Russian President Putin to visit India following PM Modi's invitation during bilateral talks
Moscow: Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held telephone talks. This was reported by the official website of the Russian President.
The two leaders spoke by phone to discuss the strategic strength of Russia-India relations, which TV BRICS described as a uniquely privileged partnership.
President Putin reiterated his condolences over the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, and as cited by TV BRICS, both sides stressed the urgent need for continued cooperation in combating terrorism.
During the exchange, Prime Minister Modi congratulated President Putin and the people of Russia on the upcoming 80th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War, which he described, as reported by TV BRICS, as a shared commemoration for both nations.
PM Modi also extended an invitation to President Putin to visit India for the traditional annual bilateral summit, a gesture that, as per TV BRICS, was warmly received and accepted by the Russian side.
Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth participated in Victory Day celebrations during his visit to Russia from May 8 to 9. The celebrations were organised on May 9, in Moscow to commemorate 80th anniversary of the victory of Soviet People in the Second World War (1941-45).
According to a release, Minister Sanjay Seth laid a wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and witnessed the Victory Day Parade, along with the distinguished delegates from other countries. The participation of Raksha Rajya Mantri in the Victory Day Parade is the symbol of longstanding special and privileged strategic partnership between India and Russia.
During the visit, the MoS Defence called on Russian President Vladimir Putin and extended congratulations for the 80th Victory Day. MoS also held a bilateral meeting with the Russian Deputy Defence Minister Colonel General Alexander Fomin and thanked the Government & people of Russia for their support in India's fight against the menace of state-sponsored cross-border terrorism.
The two Ministers also discussed multifaceted military & military - technical cooperation and agreed to further deepen ties within the framework of existent institutional mechanisms. The two sides will continue to hold regular consultations and enhance cooperation in the evolving situation.

President of Cyprus receiving PM Modi reflective of strong ties: MEA
Larnaca: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived in Cyprus on his first visit to the Mediterranean country on Sunday. Upon his arrival, he was received by the President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) called the "special gesture" reflective of strong mutual ties. He provided details of the interactions which PM Modi will hold in Cyprus. The details were shared by MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal in a video message on X. "Our ties with Cyprus is historic, warm and enduring. Today, on arrival at the airport, he was received by the President of Cyprus. This is reflective of how strong our ties are. This was a special gesture from the Cyprus side," he said. He informed that PM Modi and President Christodoulides would address a business roundtable to discuss ideas for strengthening the India-Cyprus business partnership. He noted that the business partnership would explore newer areas of engagement such as "data, innovation, digital payments, shipbuilding, ports". "Prime Minister will receive a ceremonial welcome at the Presidential Palace after which he will have delegation level talks and press engagement and thereafter he will depart Cyprus for his next destination," he informed. Signficantly, MEA Spokesperson informed that the President Christodoulides will host a banquet luncheon in honour of Prime Minister, "Today in the evening he (President Christodoulides) is hosting a private dinner for Prime Minister." Prime Minister Modi on Sunday received a heartfelt welcome from the Indian diaspora in Limassol, as he arrived in Cyprus as part of his three-nation tour, including Canada and Croatia. PM Modi was seen being greeted by the diaspora with bouquets as he arrived at his hotel and the Prime Minister also engaged with the diaspora, exchanging greetings and acknowledging their support. It is the first-ever visit by an Indian PM to the Mediterranean nation. His arrival is being described as a historic moment by both Indian and Cypriot diplomatic sources. In a post on X, Prime Minister Modi thanked the Indian community for their affection. He wrote, "I thank the Indian community for the affection. India will keep working to deepen ties with Cyprus in the times to come." PM Modi, accompanied by a large delegation of around 100 officials, is visiting Cyprus at the invitation of President Nicos Christodoulides. The visit holds significance as Cyprus has been a consistent supporter of India's positions on Kashmir, cross-border terrorism, and reforms in the United Nations Security Council. Cyprus takes over the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union from January 1. The visit will reaffirm the shared commitment of the two countries to deepen bilateral ties and strengthen India's engagement with the Mediterranean region and the European Union.

