The Whisker Feeder Robot Solved My Cat Feeding Anxiety When I'm Away From Home

Whisker Feeder Robot $299 at Whisker Pros Extremely consistent and reliable feedings Anti-jam technology Quiet operation Can be customized to preferred colors User-friendly app Battery backup for power outages Large hopper and strong seal keep food fresh Cons Pricey compared with basic feeders Portion calibration may take a few days Works only with dry food Doesn't have a camera or two-way audio Whisker Feeder Robot $299 at Whisker My years of health and wellness expertise don't apply to just humans. I very much care about the well-being of our furry home companions too. I've taken care of pets for as long as I can remember, so safe to say I've tried many products to help make taking care of them convenient and safe. One product I've tried plenty of over the years is automatic pet feeders. I've tried "dumb" ones (no smart features), ones with camera integrations and two-way audio, budget ones, expensive ones -- you name it. After having the Whisker Litter-Robot for almost a year and liking how seamless the app is, I decided to give the Whisker Feeder-Robot a try to see if it's worth the hype (and the price). I can be gone from home for up to 12 hours each time I'm away. I need a feeder that is dependable and reliable. After testing for a few months, I can confidently say the Whisker-Robot has changed how I care for my cat. CNET's key takeaways: $299 and available at Reliable feedings, anti-jam technology, quiet operation, customizable colors, user-friendly app, battery backup (sold separately), large hopper and smart app alerts. On the pricey side, portion calibration may take a few days, it works only with dry food, has no camera or two-way audio and the battery backup is sold separately. Nasha Addarich Martínez/CNET Feeder-Robot: First impressions and setup Out of the box, the Whisker Feeder Robot is sleek-looking but a little big compared with others I've tried. I was worried it might be too clunky for my small New York City apartment, but it blended in quite nicely into my living room without disrupting the aesthetic. Setting up took around 15 minutes. There are no parts to put together; it comes already fully built, so most of the setup time was spent setting it up in the Whisker App (which I already had because of the Litter-Robot), connecting it to my Wi-Fi and adjusting my cat's feeding schedule. The Whisker app is intuitive and customizable -- you can schedule feedings down to the minute, adjust portion sizes and even trigger manual feedings. I had to play around with the portion settings for a couple of days, but everything ran smoothly once I fine-tuned it with the appropriate portions for my cat. Whisker Feeder-Robot specs Feature Details Product dimensions 15"H x 12.5"D x 13"W Capacity 32 cups Portion sizes Adjustable from 1/8 cup to 1 cup per meal Wi-Fi Connectivity Requires 2.4 GHz App compatibility iOS and Android Food type Dry kibble only Material BPA-free plastic Noise level Low Smart features Scheduled feedings, low food alerts and feeding history Multi-pet friendly Yes, but not individual pet ID or tracking Price $299 Warranty 1-year limited warranty How the Feeder-Robot works day to day Nasha Addarich Martínez/CNET Once I set up my cat's feeding schedule, the Feeder-Robot ran on autopilot. I set it to feed my cat once in the early morning (I give her wet food in the evenings) to prevent her from waking me up at 6 a.m. to feed her. The sound of the kibble dispensing is like a dinner bell for my cat; she comes running to it as soon as she hears it. One feature I appreciate is the battery backup. If you live in an area prone to power outages, this feeder will continue to work seamlessly thanks to the internal battery system. Having the peace of mind that your cat will be fed even if the power goes out is invaluable, especially if it happens while you're not home. One thing to note is that the Feeder-Robot backup battery isn't included but sold separately for an additional $40. The hopper holds 32 cups of dry food, and my cat eats only kibble once a day, so it holds enough food to last her over a month. But if your cat has multiple dry food feedings, or you have more than one cat, how long it lasts will vary. The design keeps the food fresh and prevents clogging, a common issue I've had with cheaper automatic feeders. Nasha Addarich Martínez/CNET The Whisker App experience The app is what makes this feeder feel premium. Most other feeder apps I've gotten from Amazon are clunky and outdated. On the Whisker App, I can monitor scheduled feedings, customize the schedule, lock the panel, give a snack, turn on the night light, toggle on gravity mode (no scheduled