My years of health and wellness expertise don't apply to just humans. I very much care about the well-being of our furry home companions too. I've taken care of pets for as long as I can remember, so safe to say I've tried many products to help make taking care of them convenient and safe. One product I've tried plenty of over the years is automatic pet feeders. I've tried "dumb" ones (no smart features), ones with camera integrations and two-way audio, budget ones, expensive ones -- you name it. After having the Whisker Litter-Robot for almost a year and liking how seamless the app is, I decided to give the Whisker Feeder-Robot a try to see if it's worth the hype (and the price). I can be gone from home for up to 12 hours each time I'm away. I need a feeder that is dependable and reliable. After testing for a few months, I can confidently say the Whisker-Robot has changed how I care for my cat.
CNET's key takeaways:
$299 and available at Whisker.com.
Reliable feedings, anti-jam technology, quiet operation, customizable colors, user-friendly app, battery backup (sold separately), large hopper and smart app alerts.
On the pricey side, portion calibration may take a few days, it works only with dry food, has no camera or two-way audio and the battery backup is sold separately.

Feeder-Robot: First impressions and setup
Out of the box, the Whisker Feeder Robot is sleek-looking but a little big compared with others I've tried. I was worried it might be too clunky for my small New York City apartment, but it blended in quite nicely into my living room without disrupting the aesthetic.
Setting up took around 15 minutes. There are no parts to put together; it comes already fully built, so most of the setup time was spent setting it up in the Whisker App (which I already had because of the Litter-Robot), connecting it to my Wi-Fi and adjusting my cat's feeding schedule. The Whisker app is intuitive and customizable -- you can schedule feedings down to the minute, adjust portion sizes and even trigger manual feedings.
I had to play around with the portion settings for a couple of days, but everything ran smoothly once I fine-tuned it with the appropriate portions for my cat.

How the Feeder-Robot works day to day
Nasha Addarich Martínez/CNET
Once I set up my cat's feeding schedule, the Feeder-Robot ran on autopilot. I set it to feed my cat once in the early morning (I give her wet food in the evenings) to prevent her from waking me up at 6 a.m. to feed her. The sound of the kibble dispensing is like a dinner bell for my cat; she comes running to it as soon as she hears it.
One feature I appreciate is the battery backup. If you live in an area prone to power outages, this feeder will continue to work seamlessly thanks to the internal battery system. Having the peace of mind that your cat will be fed even if the power goes out is invaluable, especially if it happens while you're not home. One thing to note is that the Feeder-Robot backup battery isn't included but sold separately for an additional $40.
The hopper holds 32 cups of dry food, and my cat eats only kibble once a day, so it holds enough food to last her over a month. But if your cat has multiple dry food feedings, or you have more than one cat, how long it lasts will vary. The design keeps the food fresh and prevents clogging, a common issue I've had with cheaper automatic feeders.

The Whisker App experience
The app is what makes this feeder feel premium. Most other feeder apps I've gotten from Amazon are clunky and outdated. On the Whisker App, I can monitor scheduled feedings, customize the schedule, lock the panel, give a snack, turn on the night light, toggle on gravity mode (no scheduled feedings, but rather the keeps the bowl full at all times), check the battery backup and see how much food the feeder has left. I also get a notification when a meal has been dispensed or missed (haven't had a missed meal yet). There's even a smart alert for low food levels, which keeps me from wondering how much food my cat has left.
If you're already using the Whisker Litter-Robot, you'll absolutely love how both devices sync within the same app. It feels like a smart home ecosystem for pets.
Feeder-Robot pros and cons
Here's a breakdown of the biggest advantages and minor drawbacks I encountered during my testing.
