Mining dept to officials: Ensure strict action against those involved in illgal sand mining

Time of India15-05-2025

Raipur: In a bid to clamp down on
illegal sand mining
and transportation ahead of the monsoon season,
Chhattisgarh mining department
has issued strict directives to district collectors and mining officials to ensure the smooth supply of sand for ongoing construction and development projects while preventing unauthorized activities that harm state revenue and the environment.
In a high-level state review meeting chaired by Mineral Resources Secretary P Dayanand, he has issued directives to intensify surveillance and enforcement through dedicated district-level task forces, instructing officials to take strict action against those involved in illegal mining operations. He stressed that protecting
mineral revenue
is a top govt priority, and any negligence will not be tolerated.
The move comes two days after a police constable was killed after being run over by a tractor in Balrampur district when he launched a raid against sand mafia.
Dayanand said that all approved sand mines must operate strictly within the legal limits set by their
environmental clearances
. Sand should only be mined and transported from authorized sources. Any illegal supply chain will face severe penalties.
He added that officials must ensure timely collection of mineral revenue. Within the next three months, more sand mines are to be identified and tendered through e-auction for legal allocation.

Priority will be given to mines with an area larger than five hectares, to meet the increasing demand. Collectors have been tasked with regularly reviewing and expediting pending cases related to environmental clearances.
In view of the mining ban period from June 10 to Oct 15, a pre-monsoon storage plan must be developed to maintain a stable
sand supply
through approved storage licenses.
Special emphasis was placed on ensuring that sand required for govt-backed projects like the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana and other construction activities is sourced only from authorized vendors.
In a significant move to increase official accountability, Dayanand announced that compliance with sand management policies will be included as a key evaluation metric in the confidential performance reports of mining officers.
This action signals a serious push from the state to ensure legal, transparent, and environmentally responsible sand mining, and is expected to impact both local governance and the construction industry significantly in the coming months.

Airport issues new SOP to tackle laser interference

Kolkata: Following a spate of laser light interference incidents threatening flight safety, Kolkata airport authorities issued a fresh set of standard operating procedures (SOPs) for Bidhannagar City Police and surrounding municipal bodies to tackle the issue. At least 13 such incidents were reported between Jan and April, prompting urgent coordination between law enforcement and local administrative units. Under the revised protocol, Bidhannagar cops have been directed to act immediately upon any laser interference report filed by the airport operator. "In case of a laser interference reported by us to NSCBI airport police station, they should immediately inform the police station or district administration concerned to identify the source of the light and take appropriate action under relevant laws. Once the violators are identified and the laser activity is stopped, a report has to be forwarded to the airport director," said an airport official. Cops patrolling around the airport have also been advised to keep a vigil on the use of lasers in the vicinity. If there is any request for a laser show or laser illumination, the cops shall not approve it. A laser light — often originating from nearby ceremonial events, like weddings, festivals, and circuses — can momentarily blind a pilot, leaving him incapacitated until vision is restored after a while. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Brass Idols - Handmade Brass Statues for Home & Gifting Luxeartisanship Buy Now Undo This is hazardous during the landing procedure when a plane descends 1,500 ft-2,000 ft per minute. "The problem is more acute when the pilot concentrates on the runway and then the laser lights cause distraction, causing temporary blindness," said an airline official. Municipal bodies of NKDA, Bidhannagar, Dum Dum, Madhyamgram, Barasat, and Barrackpore have been tasked with increasing public awareness through regular campaigns and advertisements, emphasizing the legal and safety ramifications of unauthorised laser use. According to Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA)'s mandate, laser lights are banned within an 18.5-km radius of an airport. Bidhannagar cops have repeatedly stressed that laser shows are banned within its jurisdiction and a large part of Barrackpore Commissionerate's territory. "There is a complete ban. We have also asked officers in charge of all police stations in our area to hold meetings with banquet operators and remind them that their licence will be cancelled if they continue to use such lights," said an officer. The SOP also directs prominent signage banning laser usage be mandatorily displayed at puja pandals, banquet halls, hotels, and circus tents.
