EXCLUSIVE Sordid history of millionaire skipper Jeff Knight at the helm in fatal Clearwater ferry crash includes another boating disaster and groping female employee
The skipper of the boat that slammed into a packed ferry killing a 41-year-old husband is a wealthy local entertainment tycoon once accused of negligence in another boating accident, DailyMail.com can exclusively reveal.
Jeffry Knight, 62 – who has multiple venues in St Petersburg, Florida, and lives in a $5.2million waterfront mansion – was at the helm of the 37-foot triple-engine vessel when it hit the Clearwater Ferry on Sunday night.
Ten people among the 45 aboard the 40-foot ferry were injured in the 'mass casualty' horror as families were being shuttled on the final night of Clearwater's popular Sugar Sand Festival.
Knight's boat carrying six passengers left after the crash and was found more than three-miles south by law enforcement, who guided it on to a ramp beside the Belleair Causeway and led him away.
Authorities say Knight has cooperated with them and a breath test showed there was no trace of alcohol in his system. So far, he has not been charged with any offense.
However, DailyMail.com can reveal Knight has a lengthy and largely minor rap sheet that includes two DUIs and being accused of 'careless operation of a vessel'.
He is also currently facing a damning civil court case where he is accused of seriously sexually assaulting one of his female staff at his showpiece Jannus Live concert venue in St. Petersburg.
Additionally, Knight was previously accused in a lawsuit of the 2012 death of a friend who slipped as he was leaving his yacht, named Pure Knight Life, and hit his head on the way down into the water.
The ferry was badly damaged in the collision that killed one passenger. Knight, who has a lengthy rap sheet that includes two DUIs and being accused of 'careless operation of a vessel' was skipper of the other vessel
The family of James Young launched a civil action, alleging wrongful death on the basis that Knight's gangplank to the dock was 'inherently dangerous' because it didn't have a two-sided railing.
Officials said Young had cocaine in his system and his blood-alcohol level was three times the legal limit for driving in Florida.
Knight, who owns Jannus Live, the Ringside Café, the Pelican Pub, MacDinton's Irish Pub and Detroit Liquors, was first accused of DUI in April 2002, according to Pinellas County Circuit Court records. He pleaded no contest and was ordered to pay fines and costs of $650.
Five years later he was convicted of reckless driving, to which he pleaded guilty after accepting a reduced charge from another original DUI accusation.
And in 2012, he once more faced a DUI charge, again pleading no contest before being adjudicated guilty, according to records.
In 2017, he was accused of a maritime offense: being careless in the operation of a vessel. He pleaded no contest.
But he is currently facing serious sexual allegations by a former female employee in Pinellas County Circuit Court – with paperwork claiming he is a 'known sexual harasser'.
DailyMail.com is not naming the woman in the court documents due to the nature of the allegations.
Knight is facing serious sexual assault allegations from a former female bodyguard who worked at Jannus Live
She alleged that she was warned by a coworker to stay away from Knight. But at a concert in 2023, he allegedly attempted to make an advance towards her
She also alleged that during the exchange, he put her hands between her legs and rubbed his hand quickly before asking her to 'Uber home with me'
The female ex-security guard alleged the attack happened during a concert in June, 2023. Her attorney writes that she was warned by another staff member to 'walk away' if Knight approached her.
'After the concert, Knight comes up behind (the woman) He walks up close to her. He stares directly in her eyes,' says the amended complaint to the court.
It continues: 'Knight tells (the woman) "you're so damn pretty".
'Knight tells (the woman) that he bought "Jannus Live and the whole block". He says, "Not bad for someone who didn't finish 8th grade".'
Another security guard attempted to intervene in Knight's alleged advances, with the attorney writing: 'As Knight talks, Tracy Holden walks up… asks Knight, "Are you going to harass her now?" Knight touches or hugs Ms Holden and she walks away.'
The complaint says Knight comes closer to the woman put his hands on her face and says, "you're so beautiful" before leaning in and hanging on to her.
'Knight licks the side of her face,' it continues. 'Knight puts his hands on (the woman's) back and lowers his arm to her rear end. He thrusts his hands between her legs.
'Knight rubs his hand back and forth between (the woman's) legs. He does this quickly.'
The female employee then reportedly looked for a security guard to help her before Knight allegedly said: "Why don't you Uber home with me?"