feedings, but rather the keeps the bowl full at all times), check the battery backup and see how much food the feeder has left. I also get a notification when a meal has been dispensed or missed (haven't had a missed meal yet). There's even a smart alert for low food levels, which keeps me from wondering how much food my cat has left. If you're already using the Whisker Litter-Robot, you'll absolutely love how both devices sync within the same app. It feels like a smart home ecosystem for pets. Feeder-Robot pros and cons Here's a breakdown of the biggest advantages and minor drawbacks I encountered during my testing. Pros Extremely consistent and reliable feedings Feeding history is viewable in app Anti-jam technology Quiet operation Can be customized to preferred colors User-friendly app Battery backup for power outages Large hopper and strong seal keep food fresh Cons Pricey compared to basic feeders Portion calibration may take a few days Only works with dry food Doesn't have a camera or two-way audio Who the Feeder-Robot is for Nasha Addarich Martínez If you're a pet parent who works long hours, travels often or just wants a consistent feeding schedule for your cat or dog, this automatic feeder is a great investment. It would work great for a multi-cat household or for pets on a strict feeding schedule. If you're already in the Whisker ecosystem, adding the Feeder-Robot makes sense because of the seamless integration of all Whisker devices on the same app. CNET's buying advice: Is the Feeder-Robot worth it? For me, the Feeder-Robot is worth the $299 price tag. It gives me peace of mind, a more structured routine for my cat -- plus, it's one less task I need to worry about. This feeder is thoroughly designed and can be 100% operated remotely (all buttons also exist on the feeder for manual adjustments). While it certainly isn't cheap, its reliability and control are worth it if you're serious about your pet's care setup. If $299 for a pet feeder is too steep a price tag, check out this automatic pet feeder I've used for three years. It might not have the flashiest app, but it's $150 cheaper, has a built-in camera and two-way audio and will still feed your pet.

How to have a happy dog: Experts reveal nine-part formula to help your pet live their best life - so, does it sound familiar to you?

Do you ever catch yourself wondering if your dog is truly happy? While a waggy tail can be a telling sign, it's hard to know for sure if they're satisfied day-to-day. Now, one of the UK's leading dog behaviourists has created a nine-part formula to help your dog live their best life. Dr Tom Mitchell, a well-known figure in the world of dog behaviour and training, said: 'There's no one-size-fits-all when it comes to happiness. 'Every dog is unique, and as their owner, you know them best. 'Think of this formula as your toolkit, ready to be tweaked to suit your dog's personality and lifestyle'. He has detailed how much affection, play and training each owner should aim for. So, will you give his formula a go? CALM SETTLING (at least 60 per cent of the day) Dr Mitchell said dogs 'thrive on calm' and as much as 60 per cent of their day should be in a relaxed atmosphere. Calm time can let your dog decompress and helps their brain stay balanced and resilient, he explained. Owners could create a quiet room at home, with their dog's favourite blanket and some gentle background music, with a few chew toys to keep them relaxed without over-exciting them. SLEEP (at least 10 hours) A 2020 study found dogs sleep about 10 hours a day, helping them process the world around them. Well-rested dogs are calmer, happier and better learners. Dr Mitchell said owners could try and reward their dog with a treat for making good sleep choices – for example choosing to take themselves off and settle down in their bed. Setting up a cosy sleep space could help, as well as using calming sounds like soft music and avoiding disruption before bed. NUTRITION (balanced and gut friendly) Looking after your dog's diet is key, Dr Mitchell explained, and it is closely linked to their happiness. 'Not only should you feed a diet rich in high meat content and natural ingredients but also ensure it is rich in prebiotics – these help maintain a healthy digestion and act as the fuel for the micro-organisms doing the hard work of building those happy chemicals,' he said. 