Police warn against sharing ‘misinformation' over death of Dundee scientist
Dr Fortune Gomo, 39, a mother who worked for Scottish Water, was allegedly attacked in Dundee just before 4.30pm on Saturday.
Detectives say they recognise the 'shock' in the local community and improving safety for women and girls is a 'priority'.
Dr Gomo died at the scene of the incident despite attempts to save her.
On Monday, Kyler Rattray, 20, appeared in private at Dundee Sheriff Court, facing a single charge of murder.
No plea was entered and he was remanded in custody.
Chief Superintendent Nicola Russell, Dundee local police commander, said detectives were 'confident that nobody else was involved and there is no wider threat to the public'.
She said senior officers had met with community leaders 'to provide reassurance and support', and that the murder had 'caused shock' in the city, urging the public not to share 'misinformation' on social media or to prejudice the court case.
Ms Russell said: 'The death of Fortune Gomo has caused shock in Dundee.
' Police Scotland is committed to having safer communities and senior officers have met with representatives from the local community to provide reassurance and support during this incredibly difficult time.
'Fortune's family and friends, who are being supported by specialist officers, are very much in our thoughts today, as is the wider community.
'A 20-year-old man was arrested shortly after this incident and has been charged in connection with Fortune's death.
'He appeared at Dundee Sheriff Court today and has been remanded in custody.
'Given that legal proceedings are now under way I am very limited in what I can say regarding the circumstances surrounding this incident, particularly any motive.
'Our inquiries are continuing and we are confident that nobody else was involved and there is no wider threat to the public.
'Working with partners to tackle violence and make Scotland's communities safe for all women and girls is a priority for Police Scotland.
'I am also acutely aware of misinformation being shared on social media and would urge the public not to speculate on the circumstances or post anything which could compromise a future court case and bring further distress to Fortune's family.
'We have increased our patrols in the area so you will see more officers out on the streets of Dundee. I would encourage anyone with any concerns at all to speak with those officers.
'I would also like to ask anyone who was in the South Road area of Dundee around 4.25pm on Saturday and who may have information to please come forward. You can contact us by calling 101 and quote incident number 2283 of July 5 2025.

More than 70 arrests at protests over Palestine Action ban
More than 70 people have been arrested at protests against Palestine Action being designated a proscribed terrorist group. Protesters gathered for the second week in a row in central London, where the Metropolitan Police made 42 arrests. Other demonstrations took place around the UK, including in Manchester, where police said 16 arrests were made, and in Cardiff, where South Wales Police arrested 12 people. In London, two groups of protesters gathered underneath statues of Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela in Parliament Square, shortly before 1pm. They wrote the message "I oppose genocide, I support Palestine Action" on pieces of cardboard and silently held the signs in the air as they were surrounded by police officers and members of the media. Some demonstrators could be seen lying on top of each other on the floor as police searched their bags, and took their ID cards and signs. Officers then carried away a number of protesters, lifting them off the ground and into waiting police vans. The last protester was lifted from the Nelson Mandela statue shortly after 2.30pm. Forty-one of the 42 arrests at the London protest were for showing support for a proscribed organisation, while one person was arrested for common assault, the Met Police said. Palestine Action's terror group designation means membership of, or support for, the group is a criminal offence punishable by up to 14 years in prison. Greater Manchester Police said it had arrested 16 people under the Terrorism Act 2000 after responding to a protest in St Peter's Square at around 2.30pm. South Wales Police confirmed 13 people were arrested on suspicion of offences under the same act in the vicinity of Central Square in Cardiff. The Met Police arrested 29 people at a similar protest last weekend. Scotland Yard has said its stance remains that officers will act where criminal offences, including support of proscribed groups or organisations, are committed. It added that this includes "chanting, wearing clothing or displaying articles such as flags, signs or logos". The move to ban Palestine Action came after at RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire last month.

Tragedy at Scottish beauty spot: Woman, 63, dies in front of 'distraught' crowd
A 63-year-old woman died in front of distraught onlookers yesterday at a Scots beauty spot. Emergency services raced to the Campsie Glen Waterfall Car Park, an area popular with swimmers and paddlers in the hills above Glasgow, after reports of a woman falling. The multi-agency response was attended by police, fire and ambulance crews, who sealed off the car park to attend to the incident. According to eyewitnesses, paramedics tried to resuscitate the woman in front of other day trippers who had arrived at the spot on the hottest day of the year. Last night it was unclear whether her death was related to the high temperatures in the area. One onlooker said: 'There was a lot of people crying at the scene. 'The police and ambulance service are there. 'I think a specialist climbing unit had also been there earlier.' Shocked visitors could be seen gathered near the falls, which are accessed via a footpath which rises around 200m. One witness said: 'There were at least seven police cars and officers were going around taking statements from people. They all looked distraught.' The car park is located just a few minutes from the town of Lennoxtown, in East Dunbartonshire, and operated by Forestry and Land Scotland. Recognising its attraction to visitors, the government agency website states: 'From the pretty village of Clachan of Campsie, with its historic church, wind along grassy slopes into the Campsie Glen. 'Wander along the path beside the Kirk Burn, or stop for a feed at one of the many picturesque picnic spots beneath the trees. 'For a more energetic outing, follow the path behind Clachan of Campsie that forks steeply uphill from the burn to reach a car park on the B822 with lovely views into the glen. 'From here you can choose a path around the hill to see waterfalls along the burn below or carry on climbing along a steep, rough trail to reach the ridge of the Campsie Fells above.' A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: 'Around 12.35pm on Saturday, 12 July, 2025, police received a report a 63-year-old woman had fallen near Campsie Glen Waterfall Car Park. 'Emergency services attended and the woman died at the scene. Her family is aware and enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances. 'Emergency services remain in attendance.' On the other side of the country, in East Lothian, a man's body was recovered from the River Tyne near Haddington just before noon. A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: 'Around 11.45am on Saturday, 12 July, 2025, police received a report a man's body had been found in the River Tyne, near Sidegate, Haddington. 'Emergency services are in attendance and enquiries are ongoing.' Again, it was unclear last night whether his death was weather-related.