Five days later, the woman went to the company's human resources department alleging Knight treated her like 'a piece of meat'.
According to the complaint, the female HR officer told her: 'I can speak with him, but it will mean nothing'. She also said Knight was probably drunk again and will not remember, says the filing.
The woman left her job of three months and is claiming constructive dismissal, sexual assault and battery, negligent supervision, sexual harassment and retaliation. She is suing for more than $50,000 and punitive damages. Her attorney wrote to court in January this year saying the case is ready for jury trial.
'A corporate owner such as Jeffry Knight may not touch, grab, rub, lick or sexually molest his employees,' her attorney writes.
In a motion to dismiss the complaint, Knight's attorney says the businessman 'had a conversation as evidenced by surveillance video.. this conversation was not sexual in nature'.
The former security guard made a draft complaint shortly after the alleged incident where she 'made several outrageous and extreme claims.. and what he allegedly did to her,' says the motion.
'Interestingly and tellingly, Plaintiff changed some of the more outrageous claims after she was provided a copy of the video.'
Knight lives in luxury at his palatial 12,000-square-foot pad complete with six bedrooms and eight bathrooms which he bought for $3million in 2017 – with a $2million loan, according to records.
The mansion, edging on to an exclusive stretch of water in an exclusive enclave in Largo, is now worth an estimated $5.2million.
During the pandemic, Knight went to war with the city of St. Petersburg in 2021 after he was cited 16 times for his businesses ignoring the mask mandate.
Officials on Monday named the man killed in the ferry horror as husband and father Jose Castro, 41, from nearby Palm Harbor, Florida.
Knight was identified as the operator of the center console boat in the tragedy by Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, which is investigating the crash.
Horrific video released by Clearwater Police shows the ferry traveling east of the channel near Memorial Causeway bridge and Knight's boat coming up at speed from behind in calm waters.
Chief Eric Gandy said at a news conference Monday: 'There's a point of impact where it looks to be that it overrode nearly three-quarters of the ferry.'
911 dispatchers heard 'horrific screaming' in the background minutes after the horror.
And harrowing audio released by the Coast Guard reveals a crew member's plea for help in a call with the words: 'Mayday, mayday, mayday. There's been a boat collision. The Clearwater Ferry, uh, underneath the Clearwater Memorial Causeway. The Clearwater Ferry is adrift.'
Passenger Marco Vacheco told 10 Tampa Bay: 'It was like a big yacht, It hit from behind, like it came through where the captain sits, like he was pinned down.'
His pregnant wife Brenda Alvarez told ABC Action News that she hadn't 'felt the baby move' since the crash and was heading to hospital to have it checked out.
Alvarez, on board with her husband and their two children, fell between two seats when the recreational boat slammed the ferry, which caused her 'whole body to hurt'.
Rob Shaw, spokesman for Clearwater police and the fire and rescue service, said: 'It was a chaotic scene when we got there. There were some patients being picked up by neighboring boats.
'Good Samaritans were trying to help. There were other patients who were walking ashore because of the shallow waters here off the bridge.'
Clearwater Ferry said in a statement: 'We are heartbroken for the person who lost their life, everyone who was hurt and their families.
'We deeply appreciate the dedication of the first responders and others who rushed to help Sunday night. We are cooperating with the investigation. Safety is the top priority for PSTA and the Clearwater Ferry.'

