ICC Qatar unveils commission to boost private sector sustainability

The International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) Qatar, in collaboration with the Al Attiyah Foundation, has launched the ICC Qatar Environment & Energy Commission – a landmark initiative aimed at galvanising the private sector's role in advancing Qatar's sustainable energy and climate goals.
The commission, unveiled during a high-level event in Doha on Wednesday, will serve as the country's premier platform for private-sector engagement on climate policy, environmental stewardship, and the energy transition. Aligned with global frameworks such as the Paris Agreement and the UN Sustainable Development Goals, the commission's establishment marks a significant step in reinforcing commitment to sustainability and economic diversification under the Qatar National Vision 2030.
The roadmap unveiled at the event outlines a phased implementation strategy, including the formation of dedicated working groups focused on low-carbon energy transition, sustainable water and desalination, and emissions mitigation through tools such as carbon markets and carbon capture.
The commission will also engage closely with national entities such as the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, KAHRAMAA, and Qatar Energy, while fostering strategic alliances with international partners including the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), and the UN Global Compact.
ICC Qatar Secretary General Sheikha Tamader Al Thani said, 'The establishment of the ICC Qatar Environment & Energy Commission represents a significant step in advancing our commitment to sustainability as a key driver of long-term economic resilience and private sector leadership. This commission provides a dedicated platform for constructive dialogue, policy advocacy, and actionable collaboration between business, government, and global institutions.'
She also pointed out: 'Through the commission work, we aim to align with the objectives of the Qatar National Vision 2030, while actively contributing to international frameworks and initiatives. Together with our partners at the Al Attiyah Foundation, we are confident that this commission will catalyze innovative solutions and position Qatar's private sector as a leader in the global energy transition.'
Speaking at the launch, Colman Hands, co-chair of the commission, emphasised the importance of private-sector leadership in addressing climate challenges. 'This Commission is designed to be a dynamic force, connecting policy, innovation, and investment in ways that can drive real change,' he stated.
The ICC is the world's largest business organisation, representing over 45 million companies in more than 100 countries. ICC promotes international trade, responsible business conduct, and a global approach to regulation through a unique mix of advocacy, standard- setting, and dispute resolution.
Operating under the Qatar Chamber of Commerce and Industry, ICC Qatar facilitates dialogue between the Qatari business community and international regulatory bodies, helping ensure that national policies align with global standards and that Qatari businesses are effectively represented on the world stage.

Shura Council okays draft law on persons with disabilities
QNA Doha The Shura Council has approved the draft law on persons with disabilities in its amended form and referred it to the esteemed government, after reviewing the report of the Legal and Legislative Affairs Committee and discussing its details with their Excellencies the members. The Shura Council, chaired by Speaker HE Hassan bin Abdullah Al Ghanim, took the decision on Monday after holding a debate on the report of the Social Affairs, Labor, and Housing Committee on the request for a general discussion submitted by several members regarding the conditions of persons with disabilities. During the discussion of the report, Al Ghanim emphasized that the achievements made in supporting and empowering persons with disabilities are the fruit of the ongoing efforts of the esteemed government, in accordance with the directives of His Highness the Amir of the State of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and within the framework of Qatar National Vision 2030 and its development strategies. He highlighted the importance of reinforcing these efforts by providing a comprehensive and supportive environment that enables persons with disabilities to fulfill their role as an active partner in the advancement of society, while stressing the need to overcome the existing challenges that continue to hinder it. During his review of the report, Chairman of the Social Affairs, Labor, and Housing Committee HE Abdulrahman bin Yousuf Al Khulaifi referred to the meetings and consultations held by the committee, review of the opinions of specialists and stakeholders, and the recommendations aimed at developing policies related to persons with disabilities and improving the quality of services provided to them. After extensive discussion of the report, the Council decided to submit a proposal to the esteemed government, which included several recommendations aimed at improving the conditions of persons with disabilities. These recommendations include establishing a unified database, reducing working hours, granting special leave to parents in entities not subject to the Human Resources Law and creating positions for sign language interpreters and qualified specialists in service sectors. Also among the recommendations that contribute to integrating persons with disabilities into society are the development of university curricula, the establishment of specialized institutes, rehabilitation centers, and specialized social club along with including them in the health insurance system and increasing their social security pensions. At the outset of the meeting, the legislature hailed HH the Amir's participation in the Second Summit of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) on May 27 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The legislative body affirmed that this participation reflects the State of Qatar's commitment to enhancing strategic openness to Asian countries and activating channels of communication and cooperation, which contributes to achieving mutual interests and supports initiatives aimed at consolidating sustainable development and regional stability. The Shura Council also approved a draft law amending some provisions of Law No (7) of 2021 regarding the Shura Council and referred it to the esteemed government, after reviewing and discussing the committee's report thereon. Moreover, the Council also reviewed a proposal to amend some provisions of the Shura Council's internal regulations, issued by Law No (8) of 2024, and decided to refer it to the Legal and Legislative Affairs Committee for further review. The Council then reviewed the report on its participation in the discussion session organized by the Coalition of Women Parliamentarians from Arab Countries to Combat Violence against Women, entitled 'The Arab Declaration Against All Forms of Violence Against Women and Girls,' which was held via videoconferencing last March. The Council also reviewed a report on its delegation's participation in the Arab Forum for Sustainable Development (AFSD) 2025, held in Beirut, last April. The Shura Council's meeting was attended by several officials from ministries and care and rehabilitation centers for persons with disabilities, along with stakeholders and activists in this field.

