NASCAR's Cup Series to debut In-Season Challenge as $1 million backdrop to points race for title
HAMPTON, Ga. (AP) — The debut of NASCAR's In-Season Challenge in Saturday night's Cup Series race in Atlanta generated differing opinions and expectations from drivers.
After all, there's a points race to attend to. Every team's top priority is qualifying for the playoffs and trying to win the championship. Some drivers acknowledge they simply haven't paid attention to the new race within the race.
Joey Logano says he sees no reason to view the new tournament as a distraction.
'If there's something to win, you want to go win it,' Logano said Friday.
Denny Hamlin is the No. 1 seed in the 32-driver In-Season Challenge, a five-race, bracket-style tournament. Chase Briscoe, who held off Hamlin for his first win for Joe Gibbs Racing last week at Pocono Raceway, is the No. 2 seed. A $1 million prize awaits the winner as part of a new media rights deal that includes TNT.
Briscoe said Friday he felt 'definitely a sigh of relief, you know, just a weight off your shoulders' following last week's win. He said that sense of relief was shortlived.
'I'm expected to win multiple races, not just one,' Briscoe said. 'It's a sense of relief, but also more pressure because now they know you can win.'
NASCAR hopes the tournament generates mid-season interest. The single-elimination format cuts the field to 16 at Chicago, eight at Sonoma, four at Dover and the final two at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Many drivers expect their interest in the tournament will increase after Saturday night's race.
'I think some of the drivers have been kind of dismissive over the bracket challenge,' said Brad Keselowski, who enters the race No. 30 in the points standings and in need of a win in Atlanta to earn a playoff spot in his RFK Racing Ford.
'I think it'll become a lot more real, whether it be for the drivers or for the media or the fans, as it progresses into the later rounds over the next few weeks,' Keselowski said.
Added Ricky Stenhouse, who is 24th in the points race, of the new tournament: 'It's cool. I think after this weekend you'll have a little better idea of what you have. Our main goal in Atlanta is winning and getting into the playoffs.'
Drawing 'Uncle' Noah
Briscoe is facing No. 31 seed Noah Gragson in the first bracket. He says it's a difficult matchup, in part because 'he's actually probably my best friend on the circuit … and my son's favorite driver.'
Briscoe said his 3-year-old son, Brooks, thinks of Gragson 'like that uncle that just you take your kid to, and he has Pop-Tarts and ice cream and everything else when he's with them.'
Added Briscoe: 'Hopefully I'll win. If not I'll never here the end of it from Noah or my son.'
Briscoe posted a photo on his X account of his son's bracket. The photo shows the smiling Brooks holding a bracket with his father's No. 19 winning every round of the tournament.
Racing for Rhealynn
Chase Elliott has a special paint scheme on his No. 9 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet that was designed by 11-year-old cancer patient Rhealynn Mills. Elliott chose Mills' design to highlight his foundation's efforts to raise money for Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.
Elliott said the 'Design to Drive' program has raised $500,000 for the children's hospital.
'The only bad thing is I feel like we've crashed every time we've done it,' Elliott said, adding his sponsor, NAPA Auto Parts, deserved credit 'for giving up the car' so the paint scheme could instead feature Mills' design.
New name for Atlanta track
EchoPark Speedway is the new name for the track that was still known as Atlanta Motor Speedway in February when Christopher Bell won while leading only the final lap in overtime. It's the home track for Elliott, from Dawsonville, Georgia, and he acknowledged seeing the name change and the new green paint 'was different for me. I think it's fine.'
Odds and ends
Ryan Blaney is the favorite (+800) to win the race, per BetMGM Sportsbook. Joey Logano and Austin Cindric, each at +1000, were next.