Edinburgh man said 'I'll hide ashes of dead child' after partner discovered dark secret
Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info A paedophile threatened to hide the ashes of his partner's dead child when she left him after finding out he was a child sex offender. Robert Knight made the despicable threat to dispose of the urn containing the remains of the child 'in a bush' after the woman had packed her bags and fled the family home. The victim moved away with her young son after 38-year-old Knight had been outed on social media as a pervert by a paedo hunter group in 2023. Knight also sent the woman death threats, texted an image of him holding a handgun and threatened to pour petrol through the door of a relative. Edinburgh Sheriff Court was told the pervert bombarded the terrified victim with texts, emails and social media messages on Snapchat and WhatsApp in an attempt to speak to her. The court was told Knight made 107 phone calls and sent 29 emails threatening her family members and demanding she give him money over a 48 hour period in August 2023. Knight also sent letters, turned up at the woman's new Edinburgh home and even left messages after hacking into her BBC iPlayer and Netflix accounts in a bid to contact her. Prosecutor Eilidh Grant read out a prepared written narrative on Tuesday, July 3, stating Knight had made numerous threats to harm the woman and her family including the vile threat to hide the ashes of her dead child. Ms Grant said: 'On February 23, 2023, the accused sent text messages which read 'Your family will pay. I (sic) make sure you have to move far away from your family for them causing this. 'If you don't call in five I gonna put [child's name] in a bush hidden in case you called the police you won't get him back. Hope your happy.' 'The reference to [the child] is a reference to [the woman's] son who had passed away several years prior and who's ashes she kept in her home with the accused. 'As a result of this comment she sought to end all contact with the accused. The following day she contacted police to report these various threats made by the accused.' Sign up for Edinburgh Live newsletters for more headlines straight to your inbox The court also heard Knight had deliberately driven his car at a male friend of the woman and knocked him over before shouting 'I'll come back and I'll you' at the terrified victim. Knight was arrested and appeared in court in September 2023 and after being released on bail he posted a picture of a black handgun to the family group chat before panicking and deleting the image. The thug, from South Queensferry, then sent a picture of him holding the gun to a relative and stated he 'had plans' for his ex-partner. He added: 'If I don't get to see my son, then she won't either. I'll plead guilty, I've nothing to lose.' Police were alerted to the threats and armed officers raided Knight's home where they found 'a black imitation handgun' during a search of the property on October 10, 2023. Knight appeared from custody at the capital's sheriff court for sentencing on Tuesday after previously pleading guilty to the offences. Sheriff Fergus Thomson jailed Knight for a total of three years and seven months and issued him with a 10 year non-harassment order that bans him from any contact with the victim. Knight was caught sending a series of disgusting sexual comments and images of his penis to who he believed was a 12-year-old girl in August last year. He was in fact in contact with an adult decoy from a paedo hunter group and was jailed for 340 days and placed on the sex offenders register indefinitely after pleading guilty in January this year.

Music icon, 85, sues sexual assault accusers for $500,000,000
Legendary Motown singer Smokey Robinson has filed legal documents in Los Angeles seeking $500million (£392m) in damages from four former employees who have accused him of sexual assault. The lawsuit, which follows civil allegations brought by the women, was reported by which claims to have reviewed the legal filings submitted by Robinson's legal team. According to the publication Robinson, 85, and his wife Frances assert in the court documents that they consistently treated their household staff with respect and generosity. In the filings, Robinson strongly denies all allegations of sexual misconduct and claims that the plaintiffs were treated as 'extended family.' The documents reportedly outline various acts of kindness and support the couple extended to the women during their employment, including gifts such as concert tickets, vehicles, financial help for dental emergencies, and more. As part of the defense, Robinson submitted evidence intended to demonstrate the friendly nature of his relationship with the plaintiffs. One example cited in the documents is his attendance at the graduation dinner of a plaintiff's child and the gifting of a vacation. The Daily Mail also reports that Robinson's legal team submitted text messages sent by the plaintiffs, including messages such as 'Love you,' 'Happy birthday… God bless you,' and invitations to personal events. The countersuit reportedly includes claims of defamation, intentional infliction of emotional distress, financial elder abuse, invasion of privacy, and civil conspiracy. Robinson is also asking the court to publicly identify the plaintiffs, arguing that media outlets have already begun reporting on the case, making anonymity impractical and unfair. As of now, no criminal charges have been reported, and the case remains a civil matter. The four former employees alleged repeated sexual assault and harassment at his Los Angeles-area home and other locations, including Las Vegas. The women, identified in the complaint as Jane