Pune Metro crosses 1-lakh milestone in smartcard sales
Pune Metro has crossed a key milestone by issuing over one lakh smartcards, reflecting the growing acceptance of its cashless ticketing system among city commuters. With Phase 1 of the Metro now fully operational — covering the Vanaz to Ramwadi and PCMC to Swargate routes — the service has steadily gained the trust of Punekars as a reliable mode of public transport. The metro's daily ridership currently stands at around 1.6 lakh passengers.
Work on the expansion of Phase 1 is also progressing, with construction underway for the extended route from PCMC to Nigdi, and the tendering process in progress for the proposed underground corridor from Swargate to Katraj.
Among the various ticketing options available — including ticket vending machines, WhatsApp ticketing, kiosks, and counters — the smartcard has emerged as the most preferred choice, thanks to its convenience and ease of use. On August 12, 2023, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari launched the 'One Pune Metro Card' (NCMC-compliant), and as of April 21, 2025, Pune Metro has sold over 1 lakh cards.
Of these, 58,277 are 'One Pune Cards', 23,378 are student pass cards, and 18,389 are non-KYC cards. Currently, nearly 80% of Pune Metro's revenue comes through digital payments, making it the leading metro network in the country in terms of digital transactions.
There are three types of Pune Metro cards, including one Pune card, a student pass card, and a non-KYC card.
'Commuters using these smartcards benefit from fare discounts — 10% on weekdays and 30% on weekends for One Pune and Non-KYC cards. These cards allow seamless travel by simply tapping at the AFC gates during entry and exit, eliminating the need to queue for tickets. The fare is automatically deducted based on the distance travelled,' said Hemant Sonawane, Pune Metro director (Administration and Public Relations).

Cabinet clears two DAs, Metro, Manmohan varsity & more
HYDERABAD: The state Cabinet meeting, chaired by Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, on Thursday approved the release of two pending Dearness Allowances (DA) for government employees and accepted several key demands raised by employee unions. Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, addressing the media after the meeting, said one DA will be released immediately, while the second will be disbursed after six months. Welfare of employees To support employee welfare, the Cabinet approved the establishment of a Health Trust with the chief secretary as chairman. The government will contribute Rs 500 per employee, matching the employee contribution, to provide comprehensive health benefits. Metro expansion and infrastructure boost The Cabinet approved the expansion of the Metro Rail network at an estimated cost of Rs 19,579 crore. I&PR Minister Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy said expansion will cover three corridors — Shamshabad to Future City (39.6 km), JBS to Medchal (24.5 km) and JBS to Shamirpet (22 km) — totalling 86.1 km. The proposals will be forwarded to the Union government for approval, Vikramarka disclosed. He also revealed that the Cabinet okayed proposals for construction of 5,190 km of Roads and Buildings (R&B) roads and 7,947 km of Panchayat Raj roads under the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM), to be completed over the next two and a half years. The government has allocated Rs 16,780 crore for Panchayat Raj roads, and Rs 16,414 crore for R&B roads. University to be named after Manmohan Singh In another decision, the Cabinet resolved to name the upcoming Earth Science University in Kothagudem after former prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh. State to clear employee dues in phased manner It also approved the formation of Medical Invalidation Committees at the district level for employee-related health evaluations. Vikramarka further said that the Cabinet has decided to clear pending employee dues in a phased manner, releasing at least Rs 700 crore per month. It also approved a 12.5% quota for employees in Secretariat posts, as demanded by unions and sanctioned the grading system for panchayat staff.

Metro seeks 20cr from KMDA for Chingrighata subway
Kolkata: Metro has asked KMDA to deposit 50% — Rs 20 crore — of the cost of the proposed underpass at Chingrighata. Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd (RVNL), the implementing agency of the New Garia-Airport corridor, will share half the cost "according to the agreement with the state govt". KMDA has also been asked to approve the construction methodology submitted by RVNL three years ago. TOI reported on May 28 that "RVNL is preparing the detailed project report for the proposed three-way pedestrian underpass at Chingrighata", after cops decided to withhold traffic blocks at the busy crossing for two weekend nights until the underpass was built. The weekend traffic regulation is needed for bridging the last 366m viaduct gap of the Orange line's Ruby-Sector V section. Girder-launching work at the Chingrighata crossing has been stalled since Feb 2. RVNL cannot meet its June 2025 deadline to complete the 8km Phase II. KMC's nod for the underpass' basic design, submitted by RVNL in June 2022, came on April 8, 2025. "Even as the most crucial part of the project remains stalled at Chingrighata, RVNL is going ahead with the underpass construction, as told by the state govt," a railway official said. The urban development department planned the underpass at Chingrighata along with the foot overbridge as a two-pronged approach towards reducing accidents at the busy intersection. At a proposed depth of two-and-a-half metres, the underpass would be three-and-a-half metres wide, with openings on Canal South Road, Sukantanagar, and Jal Vayu Vihar.
