Eritrea: Integrated Environmental Redressing Project in Emni-Haili Sub-zone
The integrated environmental redressing project launched in 2021 in Adi-Agua, Emni-Haili sub-zone, is making significant contributions to water and soil conservation, as well as wildlife preservation.
During a visit to the area, Governor of the Southern Region Mr. HabteabTesfatsion was briefed by Mr. Michael Gebreyohannes, the project coordinator, who reported that the project spans approximately 4,000 hectares. Over 45,000 indigenous trees have been planted and are reportedly in good condition.
Mr. Michael also noted that similar projects in the Mai-Mine and Dekemhare sub-zones serve as strong examples of effective conservation efforts that could be emulated elsewhere.
Following the visit, Mr. Habteab held a meeting with experts and local residents to discuss future plans and address ongoing challenges.
Participants of the meeting expressed that they had personally witnessed the positive impact of the project on soil enrichment and wildlife restoration, and affirmed their commitment to ensuring its sustainability.

South Sudan: Peace begins with clean and healthy communities
"Peacekeeping today means more than protecting civilians from conflict. It means standing with communities to tackle health risks, improving living conditions, and showing we care." When gloves and shovels go hand-in-hand with determination and dedication, a meaningful difference and new ambience became a reality for the local university, which was the focus of the clean-up campaign. "For us students and the wider community, this means a great deal, we learn the importance of how a simple action can forge unison," said William Wolwek, President of the University's Student Union. From the female dormitories extending to the main assembly area, the scrape of shovels mixed with the beautiful sound of laughter as students and peacemakers toiled away side by side. Blocked drains, scattered litter are no longer a concern; swept away by hard work, unity and pride. Talk of perfect timing too. With the rainy season well underway, Western Bahr El Ghazal, like other regions across South Sudan, is at great threat due to rising cholera cases. The work to unclog sewage pipes and improve sanitation and hygiene will help reduce this risk. "There is a real difference now,' said William Wolwek. "The places that were once full of waste are now clean. It shows what we can achieve when we work together to protect our communities." By supporting grassroots initiatives like this one, UNMISS is fortifying its broader commitment to peace, health, and dignity. Eritrea: World Environment Day Observed at National Level
World Environment Day, 5 June, was observed at the national level at the Central Region Administration Hall under the theme 'Ending Plastic Pollution.' The occasion was attended by senior Government and PFDJ officials, as well as representatives of UN offices in Eritrea and other invited guests. Speaking at the event, Mr. Tesfay Gebreselasie, Minister of Land, Water and Environment, stated that plastic pollution has reached uncontrollable levels globally, and emphasized that addressing the issue requires collective action. Minister Tesfay noted that unattended waste—especially plastic—has severe health consequences. He called for proper waste management, support for enterprises engaged in waste processing, and the implementation of long-term practical measures to improve waste management. Mr. Fesehaye Haile, Governor of the Central Region, stated that raising public awareness alone is not sufficient and emphasized the need for an integrated effort to ensure a safe environment. Mr. Mulubrhan Gebreyohannes, Head of Environment at the Ministry of Land, Water and Environment, presented a research paper on 'Management and Consequences of Plastic Waste.' Eritrean Nationals Celebrate Independence Day Anniversary
Eritrean nationals in Saudi Arabia, Great Britain, Germany, Australia, and New Zealand have colorfully celebrated the 34th Independence Day anniversary under the theme 'Our Cohesion – Our Armour.' The celebratory event in Dammam, held on 30 May, was attended by Ms. Weini Gerezgihier, Chargé d'Affaires at the Eritrean Embassy in Saudi Arabia; Mr. Gebremeskel Kidane, Chairman of the Eritrean Community in Dammam; and Ms. Abrehet Minasie, Chairperson of the National Union of Eritrean Women in the city, along with a number of nationals. The event featured various cultural and artistic programs. Speaking on the occasion, Ms. Weini emphasized the deep meaning of the theme of this year's Independence Day anniversary, stating that with committed leadership, a united people, and a dedicated Defense Force, Eritrea, just as it did in achieving independence and safeguarding sovereignty, will emerge victorious in national development endeavors. The 34th Independence Day anniversary was also enthusiastically celebrated across British cities, including London, Birmingham, Manchester, Glasgow, Leeds, Sheffield, Liverpool, Middlesbrough, Leicester, Nottingham, Coventry, Newcastle, Wakefield, Bristol, Southampton, Cardiff, and Dublin.
