Azhad put on 10kg only to blaze muaythai trail

KUCHING (Aug 6): Azhad Haziq Syafaat Abdul Khalid carved his name into the local muaythai history by clinching the 80kg title at the National Combat Sports Championships (Pre-Sukma) & Muaythai National Grand Prix 2025 at Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur from July 24-27.
The 20-year-old from Petra Jaya displayed grit to overcome Iqmal Arif of Singapore's Gorilla Boxing Club in a fiercely contested final. It earned Azhad the coveted National Championship Belt and made him the first Sarawakian to claim the top national ranking in the 75-80kg weight class.
What made the feat even more remarkable was that Azhad wasn't even fighting in his natural weight class.
'This was an entirely new challenge for me,' Azhad told reporters during the thanksgiving and celebration dinner hosted by Sarawak State Muaythai Association president Jumaat Ibrahim at a local restaurant last Saturday.
'I usually compete in the 70kg category. To step into the 75–80kg bracket, I had to put on almost 10kg. It was my first time fighting opponents this size and it wasn't easy.'
Yet, under the bright lights and roaring crowd, Azhad dug deep to uncover the discipline, composure and heart to power his way to glory.
The Politeknik Kuching student saw the victory not just as a title but also a stepping stone to greater heights.
'This win motivates me to push myself further. I know I still have room to grow and I want to keep improving with every fight,' he said.
'While this win is special, my real focus will be to remain in the 70kg division where I feel most at home. That's where I'll continue to chase my dreams,' he added. Azhad Haziq Syafaat Abdul Khalid

Kelantan to be last SUKMA host under current rotation model

THE Youth and Sports Ministry (KBS) is reviewing plans to make Kelantan the last state to host the Malaysia Games (SUKMA) under the current rotation system. Minister Hannah Yeoh stated that future hosting rights may shift to Putrajaya or the National Sports Council (NSC) to maintain consistency in contested sports. She explained that the existing model allows host states to prioritise sports offering medal advantages, leading to frequent event exclusions. 'After Kelantan, the cycle where all states have hosted the Games will be complete,' she said during the Olympic House groundbreaking ceremony in Bukit Jalil. Hannah urged stakeholders to respect Selangor's decisions as the 2026 SUKMA host regarding event selections. She emphasised the need for continuity in athlete development through structured planning. The minister also welcomed the construction of the Olympic House, set for completion in 2028. 'It is a significant milestone that signals the beginning of an exciting new chapter in Malaysian sports journey,' she added. - Bernama

Yeoh: Don't racialise decision to leave out silambam from Sukma

KUALA LUMPUR: Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh has urged the public not to racialise the exclusion of silambam from the 2026 Malaysia Games (Sukma). This, she said, was as host states have always had the autonomy to select the sports they wish to feature, and Selangor was simply exercising that right. "In every edition of Sukma, the host state is free to choose the sports they want. Selangor is no different," Free Malaysia Today reported her as saying. Yeoh acknowledged the disappointment over silambam being left out, but stressed that other sports such as muay thai had also not been selected, without stirring similar racial sentiments. "What we can do at the National Sports Council (NSC) is to look into organising non-Sukma competitions. But let's not racialise the issue when we talk about sports," she said. Her remarks follow criticism by PKR Youth arts and culture executive committee member Gopiraj Nair, who called the exclusion of silambam a dismissal of Malaysia's legacy sports. He had also rejected the notion that Indian representation in other sports like kabaddi and karate was sufficient, pointing out silambam's strong grassroots following in the country. On Tuesday, Yeoh had announced that e-sports, chess, cricket and kabaddi would be among the additional sports for Sukma 2026, on top of 30 mandatory disciplines. Boxing and softball were also confirmed as compulsory sports beginning that year. With the four additions, a total of 34 sports will be contested at the Selangor-hosted edition, Yeoh had said, adding that the decision was final and no further appeals would be considered. Yeoh also revealed that the government is studying a possible shift in Sukma's format to allow for greater consistency in athlete development. "After Kelantan hosts Sukma following Selangor, the full cycle of state hosts will be completed. "We're looking into the option of having Putrajaya or the NSC as the permanent host. This will help ensure continuity and fairness in the selection of sports," she said.

Arteta slams ‘naive' Arsenal after going down to Villarreal

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta blasted his side's defending after the loss to Villarreal. (EPA Images pic) LONDON : Arsenal were naive in their defending and paid a painful price, manager Mikel Arteta said after his side's 3-2 friendly defeat against Villarreal left them with back-to-back pre-season losses. Arsenal, who started their preparations for the new season with victories over AC Milan and Newcastle United before losing to London rivals Tottenham Hotspur, found themselves trailing 2-0 inside 33 minutes against Spanish side Villarreal at the Emirates yesterday. 'Today I think the result is painful. I think they were super efficient but we've been naive, especially the way we have defended in open spaces and that's something that, especially the way we play, we have to absolutely nail,' Arteta told reporters. 'Today we haven't been good at all in that department and that has cost us the game for sure.' Arteta, however, was pleased with what he saw from striker Viktor Gyokeres, who completed his €63.5 million switch from Sporting last month, after handing the 27-year-old Swede his first start in an Arsenal shirt. 'I think it was very important for him to start a match and start to have the feeling and the connection with the team,' Arteta said. 'He's been with us only a week or so, but I really saw a lot of things and a lot of purpose, especially the way he was attacking certain spaces.' Arteta also heaped praise on highly rated 15-year-old attacking midfielder Max Dowman, who won a penalty for Arsenal. 'He continues to impress, without a doubt. The impact he had in the game again today, the efficiency that he shows in every attack and action, it's incredible,' the Spaniard added.
