. Work is also on to repair the carriageway of the slip bridge which connects Salt Lake to VIP Road. "While KMC is conducting road repairs across the city, KMDA is entrusted to repair carriageways of bridges and flyovers maintained by them," said a state urban development department official. According to a KMC roads department official, though KMDA was entrusted to conduct repair of road surfaces of most of the bridges and elevated corridors, the civic body coordinates with the state agency in effective and prompt repair work. "At times, we are approached by the state agency to supply hot-mix materials to fix potholes on bridges and flyovers after rain. We never hesitate to supply adequate repair material," the official said. KMC sources said if the department was approached it would even conduct a repair of the bridges under KMDA's jurisdiction. "In the past also, we took up repair of bridges that are being maintained by the state agencies," said a KMC official. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). New flyovers fail to clear Ranchi's traffic gridlock

1 2 Ranchi: Even after the inauguration of three major flyovers in the state capital, traffic chaos continues to plague Ranchi. Congestion on Ratu Road, Lalpur, Kutchery, and Kantatoli remains severe, while near Siramtoli, jams are routine because of the ongoing construction of a connecting corridor. "Every evening, it takes me 40 minutes to cover what should actually be a 10-minute ride. The flyover is good, but below it, the market is so crowded that traffic moves inch by inch," said Ramesh Singh, an autorickshaw driver who operates on Ratu Road. Daily commuters echo the same frustration. "We thought the Kantatoli and Siramtoli flyovers would cut down our travel time, but diversions and unfinished stretches only make things worse," said Anjali Mishra, who drives daily from Lalpur to Harmu. NHAI regional officer M T Attarde said, "We received reports suggesting a lack of public awareness. On Ratu Road, jams are caused by markets where supplies from other districts are delivered. To resolve this, we may have to talk to RMC for market arrangements. It will ease the traffic downside." Traffic jams near Siramtoli are caused due to the construction of the connecting flyover between Kantatoli and Siramtoli. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Could Be the Best Time to Trade Gold in 5 Years IC Markets Learn More Undo People are forced to take diversions even for simple routes. "The half-finished connecting corridor between Kantatoli and Siramtoli forces vehicles to take long detours, funnelling traffic into already saturated by-lanes," said Ram Naresh, another auto driver. The 4.18 km-long Ratu Road flyover, built at Rs 291 crore was inaugurated in July 2025; the 2.4 km-long Kantatoli flyover, built at Rs 224 crore was opened in October 2024; and the 2.34 km-long, Rs 355-crore Siramtoli flyover launched in June 2025. Lalpur main road remains one of the city's worst choke points even after new flyovers. Vehicles pile up near the traffic signal because service lanes are narrow and encroached. "From Lalpur to Circular Road, it's a nightmare. Sometimes I'm late to college even though I leave 30 minutes early," said Priya Sharma, a student of St. Xavier's College. Inter-State Buses Add To Traffic Misery In City

Nagpur: Even as the debate over the role of private buses in creating traffic congestion continues, a new dimension has been added with inter-state buses now under the scanner. According to local transport operators and traffic officials, buses arriving from other states are causing more chaos on city roads as they lack designated parking spaces and halt for extended periods to pick up passengers. Sources said that a large number of buses from Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Gujarat enter the city daily. Unlike Nagpur-based long-distance or inter-city buses, which usually pick up passengers and leave within a short time, these outside operators tend to stay parked on busy roads for hours. "Many of these buses accomodate passengers beyond their seating capacity and wait on the streets for longer hours until they secure extra passengers. This adds to the already heavy traffic burden," said one local operator. The problem is severe on Central Avenue, one of Nagpur's busiest roads. Already congested during peak hours, the stretch regularly sees long queues of inter-state buses parked in tandem, blocking large portions of the road and leaving little space for regular commuters. Interestingly, during police action on Wednesday, the major focus was on Central Avenue where the highest number of actions were taken. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Many Malaysians don't know about this! iOS Credit Read More Undo "Hyderabad-based buses are comparatively prompt as they pick up and depart quickly. But vehicles from other states are the ones that halt for longer durations," the operator added. Apart from Central Avenue, the buses also use pick-up and drop-off points at Bole Petrol Pump, Ravi Nagar, and Chhatrapati Square. All three locations are critical junctions, and frequent halts by heavy vehicles further compound the traffic jams. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