Pros
Extremely consistent and reliable feedings
Feeding history is viewable in app
Anti-jam technology
Quiet operation
Can be customized to preferred colors
User-friendly app
Battery backup for power outages
Large hopper and strong seal keep food fresh
Cons
Pricey compared to basic feeders
Portion calibration may take a few days
Only works with dry food
Doesn't have a camera or two-way audio
Who the Feeder-Robot is for
Nasha Addarich Martínez
If you're a pet parent who works long hours, travels often or just wants a consistent feeding schedule for your cat or dog, this automatic feeder is a great investment. It would work great for a multi-cat household or for pets on a strict feeding schedule. If you're already in the Whisker ecosystem, adding the Feeder-Robot makes sense because of the seamless integration of all Whisker devices on the same app.
CNET's buying advice: Is the Feeder-Robot worth it?
For me, the Feeder-Robot is worth the $299 price tag. It gives me peace of mind, a more structured routine for my cat -- plus, it's one less task I need to worry about. This feeder is thoroughly designed and can be 100% operated remotely (all buttons also exist on the feeder for manual adjustments). While it certainly isn't cheap, its reliability and control are worth it if you're serious about your pet's care setup.
If $299 for a pet feeder is too steep a price tag, check out this automatic pet feeder I've used for three years. It might not have the flashiest app, but it's $150 cheaper, has a built-in camera and two-way audio and will still feed your pet.

TIMELINE: Inside the evolving relationship between Trump and Musk from first term to this week's fallout
The fallout between Elon Musk and President Donald Trump is an evolving situation marked by a public blowup on Thursday, but their relationship ties back to Trump's first term and even earlier. A November 2016 CNBC interview with the Tesla CEO, who's now the richest man in the world, took a critical tone of the now president just days before he was elected president in an upset that signified the strength of the populist movement. "Honestly, I think Hillary's economic policies and her environmental policies particularly are the right ones, you know, but yeah. Also, I don't think this is the finest moment in our democracy at all," Musk said. "Well, I feel a bit stronger that probably he's not the right guy. He just doesn't seem to have the sort of character that reflects well on the United States," he later added in the interview. During Trump's first term, Musk was part of some of his economic advisory councils, which often includes CEOs, but ultimately left his post because he disagreed with the president's move to exit the Paris Climate Accords. "Am departing presidential councils. Climate change is real. Leaving Paris is not good for America or the world," Musk posted at the time. The two continued to have an on-and-off relationship, but there were some positive signs in May 2020. "Elon Musk, congratulations. Congratulations, Elon. Thanks, Elon. For Elon and 8,000 SpaceX employees, today is the fulfillment of a dream almost two decades in the making," Trump said at the Kennedy Space Center in May 2020. And at the SpaceX Demo-2 launch, Trump said he and Musk communicate regularly. "Well, I won't get into it. But, yeah — but I speak to him all the time. Great guy. He's one of our great brains. We like great brains. And Elon has done a fantastic job," he said. Fast forward to 2022, when Musk purchased Twitter and renamed it X, and brought back Trump's account that November, after it was suspended after the events of Jan. 6, 2021. In 2022, Musk also announced that he would vote Republican, but indicated he would back Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis if he opted to seek the nomination. DeSantis launched his campaign on X in a "space," a virtual public event forum, with Musk, who also reportedly significantly financially backed the Florida governor, according to The Wall Street Journal. However, a major turning point was in July 2024, after the assassination attempt of Trump at a rally in Butler, Penn. "I fully endorse President Trump and hope for his rapid recovery," Musk posted. Musk then campaigned for the president, including a famous moment when he was jumping on stage at his comeback rally in Butler. "I want to say what an honor it is to be here and, you know, the true test of someone's character is how they behave under fire, right?" Musk said at the rally. "And we had one president who couldn't climb a flight of stairs and another who was fist pumping after getting shot." "This is no ordinary election," the tech CEO continued. "The other side wants to take away your freedom of speech." "Just be a pest to everyone," he added. "You know, people on the street everywhere: Vote, vote, vote!" The tech billionaire spent roughly $300 million through America PAC to boost swing state voter efforts, including Pennsylvania. By the time the presidential election rolled around, Trump and Musk appeared to be close friends as the Tesla CEO was with Trump in Mar-a-Lago on election night. Over the next few days, Musk remained in Florida