"Sanatan pride rebuilding with stronger determination," says VP Jagdeep Dhankhar

Puducherry [India], June 18 (ANI): Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Tuesday said that Sanatan pride was rebuilding in India with stronger determination. He recalled the historical importance of Takshashila, Nalanda, Mithila, and Vallabhi, calling them 'great centers of learning' that defined Bharat for the rest of the world.
While addressing students and faculty members at Pondicherry University, Dhankhar said, '...Sanatan pride is rebuilding. What was lost is being rebuilt with stronger determination.'
'Scholars from all over the world came to share their ideas and learn about our wisdom,' he said.
He spoke in detail about the destruction of Nalanda University, once home to a nine-story library known as Dharamganj, calling it a tragic loss for global knowledge. 'In two waves of invasion, first the Islamic invasion, and then British colonialism, India suffered a blow to its knowledge heritage. Bakhtiyar Khilji, around 1190, demonstrated cruelty and barbarity. He acted totally against any sense of civilizational ethos. And then, the books alone did not burn. He slit the throats of monks, smashed stupas, and razed the soul of India in his assessment not realizing that the soul of Bharat is indestructible,' he said.
'The fire raged for years. It swallowed 9 million, 90 lakh books and texts. Our history turned to cinders. Nalanda was much beyond a school of thought; it was a living, vibrant temple of knowledge for the benefit of the entire humanity,' Dhankhar added.
Vice President Dhankhar also urged for more dialogue and less confrontation in politics, warning against a rising political temperature in the country. 'Friends, there is a need for a change of national mindset also... We have picked up the habit of not making a difference but differing one with one another... There has to be Abhivyakti, there has to be Vaad-Vivad, there has to be expression, there has to be dialogue,' he said.
'We are too keen to raise the political temperature. Climate change is doing that for us. We all are concerned. Why should we melt the glaciers of our patience? Why should we act impatiently getting away from our civilisational, spiritual essence?' he asked.
He appealed to political leaders to focus on national interest and development, stating that 'India at the moment is the most aspirational nation in the world.'
Expressing concern over the commodification of education, Dhankhar stressed a return to India's Gurukul system. He said, 'There was a time when education and health were means by those who had enough resources to give back to the society... Our education must align with India's traditional Gurukul system.'
He called on corporates to use CSR funds to create world-class educational institutions: 'I appeal a mindset change with the corporates. India has been home to philanthropy. Pool your CSR resources to create by converging Institutes of global eminence as green field projects, much away from the concept of balance sheets.'
Dhankhar encouraged Pondicherry University alumni to contribute to the university's development. 'Let every alumni of this institute contribute to this fund. Boys and girls, the amount does not matter, the spirit matters,' he said.
He quoted astronaut Neil Armstrong, saying, 'A small step by him, a giant leap for humanity... So, for alumni, it may be a small step, but cumulatively, the results will be geometric.'
On India's linguistic diversity, the Vice President underlined it as a strength, not a divider. 'How can we be divided on languages?... Sanskrit is important globally, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Odia, Marathi, Pali, Prakrit, Bengali, and Assamese. I name these 11 because they are our classical languages,' he said.
'Our languages indicate inclusivity. Sanatan teaches us nothing but to be in togetherness for the same sublime purpose,' he added, appealing to the nation to rise above divisiveness.
Dhankhar urged everyone to reflect on India's achievements, stay grounded in its spiritual values, and unite for a better future. (ANI)

Punjab police register FIR against news channels for violation of EC guidelines on opinion poll publication

Chandigarh (Punjab) [India], June 18 (ANI): Punjab Police has registered an FIR against certain news channels for allegedly violating the Election Commission of India's (ECI) guidelines by publishing an opinion poll ahead of the June 19 Assembly by-elections in Ludhiana (West). The FIR was registered following a complaint filed by the Returning Officer of the 64-Ludhiana (West) Assembly Constituency, as per the Punjab's Public Relations Department. The police stated that the publication of the opinion poll during the 48-hour 'silence period' before polling is in direct violation of Section 126 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951 and Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. 'The publication of the poll was carried out in violation of the guidelines issued by the Election Commission of India, which prohibits the publication or broadcasting of opinion polls in electronic media during the restricted period (48 Hours prior to the close of the Poll),' the statement mentioned. According to the police, such publications are considered attempts to influence voter perception and manipulate the electoral environment. 'The complaint was formally lodged by the Returning Officer of 64-Ludhiana (West) Assembly Constituency. The publication of such a poll is viewed as an attempt to influence voter perception and election response, thereby undermining the integrity of the electoral process,' the statement added. The police further stated that strict action would be taken, as per law, against any individual or entity found guilty of violating the Election Commission's guidelines on the publication of opinion polls during the silent period. 'Strict action will be taken as per law against any individual or entity found guilty of violating the Election Commission's directives,' the statement read. Meanwhile, as campaigning concluded, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta visited Ludhiana to garner support for her party's candidate and urged voters to elect the leadership committed to 'service, good governance, and prosperity.' In a post on the social media platform X, Gupta wrote, 'Now Punjab needs - service, good governance and prosperity.' She further said that the people of Punjab were hoping for a safer and better future. 'The people of Punjab expect a safe, healthy and respectable life. They want better education, strong infrastructure, and complete freedom from the drug mafia.' (ANI) The by-elections to five assembly constituencies across the country are set to take place tomorrow. Punjab's Ludhiana (West) assembly constituency was necessitated after the death of Aam Aadmi Party MLA Gurpreet Bassi Gogi. The votes for all assembly bypolls will be counted on June 23. There are 14 candidates contesting in Ludhiana West, including Sanjeev Arora from AAP, Bharat Bhushan Ashu from Congress, Parupkar Singh Ghuman from Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), and Jiwan Gupta from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Apart from Ludhiana (West), Gujarat's Kadi (SC) and Visavadar, Kerala's Nilambur, and West Bengal's Kaliganj are also set to have bypolls. (ANI)