Doe 1 through 4, also name Robinson's wife, Frances, as a defendant, accusing her of creating a hostile work environment and failing to intervene despite alleged prior knowledge of her husband's behavior. The plaintiffs are seeking a jury trial and at least $50 million in damages (approximately £40 million). In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, the couple's attorney, Christopher Frost, called the claims 'vile' and 'false,' describing the suit as 'an ugly method of trying to extract money.' He added that the defense plans to file a motion to dismiss based on inconsistencies and timeline issues in the complaint. According to the suit, the alleged assaults span from 2007 to 2024 and include claims of rape, sexual battery, false imprisonment, and failure to pay minimum wage. The women allege a pattern of predatory behavior and emotional abuse, claiming Robinson used his position to isolate and exploit them. More Trending The lawsuit also accuses Frances Robinson of verbal abuse and the use of 'ethnically pejorative language,' contributing to what the plaintiffs describe as a toxic work environment. A news conference addressing the lawsuit was scheduled for Tuesday in Los Angeles, according to Variety. Smokey Robinson, a central figure in the rise of Motown, is known for hits like Cruisin' and Tracks of My Tears, and has received numerous honors including a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and the National Medal of Arts. Diddy's $61.5M Beverly Hills mansion still unsold after 200 days... realtors explain mistake he is making
Sean ' Diddy ' Combs was right about that whole mo' money mo' problems thing. While Combs sits inside a Manhattan courtroom, facing off with his sexual abuse accusers at trial, his lavish Los Angeles mansion is sitting on the market. What was once his very own palace fit for a hip hop mogul has turned into a $61.5 million real estate headache that no one wants to touch — or even talk about — due to his now disgraced name. The embattled rapper had quietly listed the palatial Los Angeles estate for a staggering $61.5 million just one week before he was arrested in September 2024. Now, the 10-bedroom, 13-bathroom mansion seems to be tainted by his scandal and has sat on the market for over 200 days. When reached Kurt Rappaport, the listing agent for Combs' mansion, by telephone, he said he was unable to speak. 'Unfortunately, I have no comment. Nothing,' he said before hanging up. Another area real estate agent said: 'I wish I could help, but no agents want to touch that house or be in any stories related to the case or the listing.' Nestled in the glitzy enclave of Holmby Hills, the estate features a 35-seat movie theater, a disco ball-inspired statue, a pool with a waterfall grotto, and a traditional pizza oven. It also has perfectly manicured grounds, a guesthouse with a recording studio, a basketball court, and a fully decked out spa house. Combs' ex, singer Cassie Ventura, did testify in court that his LA home wasn't the scene of his infamous 'freak offs'— multi-day sex and drug-fueled parties now being revealed through witnesses in court — it's likely the public is doing little to separate the estate from the scandal. No potential buyers want to brag that they bought the disgraced producer's home. The Bad Boy Records founder also owns a Miami compound which law enforcement raided in March 2024, seizing 1,000 bottles of baby oil among other evidence. Combs bought the Mapleton Drive mansion in 2014 for $39 million and is refusing to budge on its price. In March, he pulled the sprawling property off the market, only for the listing to mysteriously reappear less than 12 hours later. Despite his mounting legal problems and massive legal fees, the home's Zillow listing still includes the original asking price. There was a lowball offer in 2024, when investor Steven 'Bo' Belmont (who flips scandal-tainted celebrity homes)offered $30 million for it. He promised he could remove the negative attention and turn the mansion into a gem. 'I want to remove the stigma and focus on the charming elegance of this remarkable property,' Belmont said in a statement at the time. Belmont previously bought another scandal-plagued star's home when he purchased Kanye West's crumbling Malibu pad for a $21 million. It had been listed for $53 million. Combs' mansion was once the scene of A-list parties, including an afterparty for the 2017 Grammys. Real estate experts had labeled the asking price is 'ridiculous' in light of the sex trafficking allegations against Diddy. Only a few people have even bothering touring the Southern California mansion, and no one has shown serious interest in a purchase. It's likely that Combs being in the current news cycle in a negative light will only hinder his ability to sell the home at a profit. Meanwhile, Combs has remained in a federal jail in Brooklyn since his trial started on on May 5. He has pleaded not guilty to charges that he coerced and abused women for years, aided by associates and employees. Prosecutors said that since at least 2008, Combs engaged in a racketeering conspiracy, using his power and prestige in the entertainment industry to force women into the aforementioned 'Freak Offs.' They said he used videos of the attacks as collateral to threaten victims, and they said he also physically assaulted women and others by striking, punching, dragging and kicking them. Combs has pleaded not guilty to the charges that he coerced and abused women for years, aided by associates and employees. On Monday, incendiary images were shown in Combs' trial that reveal the disgraced rap mogul was preparing for a hotel 'freak off' despite knowing he was about to be arrested, prosecutors say.