CINCINNATI (AP) — Cincinnati Reds right-hander Nick Martinez has a no-hitter through six innings of Friday night's game against the San Diego Padres. The 34-year-old Martinez has walked one and struck out three. He has thrown 81 pitches thru six innings, 54 for strikes. Martinez's season high for pitches is 102 and his career high is 112. The last no-hitter thrown against the Padres came on Aug. 14, 2001, when Diamondbacks left-hander Tyler Gilbert held them hitless in his first MLB start. Martinez is trying to record the 18th no-hitter by a Reds pitcher and the first since Wade Miley on May 7, 2021, in a 3-0 win at Cleveland. The New York Islanders kicked off the 2025 NHL Draft with their No. 1 selection of defenseman Matthew Schaefer. As the rest of the first-round selections roll in from L.A.'s Peacock Theater, The Athletic's experts break down picks No. 1-5 and what fans of the Islanders, Sharks, Blackhawks, Mammoth and Predators can expect. Players tend to be ranked higher based on two key elements: an elite ceiling and a likelihood of reaching that level sooner than later. So the more Schaefer became the consensus No. 1 pick, between rankings here at The Athletic and throughout the hockey sphere, the better bet he appeared to be here. There are two especially noteworthy elements to his game, according to our Scott Wheeler: his elite skating ability that translates on both ends of the ice and his maturity, despite being on the younger side of this draft class. Advertisement A team's draft strategy should be selecting the best player available, not need. So, Schaefer should have been the pick here, regardless of the Islanders' needs. But after today's Noah Dobson trade, this happens to check both boxes; he projects to grow into a top-pair caliber defenseman who can drive play and fills an important need on the back end. — Shayna Goldman, national writer Ultimately, Sharks general manager Mike Grier and his staff went with a polished all-around forward in Misa rather than uncorking a rumored curveball with Swedish center Anton Frondell. Frondell had emerged through reports in recent days as a consideration given his combination of size, skill and offensive potential. Even Porter Martone was rumored as a fit given his true power forward profile. But there is a reason why Misa was projected to be the No. 2 pick all along. One of the few to be granted exceptional player status, Misa delivered on his immense promise in the Ontario Hockey League. Because of his versatility, the Sharks could envision him as their 2C behind Macklin Celebrini or move him to the wing if they're determined to shift Will Smith back to center. Smith did display great chemistry with Celebrini in the second half of last season, and so San Jose could stick with that and have Misa, whose game has drawn comparisons to John Tavares, Dylan Larkin and Marian Hossa, develop into a top-six pivot. And the Sharks would do well even if Misa has the kind of career Logan Couture had for the franchise. — Eric Stephens, Sharks beat reporter With the first two selections going as most expected, the Blackhawks became the team to really set the path for the top-10 picks. Would they go with Anton Frondell, Caleb Desnoyers, Porter Martone, someone else? Almost none of them would have been a surprise. The Blackhawks ended up taking Frondell, a 6-foot-1 and 205-pound forward who they envision as another top-six piece to their rebuild puzzle. With Frondell's size and two-way game, the Blackhawks think he can perfectly complement what they already have in their forward roster pool, especially the likes of Connor Bedard and Frank Nazar, two undersized centers. Frondell took off in his draft year while playing in HockeyAllsvenskan, Sweden's second division. Desnoyers won the QMJHL playoff MVP in taking Moncton to the Memorial Cup and piled up 35 goals and 84 points in 56 games for one of the best points per game in the Q in the last 25 years. He's a very high-IQ pivot who excels as a playmaker and two-way player. Desnoyers is considered a high-end competitor and potential No. 1 center once he fills out — he's 6 feet 2 and 180 pounds — and spends another year or two developing. Utah has quickly been building out one of the deepest pools of young offensive talents in the league, including the recently acquired JJ Peterka, and Desnoyers will fit right in. — James Mirtle, national writer The Predators started this draft with a major organizational need at center and, with the No. 5 pick, a guaranteed opportunity to fill it. They did just that; Brady Martin, as mocked to them by Corey Pronman, was the pick. Martin was a bit of a late riser, but the appeal is clear. There might not be a better blend of skill, productivity and physicality in the draft. Martin starred at the World Juniors, scoring twice in the gold medal game, and finished the OHL season with 72 points in 57 games. Hollywood star Christopher McDonald will reprise his role as Shooter McGavin in the sequel. Earlier this week, McDonald spoke to People about how Kelce fared during the filming process. "Travis Kelce has been out there, and I just really liked him as a person. He is really funny. Way too handsome, by the way, but really a good actor actually," the Emmy nominee told the outlet. McDonald continued to praise the three-time Super Bowl winner, saying he is "surprisingly good." McDonald was also complimentary of Kelce's skill on the golf course. "I think he's got game," the actor noted, admitting he "did not" get to play with the NFL star while filming. Earlier this year, Kelce described the opportunity to be a part of the movie as "a dream come true." "I thought SNL was going to be the peak of my acting and showman or entertainment career," Kelce said during an appearance on "The Pat McAfee Show" in January. "Working with Happy Gilmore himself, the Sandman and Happy Productions, it was off the chain." The sequel to the 1996 sports comedy film is scheduled to be released July 25.
