Jockey Luis Saez injured after falling from his horse in Blue Grass undercard race at Keeneland

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — Veteran jockey Luis Saez, who earned his second Belmont Stakes victory in June aboard Dornoch, is in stable condition at a hospital after falling from his mount at Keeneland on Tuesday.
The multiple graded stakes winner was injured after falling from Fateful Lightning in the second race on Keeneland's turf course. The horse tripped over the rider but was uninjured, a statement from the track said. Saez lay on the track for several minutes before being placed on a board and into an ambulance.
The statement added that Saez was being evaluated by UK HealthCare Medical Services and removed from remaining mounts on Tuesday including Brad Cox-trained colt Admiral Dennis in the Grade 1, $1.25 million Blue Grass feature, which awards qualifying points toward next month's 151st Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in Louisville.
Jockey Manny Franco was scheduled to replace Saez aboard Admiral Dennis in the Blue Grass.
Saez won the Belmont in 2021 aboard Essential Quality before riding Dornoch to a half-length victory over Mindframe last year in the 1 1/2-mile third jewel of the Triple Crown. He was a three-time Blue Grass winner, mostly recently aboard Tapit Trice in 2021.

Hurston Waldrep throws 6 scoreless innings in combined 2-hitter, Braves blank Guardians 2-0

CLEVELAND (AP) — Hurston Waldrep pitched six scoreless innings in a combined two-hitter and Nacho Alvarez Jr. and Michael Harris II each drove in a run, giving the Atlanta Braves a 2-0 victory over the Cleveland Guardians on Friday night. Waldrep (3-0) allowed two hits, both to Steven Kwan, in matching his longest outing of the season. The right-hander struck out a career-high seven and walked two before being followed by Daysbel Hernandez and Tyler Kinley. Raisel Iglesias the ninth for his 18th save in 23 opportunities, giving the Braves their third straight win. The Guardians were shut out for the 12th time and fell one game behind the Yankees for the final American League wild-card spot. Alvarez drew a bases-loaded walk in the fourth off Cleveland starter Joey Cantillo (3-3), scoring Ozzie Albies. Harris singled home pinch-runner Eli White in the ninth against Carlos Hernández. Braves star Ronald Acuña Jr. returned after missing 15 games with a right calf strain, going 0 for 3 with a walk. The former NL MVP, who had been sidelined since July 30, also was called out for baserunner interference in the fourth. Cantillo threw ball four to Alvarez in the fourth just after a fan ran onto the field. It required two security guards and a member of the grounds crew to remove him. Key stat Waldrep made his major league debut last season with the Braves and went 0-1 with a 16.71 ERA in two games, both starts. The 2023 first round pick has a 1.02 ERA in three appearances this year, giving up two runs in 17 2/3 innings. Up next Braves LHP Joey Wentz (3-3, 5.03 ERA) takes on Guardians RHP Slade Cecconi (5-5, 4.11 ERA) in the second game of the series. ___

Lee5 takes Portland Classic lead. Inkster falls shot short in bid to make cut at age 65

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Jeongeun Lee5 shot a 6-under 67 on Friday to take the lead in The Standard Portland Classic, while 65-year-old Juli Inkster fell short in her bid to become the oldest player to make a cut in LPGA Tour history. Lee5, the 36-year-old South Korean player, had a 12-under 132 total at Columbia Edgewater. Winless on the LPGA Tour, she birdied the final five holes on her front nine in the morning round. 'When we are playing well, we expect it to continue,' Lee5 said. 'So, I want to really concentrate and focus going into the weekend. The past two rounds I had great energy, good shots, and good putts.' Inkster, the Hall of Famer who won the 1999 event, followed her opening 69 with a 74 to miss the cut by a stroke. JoAnne Carner was 64 when she made the cut in the 2004 Chick Fil-A Charity Championship. 'Wasn't very inspiring,' Inkster said. 'I didn't drive the ball as well as I did yesterday. Kind of a grind out there today.' She played to prepare for the U.S. Senior Women's Open next week. Grace Kim of Australia and Gurleen Kaur of the United States were a stroke back on the tree-lined course. Kim had a 65, and Kaur shot 68. Akie Iwai had her second straight 67 to join Pajaree Anannarukarn (67) and Ashleigh Buhai (68) at 10 under. Amateur Kiara Romero had a 69 to get to 8 under. The University of Oregon star won the 2023 U.S. Girls' Junior and 2025 Big Ten title. 'It feels really good just to see my game match up against some of these pros, just getting more comfortable playing in front of crowds and stuff,' Romero said. 'My first time playing in front of a big crowd I kind of got a little bit shaken up and was nervous out there.' Two-time champion Brooke Henderson, a stroke back after an opening 65, had a 73 to fall to 6 under. The Canadian star is winless since January 2023 and has dropped to 52nd in the world. First-round leader Adela Cernousek followed her opening 64 with a 75 to drop to 5 under. Angel Yin, the top-ranked player in the field at No. 7, was 2 under after a 70. No. 9 Haeran Ryu also was 6 under, shooting 72. The tournament is the longest continuous event on the LPGA Tour except for the majors, dating to 1972. ___

Juli Inkster wanted a tune-up for Senior Open. She nearly set an LPGA record

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Juli Inkster went to The Standard Portland Classic to face some competition ahead of the U.S. Senior Women's Open. The 65-year-old Hall of Famer nearly wound up setting an LPGA record. Inkster opened with a 69 and was poised to become the oldest player in LPGA history to make a 36-hole cut until consecutive bogeys on her back nine led to a 74. She was at 1-under 143, and it was looking unlikely for her to be among the top 65 and ties to make the weekend. JoAnne Carner was 64 when she made the cut in the 2004 Chick Fil-A Charity Championship. 'I frigging love JoAnne Carner,' Inkster said. "Yeah, just kind of means that I have a passion for the game. I love the game. You know, I'm really happy I played this week. Kind of when I signed up was kind of like, `What are you doing?' 'I was free, I was out there with Hannah Green and Stacy (Lewis) and had a great time,' she said. 'Just love watching the young kids swing. It's so impressive. I think the game is in a really good shape and happy to be here.' Inkster was competing at an LPGA event for the first time since 2022. She was asked what it was like when players recognized her. 'Most of them think I am Joanne Carner,' Inkster said. She was disappointed at her finish, especially the way she struggled off the tee toward the end. Along with the two bogeys, she said she played the final two par 5s sloppily. Still, there were few regrets. The U.S. Senior Women's Open is next week at San Diego Country Club. 'I think it was really good for me to play, whether I win or lose next week, whatever,' Inkster said. 'I'm glad I put myself out there.' ___