Modi-Carney talks could unlock India-Canada trade potential says Canadian strategist Lubimov
Vancouver: Lubimov Kirk, a Canadian-based Financial Strategist, stated in an exclusive interview with ANI that the entrance of incoming Prime Minister Mark Carney presents an opportunity for Ottawa and New Delhi to begin stalled trade discussions and increase collaboration on energy, technology, and essential minerals. "Canada's invitation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for next week's G7 summit might restart a relationship with 'enormous, mainly untapped economic upside," according to Vancouver-based financial analyst Kirk Lubimov. Lubimov emphasised that, notwithstanding recent tensions, India's attendance at the G7 summit demonstrates acceptance of its growing global status. India is presently the world's fourth-largest economy. Ignoring that reality would be both stupid and counterproductive for Canada," he said. "Canada-India commerce potential is huge," Lubimov said, citing Canadian liquefied natural gas, battery-grade nickel, and rare earth reserves that align with India's clean tech goals. He projected that Modi and Carney would hold a separate bilateral discussion on the G7 sidelines to restart the Early Progress Trade Agreement, which has been inactive since diplomatic ties worsened last year. Lubimov praised Carney for having a "more level-headed approach" than his predecessor, Justin Trudeau. Trudeau's tenure was marred by claims of Indian involvement in the 2023 assassination of separatist activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar and increased Khalistani activism in Canada. "Carney doesn't appear beholden to those pressure groups, and that alone signals a reset," he said. Lubimov called Khalistani separatism "a national security threat that's damaged Canada's international image," citing rallies where effigies of Indian leaders were burned and protesters openly threatened violence. Viral photos from a recent Vancouver demonstration showing Pakistani flags, he added, "confirm what our intelligence service said a year ago that Islamabad is working hand in glove with these activists." He urged Ottawa to move on India's pending extradition requests for 26 fugitives and to address gaps in student visa screening. "Millions have arrived on study permits with virtually no background checks." Trump says Putin wished him happy birthday, both agree to end Israel-Iran war
Washington DC: US President Donald Trump on Saturday (local time) revealed that he received a call from Russian President Vladimir Putin on his 79th birthday and and talked about the war between Israel and Iran, which both leaders agreed "should end." The conversation occurred before Trump is set to mark hi 79th birthday in the evening by attending a military parade on the streets of Washington DC to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the US Army. Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social, "President Putin called this morning to very nicely wish me a Happy Birthday, but to more importantly, talk about Iran, a country he knows very well." The phone call, which lasted around an hour, primarily focused on the escalating tensions between Israel and Iran. Trump mentioned that Putin is well-versed in Iranian affairs and shared his concerns about the conflict. "The call lasted approximately 1 hour. He feels, as do I, this war in Israel-Iran should end, to which I explained, his war should also end," said Trump. Trump emphasised that the situation in the region is "very alarming" and urged Putin to end Russia's involvement in the Ukraine. Trump said he and Putin spent "much less time" talking about Russia's war in Ukraine during the approximately one-hour call. He said that topic "will be for next week." The leaders also touched on a potential prisoner swap, with large numbers of prisoners being exchanged immediately from both sides. "We talked at length. Much less time was spent talking about Russia/Ukraine, but that will be for next week. He is doing the planned prisoner swaps - large numbers of prisoners are being exchanged, immediately, from both sides," added Trump. Although the majority of the conversation centered around the Middle East, Trump did bring up the Ukraine conflict, stating that they would discuss it further the following week. Putin reportedly briefed Trump on his recent talks with Iranian and Israeli leaders, reiterating Russia's proposal for mutually acceptable solutions on the Iranian nuclear issue. The conversation marks the fifth call between the two leaders since Trump took office and signalled a shift in US policy toward Russia, a significant departure from the stance held by his predecessor, Joe Biden. While Biden rallied international support to condemn Russia's 2022 invasion, Trump has cultivated a friendly relationship with Vladimir Putin, often praising the Russian leader's strategic thinking. Trump's stance has raised eyebrows, particularly his tendency to blame both Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for the ongoing war. Trump has criticised Zelenskyy's handling of the conflict, even labeling him a "dictator" due to postponed elections in Ukraine. Meanwhile, Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov confirmed the call between Trump and Putin. He said, "Vladimir Putin condemned Israel's military operation against Iran and expressed serious concern about a possible escalation of the conflict, which would have unpredictable consequences for the entire situation in the Middle East." According to Ushakov, Trump described events in the Middle East as "very alarming." The two leaders also said they do not rule out a return to the negotiating track on Iran's nuclear program, Ushakov said. Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Spokesperson Effie Defrin said that the Israeli Air Force's (IAF) "ongoing operation" has lasted nearly 40 hours and targeted over 150 objectives. "IAF aircraft are completing a wave of strikes against military and strategic assets, nuclear program sites, and high-ranking figures in Iran's terror leadership. These are significant targets at the very heart of Iran and its terrorist proxies," Defrin said. The IDF confirmed that they are currently striking military targets in Tehran. Air defenses were activated in several Iranian cities, including Tehran, Isfahan, and Mashhad, Iran's state-owned Press TV reported. Iranian state media also posted videos purportedly of air defenses intercepting projectiles in Zanjan and Khorramabad. Iran has launched a new barrage of projectiles towards Israel, state media outlet IRNA reported late Saturday.
