US Open 2025: Bernard Tomic takes tennis world by storm as he first round qualifying match at Flushing Meadow asAussie edges closer to ultimate redemption
Don't miss out on the headlines from Tennis. Followed categories will be added to My News. Bernard Tomic has taken the tennis world by storm as he moves towards playing his first US Open main draw since 2017 after taking down the 10th seed in the opening round of qualifying. The former world No. 17, who dropped as low as 835 and couldn't even get into ATP events, defeated American Patrick Kypson 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the second round, pocketing $41,800 in prizemoney in the process. Tomic has been powering through lower-tier events, making two finals, including one last weekend that he abandoned to take his place at Flushing Meadow. He's jumped to 169 on the rankings, which enabled him to try to get into the final grand slam of 2025. And the Aussie's call to forego ATP glory and the associated prizemoney to chase his US Open dream after the final in Barranquilla, Colombia was delayed due to rain, shows he has truly turned the corner. (Photo by Tim Clayton via Getty Images) Having once bragged about 'counting his millions' after a lacklustre performance in Australian Open qualifying in 2018 before dropping to 835 in the world in 2022, in the last two years, he has put in the hard yards, grinding on the ITF Tour. While in 2025 the Aussie has again started to compete on the ATP circuit and in a true showing that he is hungrier than ever to succeed, Tomic gave up the opportunity to end his seven-year ATP trophy drought to chase his dream of again playing on the biggest stage. And safe to say America at least is impressed with the resurgent Aussie. 'Tomic, who withdrew from the Barranquilla final when it was postponed and flew off to New York, beats Kypson 6-4 6-4. What a performance from Bernie, slice was useful for ten different things and slowed down pace to Pat's frustration, fantastic touch and disciplined ground game,' tennis podcaster Damien Kust wrote on X. 'Tomic looks like a new man,' another fan commented. Bernard Tomic at the Mallorca Open. Before Wimbledon, Tomic registered his first ATP tour win since 2021 at the Mallorca Open. In August, be broke back into the world's top 200, achieving his highest ranking since 2020. He's made two recent lower-level finals in Lexington, Kentucky and Barranquilla, Colombia to surge into the top 200 and get a shot of making the US Open main draw. Tomic will play Portugal's Henrique Rocha in the second round on Thursday. ‘Collarbone has gone': Max Verstappen's Daniel Ricciardo prophecy comes true
Don't miss out on the headlines from F1. Followed categories will be added to My News. Red Bull star Max Verstappen's magic appears to extend well beyond the F1 track, as a recently unearthed conversation with Daniel Ricciardo has proven. The former teammates were thick as thieves in the paddock and the affection has continued even after the Aussie was pushed into retirement. Fox Sports, available on Kayo Sports, is the only place to watch every practice, qualifying session and race in the 2025 FIA Formula One World Championship™ LIVE in 4K. New to Kayo? But the easily recognisable Aussie made headlines over the weekend after he was hospitalised due to a motorbike crash in Queensland while driving through the Daintree. He was reportedly taken to Mossman Hospital for treatment after suffering a collarbone injury — remember that. Despite the injury, he was reportedly 'in good spirits'. Photo byBut before he left the grid, everyone's favourite F1 personality shared a microphone with Verstappen in a joint interview with Channel 10's now-defunct The Project last season. Watch the video in the player above. 'Dan, you've got one perfect day with Max as your date. Where do you take him in Australia?' interviewer Georgie Tunny said. Ricciardo: 'Whoa, whoa! A friendly date? We're going to get the wrong idea …' Verstappen: 'Your farm? Let's go there.' Ricciardo: 'Yes, yes, yes. To my farm. And we would ride …' Verstappen: 'Break a leg …' Ricciardo: '[We would ride] Honda, little 110cc dirt bikes. That is what we'd be doing all day.' Verstappen: 'And then we call Red Bull and we're like: 'Argh, we just had a shunt. We can't do the next four races because Daniel's collarbone has gone!'' Ricciardo: 'No, don't say that!' That's some dark magic Verstappen is playing with … All jokes aside, Ricciardo has often been seen in downtime driving fast in any vehicle he can get his hands on and makes the most of his Western Australian ranch. It's one of several properties the 14-year F1 veteran owns around the world. The news of Ricciardo's injury comes after he opened up on his post-F1 life while headlining the Ray White's Connect conference recently. 