The World Health Organisation defines self-care as, 'the ability of individuals, families and communities to promote health, prevent disease, maintain health, and cope with illness and disability with or without the support of a health worker.'
Research from the Global Self-Care Federation shows that self-care practices – especially the responsible use of over-the-counter (OTC) medicines – can save health systems $4.75 billion annually and free up 1.8 billion physician hours. For many communities with limited access to formal healthcare, OTC remedies serve as vital first-line interventions.
Whether it's easing flu symptoms, boosting immunity with vitamins, or soothing a headache, self-care tools allow people to act early – preventing complications and preserving healthcare capacity.
A season high on health-risks
This year, the influenza season arrived early than expected, according to the National Institute of Communicable Diseases. Hospitals saw a rise of cases as early as March. Meanwhile the RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) season – which began in March – saw a rise in cases in children under the age of 5 in April, with cases peaking in early May.
While these infections are typically mild, they can lead to severe complications in vulnerable populations. Beyond the respiratory infections, winter is also known bring on a change in mood or rather, seasonal affective disorder (SAD), marking a significant impact on many South African's mental health. For the 30% of South Africans living with mental health illnesses, this period requires a concentrated focus on self-care, not as a mere nice-to-have, but rather, as an essential.
This is where self-care steps in – not as a luxury, but as a fundamental part of health resilience.
Respiratory Health: Quick Action Matters
Infections like flu and RSV spread quickly in winter, but early treatment can make a significant difference. OTC medications can reduce symptom severity, prevent complications, and get people back on their feet faster – especially in remote or underserved areas.

Global animal welfare organisation FOUR PAWS is appealing to South Africans to switch from cow's milk to plant-based milk alternatives amid growing concerns over the environmental and ethical impact of dairy farming. Ahead of World Plant Milk Day on 22 August, FOUR PAWS highlighted that dairy production in South Africa and around the world contributes significantly to climate change, deforestation, and animal suffering. Cows in industrial dairy systems are repeatedly impregnated, separated from their calves, and often live in confined conditions to maximise milk production. The organisation believes plant-based milks present an easy, affordable and compassionate solution. 'South Africans are already embracing meat-free Mondays, flexitarian diets and conscious living,' said Fiona Miles, Director of FOUR PAWS South Africa. 'Swapping dairy milk for oat, soy or almond milk in your morning rooibos, cereal or smoothie is a simple step with powerful impact, for your health, for the planet, and for animals.' According to the Planetary Health Diet, developed by global scientists to balance human and environmental health, the world should consume no more than 15.7 kg of meat per person per year. However, we surpassed that limit globally by 19 June 2025, now dubbed Meat Exhaustion Day. While South Africa's average meat and dairy consumption remains lower than the Global North, our dietary trends are moving in the wrong direction. 'We must protect the healthier, more plant-forward traditions in many South African communities,' says Miles. Three Operation Dudula women in court over ID demands at Soweto clinic

The incident took place on Thursday at the Lilian Ngoyi Clinic in Diepkloof, Soweto. The women, aged between 49 and 60, reportedly entered the maternity ward and disrupted services by questioning patients and demanding to see their identity documents. Police were called to the scene after the suspects were locked inside one of the labour wards, where both staff and patients felt their rights had been violated. Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo said the women were arrested and charged with contravention of the National Health Act and public violence, among other offences. Operation Dudula, an anti-migrant group, launched a nationwide campaign in June aimed at preventing undocumented foreign nationals from accessing healthcare services at public facilities. The group has been blocking foreign nationals from receiving treatment across Gauteng, claiming public healthcare should be reserved for South African citizens only. They argue the country's healthcare system is overburdened and cannot support undocumented immigrants. The group's actions have drawn sharp criticism from government officials and human rights organisations, while some community members have expressed support. In a separate incident in Booysens, two suspects were arrested after allegedly assaulting a man at a local clinic. 'It is alleged that on Monday, August 4, the victim was queuing for treatment when a woman approached him and demanded to see his ID or passport,' said Masondo. 'When he could not produce the documents, she called two accomplices who then assaulted the man and forced him to leave the facility.' The victim later reported the incident to the Booysens Police Station. Two suspects were arrested and charged with contravention of the National Health Act and common assault.
