‘The Encampments' Documentary On Gaza War Protests At Columbia University Sets Milestone For New Indie Label
has turned out looks like the highest per-screen average opening for a documentary with an anticipated $80k+ and sold-out screenings at an exclusive run at the Angelika Film Center in New York.
It's a major step for indie distributor Watermelon Pictures, a new label, which had moved up the doc's release given the timeliness of its subject matter. It follows students at Columbia University who in 2024 launched a movement protesting the war in Gaza. The film features detained activist Mahmoud Khalil, a graduate student active in the demonstrations who also served as a spokesperson for the group with the University. He was arrested by ICE agents on March 8 and has been held in a detention center in Louisiana, where he faces deportation amid a legal fight over where his case should be heard.

'This film matters, and people are ready for it. It confirms our decision to fast-track the release — we knew the urgency was there, and we knew the demand was real,' said Justin DiPietro, EVP of Watermelon Pictures' parent, MPI Media Group.
The top documentary performance over the last decade was 2018's , which took in $300.8k on four screens, or about $74k per theater.
'This landmark opening is also a testament to our incredible grassroots effort and the powerful social push we built,' DiPietro added. 'Along with Executive Producer Macklemore, we brought this story to the people, and the people showed up.' The Encampments expands to Los Angeles and other top markets next Friday.
Documentary October 8 from Briarcliff Entertainment, which explores the surge in U.S. anti-semitism, including on college campuses, after Hamas' October 7 attack on Israel, passed the $1 million mark this weekend with $103k at 114 theaters. That's a cume of $1.09 million in week 3.
No Other Land (which opened in late January) is now at $2.055 million after an estimated weekend gross of $135k. Hamdan Ballal, one of the Palestinian co-directors of the Oscar-winning documentary, was freed earlier this week in Israel after being beaten and detained. The film was directed by a group of Palestinian and Israeli activists and filmmakers.
Wide-ish: Sony Pictures Classics opened to $1.21 million on 1,017 screens.
Moderate: Filipino romantic comedy My Love Will Make You Disappear is grossing $500k on 225 screens opening weekend.
Other limited releases: Focus Features' by James Griffiths kicked off with $92k at 4 locations in New York and Los Angeles ($23 PTA). With a 96% Critics Score, initial exit polls from these two markets show a total positive recommend of 92%; with a definite recommend at 79%. Expands into circa 50 theaters in the top ten markets next week
Bleecker Street's saw $66.8k on two NYC screens driven by strong reviews and positive work of mouth. Continues a major press push and heads into nationwide expansion next week.
In week 2, documentary directed by Jeremy Workman and self-released by Wheelhouse Creative/mTuckman media, saw $23.5k at its IFC Center debut with multiple sold out shows and a gross limited by theater capacity. It also held in Providence and adding select runs across Rhode Island and neighboring areas. So it's looking at a healthy weekend gross of $61k and a cume of $123k including its opening week theater, Providence Place, which sits atop the titular secret abode populated for years by a group of artists and renegades.
Documentary from Greenwich Entertainment, on the illustrious six-decade career of the singer/songwriter and LGBTQ activist that began in the Greenwich Village folk scene of the 1960's, opened to $9k on 2 screens, IFC Center and New Plaza Cinema. Debuted at DocNYC last November. Opens in LA on Friday, April 4 at the Laemmle Monica and Glendale, then expands to San Francisco Bay the following week in 4 locations as part of national arthouse tour. Airs on PBS' American Masters in June.
Drafthouse Films opened to $17k on 27 screens with multiple sold-out screenings in NYC and LA.