and was reportedly advising Trump on appointments and policy as the transition to a new administration kicked off. A week later, shortly before Musk and the new president appeared at a SpaceX launch together in Texas, Trump announced that Musk and tech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy would be heading up the Department of Government Efficiency in an effort to rid the government of waste, fraud, and abuse. Trump described the pair as "two wonderful Americans' and although Ramaswamy left that post in January and is now running for governor in Ohio, Musk stayed on and quickly became the face of an agency that made him the main target of attacks from Democrats pushing back on spending cuts that they argued were too drastic. Protests erupted nationwide against Musk and DOGE including violent outbursts at his Tesla dealerships that tanked the company's stock and were labeled as acts of "domestic terrorism" by the Justice Department. During the first few months of the year, Musk and Trump were spotted together at several viral events including a UFC fight, an Oval Office meeting where Musk's son "Little X" stole the show, and a cabinet meeting in late February where Musk was the main focus. In March, Trump hosted Elon at a Tesla showcase in front of the White House amid a dip in Tesla stock where the president told reporters he was purchasing a Tesla while touting the company. As Musk's time at DOGE began to wind down, his employee classification allowed him to serve for 130 days, the newly formed agency had become the poster child of anti-Trump sentiment from Democrats who consistently attacked the $175 billion in spending cuts that DOGE estimated it delivered. Signs of fracture in the relationship began showing in late May when Musk took a public shot at Trump's "big beautiful bill" as it made its way through Congress. "I was disappointed to see the massive spending bill, frankly, which increases the budget deficit, not just decreases it, and undermines the work that the DOGE team is doing," Musk said. Two days later, Musk announced his official departure from DOGE. "As my scheduled time as a Special Government Employee comes to an end, I would like to thank President @realDonaldTrump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending," Musk said, adding that the effects of DOGE "will only strengthen over time as it becomes a way of life throughout the government." DOGE, which fell short of Musk's initial goal of slashing $1 trillion in spending which Musk said he still remains optimistic will happen in the future, will continue its work without Musk, who said, "I look forward to continuing to be a friend and adviser to the president." That optimistic tone shifted drastically on June 3 when Musk took to X, the platform he owns, and blasted the budget reconciliation bill calling it "a disgusting abomination" and criticizing the Republicans who voted for it. "KILL THE BILL," Musk said the next day. A day after that, on Thursday, the feud hit a fever pitch. While speaking with reporters in the Oval Office, Trump said that he was "very disappointed" by Musk's vocal criticisms of the bill. The president claimed that Musk knew what was in the bill and "had no problem" with it until the EV incentives had to be cut. On X, Musk called that assessment "false." Trump turned to social media to criticize Musk, who he appointed to find ways to cut $2 trillion after forming the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). "Elon was 'wearing thin,' I asked him to leave, I took away his EV Mandate that forced everyone to buy Electric Cars that nobody else wanted (that he knew for months I was going to do!), and he just went CRAZY!" Trump said in one post. In another post, Trump said, "I don't mind Elon turning against me, but he should have done so months ago. This is one of the Greatest Bills ever presented to Congress. It's a Record Cut in Expenses, $1.6 Trillion Dollars, and the Biggest Tax Cut ever given." "If this Bill doesn't pass, there will be a 68% tax increase, and things far worse than that. I didn't create this mess, I'm just here to FIX IT. This puts our Country on a Path of Greatness. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!" At one point, Musk referenced late pedophile Jeffrey Epstein in relation to Trump as part of the larger tirade in a comment that several Republicans told Fox News Digital went "too far." Other posts from Musk included a claim that Trump would not have won the election without his help while accusing Trump of "ingratitude." In another post, Musk suggested that Trump should be impeached and replaced by Vice President Vance. It is unclear if a resolution to the feud is coming in the next few days. Fox News Digital reported on Friday morning that Musk wants to speak to Trump and that White House aides could possibly broker a meeting. Trump told Fox News on Friday that he isn't interested in talking to Musk, adding that "Elon's totally lost it." Trump also said to Fox News' Bret Baier that he isn't worried about Musk's suggestion to form a new political party, citing favorable polls and strong support from Republicans on Capitol Hill.