'The national dog owner obsession of how their dog's poo is looking isn't misplaced; the easiest measure of how your dog's gut is doing is by assessing their poo.' PLAY (30 minutes total, in 5-minute bursts) Short, frequent bursts of play have been shown to improve learning and reduce stress. Owners could try and range of play activities including a tug-of-war, hide-and-seek with treats or even an obstacle course. AFFECTION (at least 20 minutes, but there's no maximum) Stroking, cuddles, or simply sitting together builds trust and connection, Dr Mitchell said. However, it's important to know when your dog has had enough. Observing their behaviour is key – for example, lip-licking, panting, moving away or going very still can be signs your dog isn't enjoying it. MOVEMENT (1-2 hours daily) Daily movement helps keep joints healthy and minds alert, Dr Mitchell said. And not every dog need to hit the great outdoors to stay active. Indoor-friendly ways to keep your dog moving include food-dispensing toys, training sessions and indoor obstacle courses. Daily movement is important for all dogs. While chasing sticks is fun to do outside, there are also indoor-friendly ways to get them moving ENRICHMENT (1 hour of 'figuring stuff out') In a 2019 study, it was shown that simply by incorporating enrichment into the lives of dogs in a rescue centre, they were more likely to pass the behaviour tests to then go on to find their loving homes. This could involve challenges such as puzzle toys, snuffle mats, trick training or a new walking route. SOCIAL INTERACTION (every day) Most dogs prefer human company and quality interaction – such as play dates with friends and family - is vital, Dr Mitchell said. 'Contrary to wolves, domestic dogs get a larger oxytocin surge from interacting with their human family than other dogs, so if your dog can be unpredictable with other dogs or finds them a bit scary right now, rest assured the most important interaction in your dog's life is with you,' he explained. TRAINING (four 3-minute sessions daily) A few fun, reward-based sessions a day can build confidence and strengthen your bond with your dog. Name training, lead training and confidence training can all help. 'The best thing about this formula,' Dr Mitchell said, 'is that it's completely flexible. 'Each component can be tailored based on your dog's individual personality and their likes and dislikes! 'You know your dog better than anyone - and this gives you the tools to shape a life full of tail wags, calm evenings and joyful adventures.' Dr Mitchell teamed up with Harrington's, a natural pet food brand, to create his 'happy dog' formula.

Kaley Cuoco, Katie Hunt on Oh Norman! and Rescuing Chihuahuas

Katie Hunt has had pivotal roles in several amazing companies, including Warby Parker, Hinge, and Showfields. Things were going great for her career-wise until she faced what she describes as "an epic fail." Her business shut down and she was forced to move back home with her parents. She was down, but not out. After some much-needed rest and reflection time, she received a LinkedIn message that she first thought was a prank, but it led to her co-founding a new company, Oh Norman!, with fellow dog lover Kaley Cuoco. Their mission: "make joyful, cutting-edge products that improve the lives of the animals we love." With health and wellness offerings like "Your Breath Effing Stinks!" and "Calm the Eff Down!," Oh Norman! has amassed a devoted following of pet parents who love the science-backed results of the products, the cheeky vibe of the company, and Oh Norman!'s charitable efforts to help animals in need. I chatted with Katie on a recent episode of How Success Happens about her unpredictable career path, the growth of Oh Norman!, her advice to founders, and to get the definitive answer to the age-old question: who is better, dog people or cat people? Listen to the entire episode here or wherever you get your podcasts. And check out highlights from our conversation below, which have been edited for length and clarity. Subscribe to How Success Happens: Apple | Spotify | YouTube Dan Bova: Please give us the elevator pitch of Oh Norman! Katie Hunt: Oh Norman! makes healthy AF products that give back. Our products are sustainable, ethical, vet-approved, and all-natural. It is the things that Kaley and I wanted for our dogs but weren't finding on the market, so we decided we had to do it ourselves. Did you know anything about making dog food before you went down this road? Not at all, and I actually think that there's an incredible opportunity when you don't have a bias going in. When you don't know what you can't do, sometimes you try things in a different way. That naivete allows you to take greater risks, which was great for us with Oh Norman! It doesn't always pay off. I was one of the co-founders of Showfields. We had five locations at scale, and we were working with a thousand direct-to-consumer businesses before COVID hit. And what you don't know is how hard it is to actually operate a physical space. If I could go back