Motherwell appoint new boss after 'rigorous process' to name Michael Wimmer's successor

Jens Berthel Askou will take up the reins at Fir Park next week
Motherwell have appointed former Copenhagen assistant manager Jens Berthel Askou as their new boss.
The 42-year-old Dane will formally begin his role at the club next week, subject to the approval of a work permit, as he replaces Michael Wimmer.

A former Norwich City defender, Askou played under former Motherwell hero Paul Lambert, and is an ex-team mate of new Rangers boss Russell Martin.

Askou started coaching in Denmark in 2015, and was with several clubs in his homeland before moving to HB Torshavn in the Faroe Islands in 2019, where he won the league and League Cup, earning him manager of the season.
Spells at AC Horsens in Denmark in 2021, and at IFK Gotenborg in 2023 followed, and he helped lead Sparta Praha to the Champions League as assistant boss.
In January 2025 he joined FC Kobenhavn as assistant manager, winning the league and cup, and reaching the Europa Conference League knockout stages.
He told the club's website: 'This is a really proud moment for me. It's a huge honour to be selected to become the manager of Motherwell Football Club.
'Having spoken extensively with members of the club board, it was clear from the outset that our ideas, ambitions and morals align.

'We are all ambitious people, and we're all hungry for success. I can't wait to arrive in Scotland and begin planning for the season ahead. There is a lot of work to be done, but it's highly exciting.'
Chairman Kyrk Macmillan said: 'This has been a more rigorous process to recruit our new manager due to the incredible number of applications for the role.
'We had a high number of impressive applicants, but we were really drawn to Jens.

'His track record of working with big clubs, delivering success and developing young players matches up with all our philosophies here at Motherwell Football Club.
'He has handed 26 teenagers debuts in five-and-a-half seasons, which I think is evidence of Jens implementing his ideas and morals.
'The data and numbers impressed us, but more importantly, after speaking with Jens a number of times, he is a really ambitious character and a leader who was extremely keen to get the role here at our club.
'We expect the UK work permit to be received in the coming days, and then he can commence his work on Day 1 of pre-season.'

Callum McGregor took fears over yobs directly to Celtic board as SFA chief makes weighty plea to players

The SFA chief admits his voice or Neil Doncaster's won't cut through but Premiership stars sharing their fears holds more power Ian Maxwell has called on the country's top players to help clean up the 'unacceptable' increase in fan misbehaviour across Scottish football. The SFA chief has revealed Callum McGregor had approached the Celtic board with concerns over missiles being thrown onto the park two years ago. ‌ And Maxwell reckons more players speaking out directly to the culprits would have a far greater effect than the blazers themselves enforcing the rules. ‌ Hampden beaks last week updated their regulations to bring them into line with the SPFL and allow them to fine clubs, reduce ticket allocations or even throw them out the Scottish Cup for disorder in the stands. The past season has seen multiple incidents of pyrotechnics and fireworks, missiles and pitch invasions. The worst case saw former Aberdeen defender Jack MacKenzie struck on the head and injured by a chair thrown by his own fans in the defeat at Dundee United on the last day of the season. And recalling an incident from 2023, Maxwell said: ' Rangers played Celtic at Hampden and there was a lot of fireworks. 'There was a video online and a guy had a rocket. They are finding ingenious ways to get these things into grounds. 'I spoke to the Celtic board after it and one of them said Callum McGregor had gone to them and said that was the first time the players had actually talked about something coming onto the pitch. ‌ 'At that point you go.. I think we need to use the players. 'The players are a fundamental part of trying to impact on that behaviour because with the best will in the world myself or Neil Doncaster or someone else saying 'gonna not do that' just makes people want to do it. 'But if players are going to supporters and saying 'you are affecting our performance, you are getting in our heads, I'm worried when I'm taking a corner' then that is na positive message. ‌ 'The more we can use that player platform to spread that message and make people aware of the danger then the better. 'It's a player's place of work and it's not right they are taking a corner and there's all sorts raining down beside them.' Both sides of the Old Firm have been hit by ticket reductions from the SPFL for their next League Cup match at Hampden after their fans continually flouted rules over pyrotechnics last season. ‌ Motherwell were also hit with a suspended sanction. It comes after the League Cup semi final kick offs were delayed due to smoke billowing round the national stadium. Celtic were also sweating on an away fan ban ahead of their Champions League blockbuster against Bayern Munich in Germany after being hit with a number of fines by UEFA. But there were instances of fan disorder across the country and Maxwell said: 'Towards the end of last season we saw more and more and it's unacceptable. ‌ 'We need to eradicate it. 'We approved a rule change at our AGM through the week from a cup competition perspective which brings them more in line with SPFL rules. 'The nuance to this is in a league match the SPFL deal with incidents of crowd behaviour and we deal with on-field stuff. If it's a cup competition it all sits under our jurisdiction. ‌ 'So we will deal with incidents of crowd behaviour and it's important that both governing bodies are dealing with those things exactly the same.' But Maxwell believes the country's law makers can do more to help crack down on the hooligans too. ‌ He added: 'If someone is going to go into a stadium and throw a seat what can we do about that? It's a criminal act by an absolute idiot. 'The first thing we need to do is identify individuals, that involves police, stewards inside the stadium, then once we've done that are we taking action as the football authority? But there's also the criminal element and they need to go through that. 'The banning order legislation needs to be changed to have some sort of consequence or people will just continue to do what they do. Asked if points deductions would be the next step, Maxwell, speaking on BBC Sportsound, added: 'The ticket reduction is the next step. It's a fundament step. 'We will see how that goes. Hopefully that has the impact. If it doesn't and we need to look at something else, we will see what the options are at that point.'