IEEE Puerto Rico MOVE Shows Technical Volunteers Can Benefit Humanity
In May I had an opportunity to visit Puerto Rico for an IEEE Governance Committee meeting and while I was there, I visited the IEEE volunteers who are behind the IEEE Puerto Rico MOVE. MOVE is an IEEE activity to provide technology and communication support to the Red Cross and other groups involved in disaster response activities around the world. IEEE reached out to Jen Castillo, then Puerto Rico IEEE Section chair, about how it could help Puerto Rico after the damage from Hurricane Maria in 2017. IEEE in general, the IEEE Foundation, the Humanitarian Activity Committee and various IEEE friends helped local volunteers in Puerto Rico by raising money and sending over 500 solar lamps to be distributed through impacted areas on the island. This experience led to discussions with IEEE USA and Mary Ellen & Garyson Randal, who founded IEEE's MOVE program with support from IEEE-USA in 2016, about doing something with MOVE in Puerto Rico. MOVE partnered with the American Red Cross to provide outfitted trucks for communications and other technical support to disaster areas. The American Red Cross had an existing Chapter in Puerto Rico and as a consequence, five years ago a number of local IEEE volunteers became ARC volunteers and MOVE PR began. Due to the support needed and the local conditions in Puerto Rico after major hurricanes, the volunteers decide to develop a more compact approach than the MOVE trucks used in the continental USA. The plan was to create modular kits that have similar capabilities to the trucks but in a smaller and portable configuration, which allow deploying with them anywhere in the island. The picture below shows some of these MOVE modules in the group's storage area in San Juan. The protective boxes are labeled with numbers, so volunteers can quickly grab all the boxes with the same numbers as a kit to take with them to support the ARC at the disaster sites. MOVE PR modular kits Tom Coughlin With the support of MOVE USA, the MOVE PR volunteers were able to create three kits with capabilities for providing power by using inverter battery banks that use solar panels to generate electricity, and equipment that allows people without access to power to charge small devices, such as mobile phones. To tackle the communication problems that comes after events like hurricanes, the MOVE USA Radio team Helped MOVE PR volunteers to become licensed ham radio operators and provided radio equipment for each of the modular kits including a portable antenna designed by MOVE USA volunteers. The three modular kits enable the creation of a reliable communication network that could cover the whole island when they are deployed at key locations around Puerto Rico. Another difference for MOVE PR from MOVE USA is that since the island is not very big, volunteers could switch off at a disaster site every few days, rather than the week-long or greater deployments for many disasters in the continental USA. During these past 5 years MOVE Puerto Rico has supported ARC in various Disaster Response Operations around the island by supporting the Disaster Technical Services team with everything related to technology support during those operations: equipment management, networking support and power generation using these kits. In addition, when not involved in disasters MOVE volunteers provide technical support to the local ARC. Another key part of MOVE is to spread the message of the importance of STEM education through outreach events that promote technical careers and their impact on society. Along with that message, MOVE shows how IEEE supports student development within these STEM related careers and how it can become their professional home. MOVE Puerto Rico chair, Francisco Carrero, said that, 'Living in Puerto Rico and having experienced various hurricanes and how climate change is affecting our island, I found purpose on volunteering in the MOVE Program and it has been a fantastic way to use my technical knowledge and skills learned from my engineering profession to help my community. I definitively agree with IEEE mission: 'To foster technological innovation and excellence for the benefit of humanity.' I can say that the MOVE Program from IEEE gave me the satisfaction of paying forward to the world the blessings that I have received and the sense of gratification of making a difference in my community.' The picture below shows some of the MOVE PR team in the group's rented storage space in San Juan. IEEE MOVE disaster response volunteers show how technology can be a force for good and supporting IEEE's missions of advancing technology for humanity.