'Well, I haven't been shaving my face. The beard is my comfort right now,' he told sports presenter Mel McLaughlin. 'I had a fallout with my barber and then I lost my razor. It's been a tough six months.' Daniel Ricciardo has gone a bit bushman since his F1 exit. Photo: The boys in 2024. Photo byHe then got serious, saying he realised his drive for F1 success made him somewhat 'selfish' and, since being axed from Red Bull, has been working hard to find himself and focus on what really matters in life. 'I've lived this crazy, high-speed life for so long, and I just sat into a little bit of stillness. I suddenly wasn't always surrounded by a tonne of people giving their opinions and thoughts,' Ricciardo continued. 'I've had a lot of time, I've done some hiking. I was in Alaska a few weeks ago and didn't get mauled by a grizzly which was a bonus. 'I've been trying to figure out who I am other than this race car driver. 'I've come to appreciate the little things more and the meaning of the importance of family and friends. 'I've always been driven, and that sometimes leads you to being selfish, so I'm trying to learn to be a bit more selfless and become a better listener.' OnlyFans model Shannon Rose to face Ash Heal in Sydney boxing event
Don't miss out on the headlines from Boxing/MMA. Followed categories will be added to My News. She's the Only Fans model fighting the daughter of a basketball legend, and Shannon Rose is aiming for the very top of the boxing world. Based on the Gold Coast, Rose fights Ash Heal – daughter of Shane Heal – on Wednesday night's pay-per-view show headlined by Nikita Tszyu's comeback against Lulzim Ismaili at the ICC Convention Theatre in Sydney. And she says it's the first step in her path towards boxing greatness. 'I want to go all the way to the top,' Rose told Code Sports. 'I didn't have an amateur career at all, so I've only had one fight so far. 'I'm a baby in the sport, but I want to go as far as I can.' OnlyFans model Shannon Rose successfully weighed in for her bout with Ash Head. Picture: No Limit Boxing/Gregg Porteous While she's aiming to reach the heights of women's boxing pioneers like Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano, Rose knows the pay in the lower rungs of the sport isn't great. Especially in women's boxing. So, she supplements any money she makes in boxing as a creator on OnlyFans. It's something other Aussie fighters like Ebanie Bridges and Cherneka Johnson have also done. 'Even though women's boxing is on the rise and we're gaining opportunities because of how well it's going, it's not paying enough to make it a full time career unless you're right at the top,' she said. 'Having that presence online means I'm able to be a fulltime athlete and have a flexible training schedule and pay the rent. 'My payday now in boxing is nowhere near as big as other women in the sport, but I'm getting a comfortable weekly wage online. 'But everyone that knows me knows I put the work into the boxing. I have that social media presence, but I don't let it affect me.' Rose originally started boxing for fitness and quickly fell in love with the sport, but her family has a long history of fighting. 'My late grandfather was a professional boxer in Belfast in Northern Ireland named Billy Stewart,' she said. 'He was fighting back in the 1940s and '50s, and he moved to Australia after his career finished. 'I just started boxing for fitness but soon realised it was something I could do to follow in his footsteps. 'He was my best friend as a kid, so having that connection is a real motivation. He'd be ringside at every single fight if he was still here. 'He passed away when I was eight or nine, and I have photos of him fighting, so it's a real connection that we have.' Rose moved from Coffs Harbour to the Gold Coast to train at the Opetaia Boxing Gym under Tapu Opetaia – the father of cruiserweight world champion Jai. Shannon Rose is ready for her fight with Ash Heal. Picture: No Limit Boxing 'She's tough, but she likes a challenge,' Tapu told Code Sports. 'In her first fight, they punched the shit out of each other. 'It's hard to find girls for sparring, so I have to throw her in with the boys for sparring. 'I tell 'em not to hold back, and they don't. But she has a crack back as well.' It's the perfect preparation for taking on Heal, who has had eight amateur fights, and will make her professional debut on Wednesday. 'It's been challenging, but it's good,' she said. 'I'm the only female in our fight team, so I have to keep up with the boys. 'Taps doesn't let them slack off either. If they slacken off he tells them to go harder, but it's been good. 'I want to get to the very top.' Originally published as OnlyFans model Shannon Rose set for bout with daughter of basketball legend Shane Heal
