Danish champions flex their muscles

KUALA LUMPUR: Defending Malaysia Masters men's doubles champions Kim Astrup-Anders Skaarup Rasmussen of Denmark advanced to the second round with a straight-games win over China's world No. 29 Xie Hao Nan-Zeng Wei Han today.
The world No. 1 defeated the Chinese duo 21-10, 21-17 in just 35 minutes at Axiata Arena.
Last year, Astrup- Rasmussen captured three other crowns — the World Tour Finals, Canada Open, and European Championships.
However, the current season has seen them suffer a rocky start, with three early exits. Their best result so far was a quarter-final finish at the European Championships.
Rasmussen said:
"We played at what I'd call our level against Hao Nan-Wei Han.
"Our focus was good, and we stuck to our game plan and tried to control the match on our terms — that's always our goal.
Astrup-Rasmussen will face Malaysia's world No. 39 Low Hang Yee-Ng Eng Cheong in the second round.
Earlier, Hang Yee-Eng Cheong beat Taiwan's world No. 70 Chiang Chien Wei-Wu Hsuan Yi 21-14, 21-16.

Top pairs could still be included in SEA Games team

Malaysia men's doubles shuttlers Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik in action against South Korea's Kim Young-hyuk-Wang Chan during the first round of Malaysian Masters at Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil on Wednesday. — IZZRAFIQ ALIAS/The Star PETALING JAYA: National doubles pairs Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah and Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei remain in the Badminton Association of Malaysia's (BAM) plans for the SEA Games in Thailand this December. National doubles coaching director Rexy Mainaky said BAM have yet to finalise the 20-player list for the biennial multi-sport event following a selection committee meeting with the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) in Kuala Lumpur yesterday. BAM have requested a one-week extension before submitting the final list to OCM, citing concerns that main rivals Thailand and Indonesia may also field strong pairs in their bid for gold. 'Thailand will be sending their strongest squad, and I understand Kunlavut (Vitidsarn) will also be competing,' said Rexy. 'We still need to discuss further, including with the singles camp led by Kenneth (Jonassen) and other coaches such as Herry (Iman Pierngadi) for the men's doubles. 'We are among the top three contenders. If Thailand and Indonesia send their strongest teams, we will do the same. If not, we will at least send a line-up capable of mounting a strong challenge. He also dismissed concerns of a scheduling clash between the SEA Games and the BWF World Tour Finals in Hangzhou, China. The badminton competition at the SEA Games will take place from Dec 8 to 14, while the World Tour Finals are scheduled for Dec 17 to 21. Earlier, Aaron expressed his intention to make way for other pairs such as world No. 7 Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun or the in-form Wan Arif Wan Junaidi-Yap Roy King, who recently won the Macau Open, to compete in Thailand. Aaron and Wooi Yik previously won the men's doubles gold medal at the 2019 SEA Games in Manila, the Philippines. Rexy said while he respected Aaron's view, a thorough discussion must be held before making any decision. 'It doesn't mean I don't support what Aaron said. I respect it, but there are many factors to consider and matters that require detailed discussion. ''We value the players' opinions, and in men's doubles, we have several other strong combinations,' he added.

BAM to finalise SEA Games badminton squad by next week

THE Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) will finalise its squad for the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand within the next week. The announcement will come before the national team departs for the 2025 World Championships in Paris, scheduled from August 25 to 31. BAM doubles coaching director Rexy Mainaky stated that discussions with all doubles coaches are ongoing to determine the best combinations. 'Give us a few more days, maybe a week, before we announce the final decision. The SEA Games does not clash with the World Tour Finals,' he said. He added that further discussions are needed to ensure Malaysia fields a competitive team against strong opponents like Indonesia and Thailand. Rexy spoke after the Thailand SEA Games selection meeting at Wisma OCM today. He confirmed that top pairs such as Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah, and Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei are likely to be selected. However, he stressed that no final decisions have been made yet. 'We appreciate comments from players such as Aaron-Wooi Yik, who wish to give young players an opportunity,' Rexy said. He highlighted the depth in Malaysia's doubles events, mentioning pairs like Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun, Wan Arif Junaidi-Yap Roy King, and Choong Hon Jian-Muhammad Haikal Nazri. The final squad is expected to include 20 players, with 10 men and 10 women. The 2025 SEA Games will take place from December 9 to 20 in Thailand. - Bernama

Nova wants Tang Jie-Ee Wei to end long wait for mixed doubles medal in World Champs

PETALING JAYA: Mixed doubles coach Nova Widianto has called on shuttlers Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei to end Malaysia's 19-year wait for a medal in the mixed doubles in the World Championships. Koo Kien Keat-Wong Pei Tty, who captured bronze in the 2006 edition in Madrid, have been the country's sole medallists in the mixed doubles in the world meet so far. Nova has set Tang Jie-Ee Wei a minimum target of reaching the last four in the tournament this time from Aug 25-31 in Paris, which will guarantee the duo at least a bronze. The Indonesian believes that his charges have a genuine chance of making the semi-finals as they will be seeded fourth in the prestigious event. "Looking at Tang Jie-Ee Wei's seeding, they should at least reach the semi-finals and win a medal. "Luck has not been good for Malaysia in the mixed doubles in the World Championships. "Hopefully this time we can deliver better results," said Nova after overseeing a training session at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) in Bukit Kiara on Tuesday (Aug 12). Tang Jie-Ee Wei's status as fourth seeds will see them avoid China's top two seeds Feng Yanzhe-Huang Dongping and Jiang Zhenbang-Wei Yaxin as well as Thailand's third seeds Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Supissara Paewsampran at least until the semi-finals. The draw for the world meet will be released on Wednesday (Aug 13). Nova hopes Tang Jie-Ee Wei, who have had an unsatisfactory year so far, can rise to the occasion and prove their mettle. The world No. 4 pair have not reached a final since finishing runners-up in the World Tour Finals in Hangzhou last December. Tang Jie-Ee Wei were stopped in the semi-finals five times in the Opens in Malaysia, India, Indonesia, Japan and Macau.
