Gayton McKenzie pledges new sports facilities to boost wellness in Wentworth
The Department of Sports, Arts and Culture held the I Choose 2 be Active movement to commemorates World Move for Health Day in Wentworth, south of Durban, on Saturday.
Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie promised two sporting developments within 60 days in the community of Wentworth on Saturday.
McKenzie was in Durban for the Move4Health Wellness Campaign, and he is expected to lead a series of impactful initiatives across KwaZulu-Natal as part of the department's ongoing commitment to youth development, community wellness, and social transformation through sport, mentorship, and public engagement.
Department spokesperson Stacey-Lee Khojane said the event forms part of the national I Choose 2 be Active movement and commemorates World Move for Health Day, a globally recognised initiative. The event advocates for daily physical activity as a cornerstone of long-term health and well-being.
'We are here to make sure we bring sports equipment to sporting clubs and to the children here. We made a promise that we will build a combi court in 60 days. We also promised to provide an outdoor gym for older community members. We also put a timeframe of 60 days for that project,' McKenzie said.

This comes amid a severe outbreak of the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in Brazil, which led to South Africa suspending its poultry imports from the South American country. Earlier this year the South African Poultry Association (SAPA) warned that the country could face catastrophic consequences without vaccination against the highly pathogenic bird flu. South Africa's Minister of Agriculture, John Steenhuisen, said the Department's vaccination team, together with the Agricultural Research Council, would be working through a list of farms received by the poultry industry and would be prioritising high-risk areas. 'We have secured vaccine supply, ensured cold chain capacity, and are building in traceability and reporting mechanisms as part of a wider preparedness strategy,' Steenhuisen said. The government's vaccination team, which consists of poultry specialist vets from the University of Pretoria, would be further assisted by 50 animal health technicians on short term contracts. Combating foot-and-mouth disease The Department of Agriculture also provided an update on its progress in tackling the severe foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) outbreak in the country. It said vaccines to cover the KwaZulu-Natal area had now been ordered. More than 900,000 doses have been ordered, with the first batch expected to arrive next week. The Department said there were still signs of active virus circulation in the province, within the Disease Management Area, but some outbreaks have been detected outside of this zone. Karan Beef is currently working with State Veterinary Services on a containment plan, following an outbreak at its Heidelberg facility this week. 'These plans are not only about responding to outbreaks, but also about building permanent infrastructure to manage future risks," Steenhuisen said. 'More broadly, we are establishing a Biosecurity Council that will bring together the South African Police Service (SAPS), veterinarians, scientists, the Border Management Authority, and industry. Hluyo painted a grim picture of the finances at Safa, saying the association is in major need of sponsors, especially for its junior teams. These include the South Africa Under-20s who won the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) in Egypt last month despite having had poor preparation that included travelling by bus to Mozambique for the Cosafa U-20 Championship, the qualifier for the Afcon. Safa received revenue of only R356m as sponsorship, while they had little income from their broadcast deal with the SABC, which is cash-strapped, Hluyo said. However, members of the portfolio committee said it would be difficult for them to recommend that sports minister Gayton McKenzie provide Safa with more money if the association cannot disclose the exact amount they receive from sponsors that include two betting companies, Hollywoodbets and 10bet. 'In terms of our sponsorship contracts we've got confidentiality clauses. We'll be in breach of those contracts if we disclose sponsorship agreements and their value,' Hluyo said. As not all members of the committee were able to ask questions, the meeting was adjourned to a date to be determined. Jordaan welcomed that decision as he insisted Safa has nothing to hide.
