On Saturday,
Temba Bavuma
guided South Africa to a historic triumph in the World Test Championship — their first ICC title in 27 years. Bavuma led from the front in a five-wicket win over Australia in a thrilling final at Lord's.
The match saw dramatic momentum shifts, but it was South Africa who ultimately prevailed, thanks to a brilliant 136 from Aiden Markram.
While Markram stole the limelight with his match-winning knock, Bavuma's gritty 66 off 134 balls was the true backbone of the chase. Battling a hamstring injury sustained the day before, Bavuma dug deep, sharing a crucial 147-run partnership with Markram for the third wicket — a stand that turned the tide South Africa's way.
His 66 was a captain's knock in every sense: tough, composed, and full of character. Limping between the wickets in visible pain, Bavuma refused to yield. His earlier contribution — a valuable 36 in the first innings — also helped keep South Africa afloat after they were bowled out for 138 in reply to Australia's 212.
This WTC triumph is likely to be the crowning glory of Bavuma's career — a fitting milestone for the lad from Langa in the Western Cape, who has shattered barriers and defied expectations at every step.
Under his leadership, South Africa has shed the painful 'chokers' tag to lift the biggest prize in Test cricket.
"Langa is buzzing, South Africa is beaming, and the world has just witnessed the excellence of one of our own — the unshakable, ice-cool, and history-making Captain Temba Bavuma!" Langa Ward 51 Councillor Lwazi Phakade said in a statement.
"As the Ward Councillor of Langa, I am filled with pride and emotion as we celebrate the Proteas' sensational victory over Australia in the World Test Championship final.
But for us here in Ward 51, this win hits different because the man at the centre of it all, the one lifting that trophy high, is a child of Langa Township.
"Temba Bavuma is more than a cricketing genius. He is the embodiment of discipline, courage, and consistency. From the streets of Rubusana to the grand stages of international sport, he has carried the hopes of this community with humility and distinction. His success is not just his own — it is ours as a people.
"He represents every child playing cricket in a narrow street with no shoes. He represents every parent who sacrifices so their children can chase dreams. He represents the spirit of Langa: bold, talented, and unstoppable."
The Ward 51 Councillor also declared the plans to celebrate the local hero once he returns.
'The Sun is on us': Temba Bavuma soaks it in
"Now, let me be clear: as your Councillor, I take my duties very seriously... but I also take celebrations VERY seriously!
"So, we will be rolling out the red carpet for Temba Bavuma when he returns home. The community of Langa will host an unforgettable homecoming celebration, because when one of our own conquers the world, we must honour him like the champion he is.
"To the Proteas: thank you for making us proud.
"To Temba Bavuma: thank you for reminding us that Langa doesn't just produce legends — we raise captains."

Mitchell Johnson urges selectors to look beyond Starc, Nathan Lyon after WTC loss

Former Australian cricketer Mitchell Johnson has urged the Australian selectors to introduce younger talents to the Test side. He believes that the ageing veterans should not be considered a guaranteed spot going forward, following their defeat in the World Test Championship final to South Africa at Lord' wrote in a column for The West Australian on how they needed to begin their transition. He also questioned if several senior stars were extending their careers for the Ashes to get that perfect send-off as well. The former left-arm pacer was critical of the experienced bowling unit, especially Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon who put up disappointing performances during the summit successful 'big four' bowling attack of Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon can't be taken for granted as a lock going forward either," Johnson wrote. Johnson even indirectly questioned Hazlewood's decision to continue playing in the Indian Premier League (IPL) after the tournament had been suspended briefly due to the heightened cross-border tensions between India and bowler had reportedly travelled back to Brisbane to undergo rehabilitation for his return to the tournament. Only Mitchell Starc who played for the Delhi Capitals opted to not return to rejoin his franchise."We've seen concerns about Hazlewood's fitness in recent years, and his decision to prioritise returning to the delayed Indian Premier League over his national team preparations raised eyebrows. Lyon didn't look his best on day three either," he prompted the World Cup-winner to even ponder on whether some of the senior stars were extending their careers till the Ashes for a send-off. Johnson was critical of this and wanted the side to embrace the next generation to build on their Test team for the future."If veteran players are sticking around just for the Ashes as a send-off, it does beg the question of whether that's the right mindset. It's crucial that we embrace the future and build confidence in selecting our next Test players," he have already begun introducing other talents to their side after Sean Abbot was included in the squad ahead of the West Indies Test series. However, it remains to be seen if the all-rounder will be given a long rope in the Watch