Thomas Frank gives green light to first Tottenham transfer with £30m deal close

Thomas Frank was named as Tottenham Hotspur's new head coach earlier this week and the first signing of the Dane's tenure is close to being agreed after fresh transfer talks Mathys Tel is poised to become the first signing of the Thomas Frank era at Tottenham, with the Frenchman in advanced talks to make his loan move from Bayern Munich permanent. Tel, 20, joined Spurs on loan in the January transfer window in a deal with an option for €50million (£42.5m). The versatile forward scored three times in 20 appearances, though the manager who signed him, Ange Postecoglou, is no longer at the helm. ‌ Tottenham's decision to replace the Australian with Frank has had no bearing on a permanent move, though, with the club and Bayern now close to an agreement. ‌ As outlined by Sky Sport Germany, Tottenham are set to pay around €35m (£30m) to keep Tel after negotiating fresh terms with the German giants, with Frank keen on retaining the forward's services. And it's claimed that the France Under-21 star is also happy to make the switch permanent after getting a taste of life in the Premier League over the last six months. Max Eberl, the Bayern sporting director, confirmed that talks over a deal were ongoing with Tottenham earlier this week amid talk that an agreement was close. "Mathys was at Tottenham for six months. He wanted to play in the U21 European championship with France, and we allowed him to," he said, per Abendzeitung München. "We're talking to Tottenham, that's no secret. We'll see how that pans out." Frank is expected to be backed in the transfer market after signing a three-year contract to become the club's new head coach with more additions likely. ‌ Mirror Football revealed that the Dane would love to take Bryan Mbeumo with him to Tottenham despite interest in the Cameroon international from Manchester United. Spurs have since launched a £70m bid - consisting of £65m with a further £5m in add-ons - in a bid to gazump United, though it's understood that Old Trafford remains Mbeumo's preferred destination. ‌ Spurs have also been linked with Yoane Wissa after prising Frank away from Brentford. The DR Congo and Mbeumo racked up 38 Premier League goals between them for the Bees last season and would instantly boost Tottenham's firepower. Bournemouth's Antoine Semenyo is also of interest to Spurs; the Ghana international has other top-flight suitors including Manchester United and is said to be valued by the Cherries at around £70m.