Trump to meet Pak COAS Asim Munir in Washington, experts say Iran on agenda

Washington, DC [US], June 18 (ANI): The White House on Tuesday confirmed a meeting between US President Donald Trump and Pakistan Chief of Army Staff Field Marshall Asim Munir for Wednesday. The meeting comes even as the US seeks to bring to an end the ongoing crisis in West Asia. South Asia analyst Michael Kugelman pointed out the significance of the meeting in a post on X. 'Senior US officials often engage with Pakistani Army Chiefs, but rarely is one hosted at the White House by the US President. One of many reasons why Munir's scheduled meeting with Trump is so significant, especially as his administration considers its options regarding the war in Iran,' he posted on X. 'For what it's worth, the scheduled Trump-Munir meeting shouldn't only be seen through the lens of the Israel-Iran war. There's been US-Pak engagement on critical minerals, crypto, and Counter Terrorism. Trump takes a deep personal interest in all of these. And Munir is empowered to talk about it all. Also, Kashmir,' he added. Derek J. Grossman, National Security and Indo-Pacific analyst, said, 'India, time to speak up! Trump this week is scheduled to meet at the White House with Pakistani Field Marshal Asim Munir, who New Delhi believes is the terrorist mastermind behind attacks on Indians.' The last Pakistani military leader to meet a sitting U.S. President was General Pervez Musharraf in 2001, who did so as the nation's head of state during his tenure as a military dictator. The Trump-Munir meeting comes after reports speculated on the possibility of Pakistan aiding Iran during its ongoing conflict with Israel. Asim Munir, in a public address in Washington, DC, had declared Pakistan's 'clear and strong' support for Iran in its war with Israel while also backing US efforts to de-escalate the situation. The Dawn reported that one of the most consequential developments during Munir's visit, however, has been Pakistan's strengthened counterterrorism partnership with the United States, particularly against the Islamic State Khorasan (IS-K) group. Earlier, overseas Pakistanis protested against Field Marshal Asim Munir outside an event at a hotel in Washington, DC. People shouted slogans 'Pakistanio ke Qatil' and 'Islamabad ke Qatil' while Munir was being welcomed at the event. While sharing the video of the protest on X, Pak Tehreek-e-Insaaf (Imran Khan's party) stated, 'Pakistani-Americans in Washington, DC are protesting outside the Four Seasons hotel, reminding General Asim Munir of the crimes he's committed against the people of Pakistan.' The video showed a screen which had Asim Munir's photo along with the message which read, 'Mass Murderer Asim Munir', 'Democracy dies when guns speak', and Asim Munir, your time is up. Pakistan will rise.' (ANI)

J-K: Indian Army begins pre-recruitment training for Territorial Army aspirants in Bhaderwah

Bhaderwah (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], June 18 (ANI): To empower local youth and prepare them for upcoming Territorial Army (TA) recruitment rallies, the Indian Army's 4 Rashtriya Rifles unit, based in Bhaderwah, has launched a pre-recruitment training programme in the Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir. The registration for the training session began in the morning at the Army camp in Sarna, Bhaderwah. The initiative is part of the Army's broader mission to empower and engage youth from remote areas of Jammu and Kashmir by preparing them for a career in the armed forces. The training aims to enhance the physical fitness, discipline, and overall readiness of participants to meet the rigorous demands of the recruitment process. The Army conducted screening and recruitment training for youth enrolment in the Indian Army at Bhaderwah. An Army official overseeing the training said, 'This programme is not only a pathway to employment for our youth but also a step toward strengthening national integration and channelising their energy in a positive direction.' 'The pre-recruitment training aimed to provide physical conditioning and written examination preparation for youth aspiring to join the Indian Army from remote areas of Doda District,' the officer added. Local youth have shown enthusiastic participation in the training, expressing gratitude for the Army's support. One participant stated, 'We are thankful to the Army for organising this training. It is giving us the confidence and skills needed to join the Territorial Army and serve the nation.' A large number of aspiring youths participated in the training session and appreciated the Army for such a great initiative. A candidate, Mohammad Rafi, said, 'We are very thankful to the Indian Army for providing this opportunity. This training helps us improve our stamina, discipline, and confidence to face the TA recruitment process.' Another candidate said, '2-3 days back, we were told that Army is conducting a rally related to free training here. We are here for training regarding running, pull-ups and push-ups. If we practise on our own at our home, I don't think we will be able to perform that well...' 'The Army knows about this better than we do. So, we have come here today. Right from my childhood, I wanted to join the Army. My grandfather had participated in the Kargil War. So, I have wanted to be here since childhood,' he added. (ANI)