in time, I would've done another direct-to-consumer business and not opened a physical space. It was an epic fail. But everyone needs one, though. Related: 'I Lost My Mind': Erin Andrews Explains What It's Like to Be in the Middle of the Taylor Swift Effect How did you cope with that failure? It was heartbreaking at the time. You're putting your time and effort into this idea of something being bigger than you. I was 36, single, and could no longer afford my rent in New York. I moved home with my mom and dad to Rhode Island. And I had this moment of "this is what epic failure really looks like." It was hard to lose the business, to lose the apartment, to lose the life that you had been building. And it was the best thing that ever happened to me. How so? For the first time in a very long time, I was actually happy with my life slowing down a little bit. It was forced upon me, but I had been running at a million miles an hour for so long that when I finally was forced to slow down, I thought it was gonna drive me crazy. I thought I was gonna be so bored. But in reality, I was like, "Oh, wow. I'm missing out on a lot of things that other people are doing. I've just been working. There are all these other aspects of life." So I had this time where I got to reflect prior to meeting Kaley and starting Oh Norman! I was able to think about what I would want my life to look like if I were to go back into startups again. How did you and Kaley connect? She wanted to start a business, and she put her team in charge of finding people who might be able to help her do that. And so I got a LinkedIn message that was something like, "Have you ever thought about co-founding a celebrity company?" It felt like a prank to get that message, but I responded and eventually found out that on the other side of this is Kaley Cuoco. Now she is one of the highest-paid actors of all time. She made, like, billions for The Big Bang Theory. She does not need to have a company in any way, shape, or form, but she has a rescue farm with over 200 rescue animals. This is her true passion in life. She wanted to create a company that gives back from day one. And so when I met her and she told me all the things that she wanted to do, it was just like a light bulb that went off for me. I thought, "This person is exactly who they say they are." I think what sealed the deal for us is that we are two of the only people who rescue elderly chihuahuas. We both have a love for these stinky, toothless dogs, and we think they're absolutely beautiful! Related: 'What Really Gets Me Angry': Bar Rescue's Jon Taffer Shares the Small Business Practice That Drives Him Nuts Where did the name come from? Norman was Kaylee's first rescue dog. This entire company is dedicated to Norman. "What would Norman do?" is sort of our ethos. If you could imagine building a company where a dog founded it, what would they want? You would make sure that everything you're producing is in sustainable packaging. You would make sure that every person, end-to-end, who touches the product is treated ethically and is paid fairly. And you would use all-natural ingredients. You would never use anything that could hurt an animal. This is baked into the DNA because it's what Norman would want. For people thinking about starting their own thing, what's your top advice? There are incredible communities out there that you can tap into — Reddit, your friends — where you can put ideas out there and get feedback. Don't create in a vacuum and don't try for perfection. Go out there with the messy ideas. You don't know what you don't know. I think too many entrepreneurs waste time and money trying to get something perfect before they get feedback on it. And then it's too late. They lost too much time and money to iterate. How did getting feedback steer you? Before we ever created a product, we created a community. And look, we have a very unfair competitive advantage with Kaley — we had 150,000 Instagram followers before we ever even dropped a product. But the reason we put so much time and effort into creating that community first was that we then went to them with endless questions. What's wrong with your dog? What would you change? What flavors does your dog not eat? You would assume you know the answer to those things, but we uncovered a lot of data that we weren't expecting, and it has led to our roadmap. Important question for you: dog people versus cat people, who's better? Oh gosh. I've had cats, and I've had dogs, but I am a dog person. I spent 15 years chasing my cat around and trying to get it to sit on my lap. And I spent the last 15 years trying to get my dogs off my lap because they're there constantly. I like being chased [laughs].