New ESG manual to empower SMEs for sustainable future
Tribune News Network Doha Qatar Development Bank (QDB) and the Gulf Organisation for Research and Development (GORD) have officially launched the ESG Guidance Manual for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Qatar during a high-level event titled 'ESG for Qatar's Business Leaders' held at Marsa Malaz Kempinski, Doha. Organized by GORD in collaboration with QDB, the event convened senior executives, sustainability experts, and policymakers to explore the strategic importance of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) integration and to unveil QDB's newly developed manual. The event also welcomed senior representatives from Qatar's leading financial institutions, including the Qatar Central Bank (QCB) and the Qatar Stock Exchange (QSE). Jointly developed by QDB and GORD, the ESG Guidance Manual offers a practical and scalable roadmap tailored to help SMEs embed ESG principles into their core business operations. The manual aims to align SMEs with the Qatar National Vision 2030, enhance their sustainability performance, and help them navigate evolving global regulatory requirements. Drawing on GORD's technical expertise and leadership in sustainability, the manual serves as both a strategic enabler and a compliance toolkit, equipping businesses to transition toward a low-carbon, resilient economy. During the launch, Dr. Yousef Alhorr, Founding Chairman of GORD, stated, 'The ESG Guidance Manual reflects Qatar's proactive commitment to empowering its SME sector to adapt to the evolving global ESG landscape. This initiative not only enhances the global competitiveness of Qatari SMEs in carbon-conscious markets but also reinforces their contribution to the goals of Qatar National Vision 2030 and broader international climate objectives.' Dr. Hamad Salem Mejegheer, Executive Director of SME Development of QDB, added, 'At Qatar Development Bank, we remain committed to strengthening the SME ecosystem, recognizing its vital role as a driver of economic growth and diversification. Following the official launch, the event featured a series of technical sessions that offered participants in-depth insights into ESG fundamentals and regulatory developments. Discussions covered upcoming QCB guidelines, the implications of QSE's adoption of the IFRS S1/S2 standards, and how ESG ratings influence investment and financing decisions. Experts also addressed the role of digital solutions in streamlining ESG reporting and management. The sessions further explored strategies for embedding ESG into corporate decision-making and managing associated risks. The day concluded with a high-level panel discussion featuring leading experts and business leaders, emphasizing ESG as a strategic imperative and showcasing real-world examples of ESG-led business transformation and long-term value creation.

QNB teaches kids sustainability through special art workshop
Tribune News Network Doha In celebration of World Environment Day, QNB's Corporate Social Responsibility team organized a special art workshop for children as part of the Bank's commitment to environmental sustainability and community engagement. The workshop featured a number of activities for children to create sustainable items such as using real tree leaves on canvas and paper. Children also used wooden coasters to learn more about recycling and the importance of repurposing materials. This initiative supports the Bank's sustainability framework by raising awareness about the importance of following environmentally friendly practices. It also aligns with the Group's Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) policies as well as the Qatar National Vision 2030, to promote responsible practices through community engagement. The Bank arranged an additional workshop for children of its staff delivered by students of GEMS American Academy. The workshop titled 'Planting the roots of tomorrow' educated children on the importance of conserving natural resources and contributing towards a sustainable future. The children were taught how to plant on their own and take care of their plants at home.