S.F.'s new Pride festival faces backlash over stance on war in Gaza
Two Bay Area artists have pulled out of SoSF, because of organizers' stance on the war in Gaza, and are instead planning their own competing Pride event. DJ Adam Kraft, founder of the event company Fake and Gay, and drag queen Nicki Jizz, who created the 'Reparations' drag show, opted to part ways with the outdoor music event scheduled for June 28 shortly after Oakland native Kehlani decided to drop off the lineup as SoSF's headliner last week. 'SoSF made a statement regarding Kehlani's stance and language being pro-Palestine, which resulted in a wave of comments asking them to clarify exactly what issues they had with Kehlani's position and language,' Kraft told the Chronicle on Monday, June 9. 'We, along with the majority of our community, stand with the Palestinian people, and felt that message should not be obfuscated.' The Chronicle has reached out to SoSF organizers for comment. The since-deleted statement by SoSF was posted to social media in May shortly after Kehlani faced concert cancellations by Cornell University and Central Park's SummerStage Pride concert over what the Ivy League deemed 'antisemitic, anti-Israel sentiments.' As first reported by the Standard, the statement noted that the festival's team 'fundamentally disagree' with Kehlani's language, and went on to explain they were seeking to 'engage with her team' instead of canceling her San Francisco appearance. A joint statement by Kehlani and the festival was also included in an effort to smooth over any new criticism. 'No person should ever fall casualty of a war they did not choose and do not support,' the statement read. 'This sentiment extends to Jewish people, the same way it extends to Palestinian people, the same way it extends to all people.' In April, Kehlani responded to her Cornell concert cancellation with an Instagram video clarifying that she is 'anti-genocide' and 'anti the actions of the Israeli government.' But she has continued to be criticized for her views. The singer has frequently used her platform to voice her opposition to Israel and Zionism, and included the phrase 'long live the intifada' in the music video for her 2024 song 'Next 2 U.' The phrase translates to 'uprising' or 'resistance' in Arabic, but is also considered by some as a call for violence against Jews. While announcing Kehlani severed ties with the event on Instagram, SoSF organizers revealed that the one-day celebration would no longer be at Pier 80's warehouse. Instead, it's set to take place as a block party across the street at 900 Marin St. That post has since been deleted, though this information is still on the event's website. It is still unclear why Kehlani, who identifies as a lesbian and uses she/they pronouns, withdrew from SoSF. But Kraft said that it did influence his and Nicki Jizz's plans to cancel their appearances. 'We pulled out of SoSF because we felt like our and our community's voices were not being heard or considered and for a Pride event, especially in this moment under the current administration, uplifting queer voices should be of the utmost importance,' Kraft said. 'I just couldn't bring myself to be a part of an event which started to feel more and more exploitative of pink dollars during such a crucial time.' 'This was an easy decision to make to stand up for what's right,' Nicki Jizz added. Looking ahead, Kraft and Nicki Jizz are determined to pull together their own Pride weekend event. 'We would love to be able to provide an alternative space where people feel more comfortable and excited to attend, and know that their money is not going to a cause or entity that is actively in opposition to their own views,' Kraft said. 'It is super last minute to attempt to do something, but we are trying our best.' Both Kraft and Nicki Jizz noted that the SoSF organizers they have worked with throughout the process have been 'understanding' and 'supportive.' But Kraft pointed out 'it feels like mixed messaging,' as the way in which organizers have continued to promote the event doesn't align with their behavior behind the scenes. One example he cited is that when SoSF shared its new flyer, sans Kehlani, they made no mention of his or Nicki Jizz's departure. 'To me that speaks volumes,' Kraft said. 'They were only using us for our local audience reach and did not value us as contributors to the event.'

Lili Reinhart's queer indie series, 'Hal & Harper,' is hitting MUBI this fall
Sapphics, are you paying attention? You are going to want to know this: A new independent streaming series starring Lili Reinhart and Cooper Raiff is headed our way! On Monday, Deadline broke the news that streaming service MUBI acquired the rights to Hal & Harper, an eight-episode show centered around the titular codependent siblings, played by Reinhart and Raiff. Raiff also created, wrote, and directed the show. The series premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, earning rave reviews from viewers who appreciated both the heart and the comedy at the core of the show. Notably, both Reinhart and Raiff also play the much younger versions of themselves in childhood flashbacks, adding a Pen15-like quality to those sequences. If that wasn't enough to have us looking forward to Hal & Harper, it's also got a stacked cast that includes some queer faves. Mark Ruffalo plays their father, Betty Gilpin plays his girlfriend, and Bottoms' Havana Rose Liu plays the girl Hal is interested in. Oh, and did we mention Harper has a girlfriend? The Sex Lives of College Girls star Alyah Chanelle Scott tackles that role, while Addison Timlin plays the coworker Harper is crushing on. MUBI has had a hand in distributing several well-received queer films in recent years, including Shiva Baby, Knife + Heart, and Benedetta. Hal & Harper is one of a few series they have coming up, with the acquisition being praised by those hoping independent TV is a viable way forward. Justin Baldoni countersuit against Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds dismissed
(NewsNation) — Justin Baldoni's countersuit against 'It Ends With Us' co-star Blake Lively, her husband, Ryan Reynolds, and their publicist has been dropped by a judge, according to court documents. The judge also reportedly dropped Baldoni's $250 million lawsuit against The New York Times. Judge Lewis J. Liman granted a motion to drop the $400 million lawsuit, which alleged defamation and extortion by Lively and her husband. The judge said that Baldoni's team could amend part of the claims if they wanted, but they had to do so by June 23. Blake Lively withdraws emotional distress claims against Justin Baldoni Liman said that Baldoni's team had not alleged that Lively is responsible for any statements outside of her CRD complaint, which he said is privileged. This included therapy notes and information on her mental health providers. Liman wrote that Baldoni's motion to get Lively's medical information was denied 'based on (Lively's) representation that the relevant claims will be withdrawn.' Liman claimed that Lively didn't want to disclose information but wanted to keep her right to re-file her claims. However, the judge decided that Lively 'cannot have it both ways,' and he closed the claims. Lively's attorneys will now not be able to use evidence regarding her alleged emotional distress.