Last Updated: Makram scored 136 runs for South Africa in the 2nd innings of the WTC 2025 final and, for his super show with the bat, won the POTM award. Aiden Markram scored 136 runs from 207 balls for South Africa in the second innings to help them chase down the target of 282 runs and secure a famous win by five wickets over Australia in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025 final. For his super batting show at the Lord's, the 30-year-old right-handed batter won the Player of the Match award. During his stay at the crease, Markram hammered 14 fours and added 147 runs for the third wicket with captain Temba Bavuma (66 runs). The record stand between the two batters helped South Africa end their 27-year-old long wait for a second ICC title. After South Africa stunned Australia at the Home of Cricket to become the third team to win the WTC title, star Indian wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant took to X to share a post in which he congratulated 'brother' Markram for his 'great knock.' 'Well played, Aiden brother . I am so happy for you—what a great knock under pressure. You have made us all proud and congratulations to South Africa on lifting the WTC mace," Pant captioned the photo tweet. Well played, Aiden brother . Ex India Cricketer Feels England Tests 'Excellent Opportunity For Young Team'

Last Updated: Venkatapathy Raju feels the series against England will be a crucial test for the young Indian team. Former India left-arm spinner Venkatapathy Raju believes that the upcoming five-match Test series against England, beginning in Leeds on June 20, offers a significant opportunity for a young Indian team to establish themselves and later confidently compete against any team worldwide. With experienced players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli moving on from Test cricket, the relatively inexperienced Indian batting line-up faces a formidable challenge in England, marking the start of their 2025-27 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. In the current squad, only KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, and Ravindra Jadeja have scored Test centuries in England. 'People always say to take advantage of home conditions, but there have been many upsets, such as India losing to New Zealand at home. This shows anything can change at any time. This is a very young Indian team with good balance. 'The England team also has a relatively new bowling attack, with James Anderson retiring and some players injured. We have a few experienced batters in the Indian team who can handle that bowling, making it an evenly matched series. 'England has never reached the finals of the World Test Championship and is keen on winning more games. Five Test matches provide an excellent opportunity for this young Indian team to settle and challenge any team globally, aiming for the next WTC edition," Raju told IANS on Sunday. With Yashasvi Jaiswal, B Sai Sudharsan, and Dhruv Jurel on their first England tour, and Karun Nair making a comeback, while captain Shubman Gill is yet to prove his consistency in overseas conditions, India faces the task of ensuring a smooth transition. 'We need to give the team enough time to settle. We were used to seeing senior players like Rohit, Virat, and Ashwin, who have served India for over 15 years. Naturally, any team will miss such experienced players, but it also gives new players a chance. 'Everyone dreams of playing for their country, and Test cricket is the ultimate goal. It's up to players like Sai Sudharsan to establish themselves if given the opportunity. People already speak highly of him. 'Karun Nair, who scored a triple century but then lost his way, has performed well in domestic cricket to make a comeback. The selection committee should be congratulated for showing faith in him. The competition within the team looks healthy, and it's up to the players to make the most of this opportunity and become good Test cricketers," Raju added. Raju also praised the balanced combination of youth and experience in the bowling line-up. 'We have Jasprit Bumrah, Siraj, and Shardul Thakur, who were successful in the last England tour. Thakur fits in as an all-rounder. 'Nitish Reddy can also become a good all-rounder, having shown his batting capabilities. However, he needs to take on more bowling workload. Arshdeep adds variety to our bowling," Raju noted. Raju highlighted that England off-spinner Shoaib Bashir could be a surprise package for the Indian batters. Bashir achieved career-best figures of 6-81 in the second innings, contributing to England's victory over Zimbabwe by an innings and 45 runs in a one-off Test at Trent Bridge. Bashir, who debuted against India in Visakhapatnam last year, has taken four five-wicket hauls in 16 matches, with a total of 58 wickets. 'India has not been tested by any England Lions spinner in recent games. Bashir's height and consistency have been impressive. 'He knows the conditions well and has been a match-winner for England in spin bowling. His field placements have been brilliant, and he gets extra bounce with a nagging line similar to Nathan Lyon. He could be a surprise for the England team, as Indian batters have struggled against quality spin recently. 'Indian batters rarely play domestic cricket on turning pitches due to restrictions, favouring green tops in India. So, England players might struggle against Kuldeep and Ravindra Jadeja, but we should not overlook Bashir's potential impact against India," Raju concluded.
