Fierce GMB row breaks out as Richard Madeley makes sudden admission
Richard Madeley revealed why he never went to uni during a tense debate on Thursday's Good Morning Britain.
The journalist, 69, has made a successful career out of his reporting and television hosting over the course of his life, but opted not to take on higher education when eh left school.
On A-Level results day, he and Charlotte Hawkins were in the hosting seats of the ITV programme and were joined by former politician Kwasi Kwarteng and Ava Santina-Evans for a chat about the life circumstances that may stop an individual from going on to university as they come to the end of their school years.
Ava said: "Yeah, are you gonna do better. I had an English teacher who pushed me to go, I wasn't going to go. I was the first person in my family to go. It crossed my mind but I hadn't really thought seriously about that teacher, my life would be different."
But Kwarteng brought about the notion that, these days, jobs aren't always readily available to graduates as he noted: "The underlying assumption is that if you go to university then you're gonna have a better life, and that isn't necessarily the case. A lot of people are going to university and finding that there aren't the jobs for them at the level as they expect, to me it's obvious that isn't the best way for everybody."
Ava accused him of looking at the whole thing from a 'fiscal perspective', he tried to deny it and she began to insist that was just what he said before arguing that 'taking three years out to have a bit of a laugh' should be the way forward.
Richard waded into the tense moment, where he explained that had he gone to university, it could have actually held him back as a journalist. He said: "Back in the 70s, I was indentured a junior cub reporter at 16 and when I was 19 when I qualified as a journalist. I'd have still been in my second year had I gone to university."
The former I'm A Celebrity star is famously married to his former This Morning co-host Judy Finnigan, and they have daughter Chloe together, who has become a television star in her own right having competed on Dancing On Ice and held other ventures within the media. But Richard revealed that she too did not think that university was right for her.
He added: "My own daughter left university after six months, it just wasn't for her, she came back from Leeds and she's made a great success of her life."
Richard has previously admitted that he was going to do English at university, but insisted that he has no regrets in going straight out to get a job. Last year on GMB, he said he was 'not sorry' about his decisions.
He added: "English. I was gonna do English. If I hadn't joined the local paper I was going to read English at uni and then get some sort of graduate placement at a newspaper. But I just jumped the queue by six years. I'm not sorry. I'm not sorry I didn't go."
At the time, fans on social media chimed in to air their own opinions, with one writing: 'This morning's revelation on GMB is that Richard Madeley and Trisha Goddard didn't go to university apparently!' Someone else chimed in: 'Degrees for the large part, are pointless. I would recommend going straight into work and study part time.
'The current system is largely there to support people who teach and those that lend money. It's labelled as not debt BUT it has a tangible impact on borrowing power.'
GMB airs weekdays from 6am on ITV1 and ITVX.

Maura Higgins' defiant stance as she's set for awkward Danny Jones run-in after kiss
Love Islander Maura Higgins and her I'm A Celebrity campmate Danny Jones stunned fans when they were spotted sharing a drunken kiss at a BRIT Awards afterparty earlier this year I'm A Celebrity campmates Maura Higgins and Danny Jones could be facing an awkward encounter at this year's National Television Awards, following their drunken kiss at a BRITs afterparty. Danny, 39, won the most recent series of ITV 's I'm A Celeb, and so will be showing up at the event - as will Maura. The video, which saw the two share a kiss, resulted in a dicey time for Danny's marriage to influencer and wife of 11 years, Georgia Horsley, 38. He has spent the year quietly attempting to repair their relationship after Georgia left the family home for a period of time to cool off. Danny and Georgia share their six-year-old son Cooper, and seem to have patched things up after what could have been a marriage-ending indiscretion on Danny's part. It comes after ITV makes major decision on I'm A Celebrity's future after talks with officials. While Danny attempted to win Georgia's trust back, Maura herself kept a low profile for a short time. Their National Television Awards appearance will be a test for Georgia, although a source points out they all knew their "paths were bound to cross at some point. Speaking to The Sun, they said: 'Danny is expected to attend the NTAs on September 10, as have all previous reigning jungle winners — and Maura is also going." The source added: 'There will have to be some clever choreography to ensure they don't end up next to each other when walking the red carpet, but they could both end up on stage if I'm A Celebrity wins. Maura won't be answering any questions about the kiss. She's put the incident behind her and feels she has nothing to be ashamed of." McFly star Danny has put on a united front with Georgia after the couple's testing year. The pair were all smiles as they attended the first of seven Wembley gigs for the Oasis reunion tour last month. Mum-of-one Georgia, 38, shared a black and white photo posted on her husband's Instagram Story. It showed her beaming as they made their way from Wembley Stadium. Danny was looking over at her as they shared a laugh between them, showing they've put their rocky patch behind them and have moved on. They were joined by Danny's mum, Kathy, who walked in between the pair in the candid snap. It's been a tough year for the couple, with the news of Danny's drunken BRITS kiss with Love Islander Maura sending shockwaves earlier this year. But lucky for Danny, it appears Georgia was willing to give their marriage another try, although the pair lay low on social media since the video surfaced in March this year. Meanwhile, Maura has been keeping herself busy with work, as well as buying her new house. The 34-year-old former Love Island contestant has earned an estimated £3.2 million in the years since she found fame on the ITV dating show back in 2019. And she has splashed the cash on a luxury new home - snapping up a five-bedroom property in the south east of England. The semi-detached house boasts an impressive garden and has huge, floor to ceiling windows that allow plenty of natural light to flood in.

