MLB Insiders Link Rex Sox All-Star Jarren Duran to Phillies
MLB Insiders Link Rex Sox All-Star Jarren Duran to Phillies originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
The Philadelphia Phillies' outfield problem is becoming less noticeable thanks to the resurgence of Brandon Marsh. However, left fielder Max Kepler still presents a sizable problem. The one-time MVP candidate is hitting just .211 with nine home runs. With Kepler slumping through his first (and most likely only) year in Philadelphia, two MLB insiders have speculated about replacing him with an All-Star from Boston.

In a recent article from ESPN, Kiley McDaniel and Jeff Passan listed the Phillies as a potential 'best fit' for Boston Red Sox leftfielder Jarren Duran. They made their case writing this about Duran:
'Duran had a huge breakout season in 2024, posting the seventh-best WAR in the majors at 6.7. He overperformed his underlying metrics, though -- i.e., had some lucky outcomes -- and those metrics have regressed a bit this year. Now he's underperforming them -- he has been unlucky -- so his true talent is somewhere south of that star-level 6.7 figure but better than the roughly 2 WAR (commensurate with a solid regular) he's on pace for this season.'

Last season, Duran hit .285 with 21 home runs and 34 stolen bases, leading MLB in doubles and triples. Getting a player of that caliber would be an astounding grab for the Phillies. However, Duran has been on a slide, hitting .257/.309/.406 with five home runs on the year. His defense has also suffered, posting -5 outs above average, way down from the impressive 11 he posted last year.

Any team that trades for him would be interested in acquiring 2024 Duran, not the current version. However, it may not come to that at all. The chances of the Red Sox selling low on Duran with years of control left and the DH spot open (having traded Rafael Devers) are not good. McDaniel and Passan estimate there is a 25 percent chance of a Jarren Duran trade. Still, if the Red Sox are willing to sell, Duran's bat would offer an upgrade over Kepler's even in its current state.

Dwyane Wade Makes Stunning Admission on LeBron James Being ‘Greatest Heat Player Ever'
Dwyane Wade Makes Stunning Admission on LeBron James Being 'Greatest Heat Player Ever' originally appeared on Athlon Sports. In a remarkable display of humility and sportsmanship, NBA legend Dwyane Wade has publicly acknowledged LeBron James as the greatest player to ever don a Miami Heat jersey. Advertisement The admission, shared via a post on X by @HeatCulture13 on Wednesday, comes with a reflective quote from Wade himself: 'I have the greatest body of work of anybody that's ever put a Miami Heat jersey on. If you wanna be honest, LeBron James is the greatest player to ever put a Miami Heat jersey on,' Wade stated. This candid statement accompanies a striking image of Wade (No. 3) and James (No. 6) standing side by side in their Heat uniforms, a testament to their iconic partnership during the "Big Three" era from 2010 to 2014. Together, they led the Heat to two NBA Finals championships and four Eastern Conference titles, cementing their legacy. This admission not only underscores the mutual respect between the two superstars but also reignites debates about their respective impacts on the Heat franchise. Brian Windhorst Hints at Big Push From Heat For Another Superstar Still On the Table
Brian Windhorst Hints at Big Push From Heat For Another Superstar Still On the Table originally appeared on Athlon Sports. ESPN's Brian Windhorst has sparked speculation about the Miami Heat's future moves, suggesting a strategic wait for a bigger prize than Kevin Durant. Advertisement In a recent appearance on the Rich Eisen Show, Windhorst noted that teams, including possibly the Heat, are holding back assets, hinting at a larger target. "I'm reacting off teams' actions. When you see teams not go after KD, to save their assets, for something bigger," Windhorst said, leaving fans and analysts guessing. The implication? The Heat might be eyeing Giannis Antetokounmpo, despite recent trade proposal setbacks due to limited assets. Windhorst's comments align with the Heat's history of bold moves, but also highlight the challenges posed by their current roster and draft capital constraints. Advertisement Pat Riley's cautious approach, as Windhorst suggests, could be a calculated risk, banking on Antetokounmpo's potential willingness to leave the Milwaukee Bucks. Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo© Trevor Ruszkowski-Imagn Images This theory gains traction given the Heat's reputation as a desired destination for stars, as shown by LeBron James signing with them in the 2010 free agency. However, the feasibility of such a move remains uncertain, with the Heat's ability to outbid other contenders in question due to the assets they may view as untouched. After failing to put up a sufficient enough offer to land superstar forward Kevin Durant, Pat Riley and the Heat have lost a significant amount of momentum in the NBA offseason thus far. Advertisement Windhorst's insight reignites hope among Heat fans, but also underscores the high stakes and unpredictable nature of NBA trades. As the offseason unfolds, all eyes will be on Miami's next big play. Minnesota Timberwolves will make the first selection of the second round of the NBA draft
Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) — The NBA draft resumes Thursday night with the Minnesota Timberwolves making the first selection of the second round. The draft picks up where it left off at Barclays Center in Brooklyn — though in a much smaller portion of it than was used Wednesday for the first round. The second round begins with the No. 31 pick and this year runs through No. 59 instead of 60, with the New York Knicks having been penalized their selection for tampering by negotiating with Jalen Brunson too soon before eventually signing the guard away from Dallas in 2022. The NBA points to the success of players such as Brunson, who became an All-NBA selection in New York, and three-time MVP Nikola Jokic of Denver when touting the types of difference-makers who could come out of the second round. The Mavericks, who selected Cooper Flagg with the No. 1 pick on Wednesday, do not currently have a selection in Round 2. The NBA began a two-night format for the draft last year after doing it one night ended too late. ___ AP NBA: recommended