Princess Andre, 18, teases drastic career change after reality TV success
Princess Andre has revealed her next career move following the breakout success of her documentary, The Princess Diaries. The 18-year-old has been making numerous headlines in recent weeks following the season finale of her hit ITV2 reality show. Earlier this week, Katie Price hit back at her ex-husband Peter Andre after he shared a blistering Instagram post in which he strongly criticised his ex-wife after reported comments about his children's welfare. Princess then responded to the drama, saying: 'I love my mum and dad and that's all that matters.' Now, however, the 18-year-old has opened up about a potential career change in an exciting development. Speaking to The Sun, she said: 'I want to be a successful businesswoman which I am actually heading towards at the moment. So hopefully in five years time, it will all be up there. 'I also want to get into music.' This comes after her father Peter shot to fame with his 1995 hit Mysterious Girl. Her brother Junior, 20, also shared his five-year plan, saying: 'Music, acting, business stuff, some clothing stuff, some fragrance stuff, just all of that stuff. 'We've got amazing things coming. Obviously the industry is very [up and down] but it's always about picking yourself up and getting back to it.' Katie and Peter first met on I'm A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here in 2004 and went on to have two children together – Princess, 18, and Junior, 20 – before separating in 2009. In her new ITV series, the show focuses on Princess's relationship with fame and carving out her own reputation beyond her celebrity parents. Princess also opened up about the difficulties she faced growing up with 'a lot on her plate'. The social media influencer, who has 782k followers on Instagram, shared what she went through after Katie and her ex-husband Kieran Hayler broke up in 2018 after five years together. She said: 'We got really close to him and loved him. He did a lot of stuff, and when they split up, everything kind of went downhill. My mum, obviously, being heartbroken, didn't deal with that the best way. 'She went through a very, very dark time, which was understandable. It was hard for me because I was around adulty things that kids should never see. More Trending 'I think, as well, when we needed our mum there, she wasn't emotionally able to be there because she had so much of her own problems going on.' This prompted Kieran to apologise to his former stepdaughter. The personal trainer, 38, said he regrets his multiple affairs that ended his marriage to Katie, which had a devastating impact on Princess's childhood. Loose Women faces another blow amidst ITV cuts and 'disappointing' change
The stars of Loose Women have reportedly been left 'disappointed' after they undergo a studio 'downgrade' after it was announced the show was being cut to 30 weeks It's been reported that the Loose Women stars have been hit by yet another blow, and it's claimed that the stars have been left 'disappointed' by their new studio. The show is currently filmed in London's White City but will soon move - with it being reported to be moved to The Hospital Club in Covent Garden. It was revealed that the show would only air for 30 weeks from 52. This is not the only blow, however, as the show will also be losing its studio audience. Reports have also suggested that some of the 26-strong panel could also be cut. Now, it's been reported that the new "broom cupboard" studio will be a third of the size of their old one, leaving the presenters hugely disappointed. It comes after one TV star admitted she sleeps in separate bed to partner as she fumes over pregnancy. "Cast and crew are crestfallen. It feels like a broom cupboard. It's going to be very cramped," a source told The Sun. "It feels like the show they've fought so long and hard to create is slowly being decimated. It's heartbreaking.' ITV also confirmed that there were no plans to change the show being broadcast across ITV1 and ITVX. Earlier this week, Janet Street Porter said the changes wouldn't affect her, although she was sad about the huge changes. "They won't really affect me because I work when I want to work," she shared with Woman Magazine. "I can see they need to save money, but from my point of view, I'm sad they've cut the episodes because Loose Women as a brand is doing extremely well for ITV. "Very well indeed. It's increased its audience share and it's loved by the audience," Janet, who has been part of the show for 11 year,s said. Alongside their daytime show, the Loose Women launched their own podcast in March this year, which was available every Tuesday and Friday on ITVX. The show featured a different duo from the show each episode, who opened up on a wide variety of topics. The podcast is said to do brilliantly on ITVX, with the hosts releasing 20 episodes in the first series. It was later announced that the show would be back for a second series later this summer.
