Armed Forces called in to help evacuate Pukatawagan as wildfire threatens airport

The Canadian Armed Forces were called in to help evacuate a northern Manitoba First Nation community in the path of a wildfire Friday morning. Speaking at a Friday afternoon news conference, Premier Wab Kinew said the province received multiple calls for help from Mathias Colomb Cree Nation (Pukatawagan) as a wildfire was closing in on the community. 'The situation was very, very dangerous and scary,' Kinew said. The premier said the fire near the community was threatening the airport, resulting in 'a desperate need to accelerate the movement of people out of that community.' Canadian Armed Forces helicopters were brought in to perform reconnaissance work and to help evacuate residents through the day Friday. Kinew said the airport was not damaged by the fire, but heavy smoke is complicating emergency efforts in the area. The fire near Pukatawagan is 9,785 hectares and still out-of-control, according to Manitoba's fire map.

Grand Valley commemorates deadly tornado 40 years later

Damage from the tornado in Grand Valley, Ont., on Fri., May 31, 1985. The community in Grand Valley, Ont. is holding an afternoon of commemoration on Saturday for the 40th anniversary of the 1985 Grand Valley Tornado. On May 31st of that year, a series of tornadoes ripped through the farmlands that surround the Greater Toronto Area, including in the counties of Bruce, Dufferin, and Simcoe. Grand Valley was among the communities that encountered an EF4-level tornado. At around 4:15 p.m., nearly 400 kilometre-an-hour winds ravaged through the town, resulting in two local deaths and widespread damage. On Saturday, the town scheduled a full afternoon of formalities to commemorate the events of that tragic day, including a processional along Main Street, guest speakers, emergency management displays, and the sharing of historical footage. The two Grand Valley deaths were among the 12 lives in total that were lost that day. Eight of the deaths were in Barrie, which included four children, and the two other deaths were in Tottenham. More than 150 were injured in total. The structural destruction in Grand Valley totalled 65 homes, five barns, three churches and two commercial buildings, as well as the town's library and town hall. Environment Canada later confirmed that the series of tornadoes amounted to 14, making it one of the worst tornado disasters in Canadian history. With files from CTV's Kim Phillips.

Air quality alert in effect for majority of Manitoba

A haze covering Winnipeg taken on May 31, 2025. (Gary Robson/CTV News Winnipeg) Wildfire smoke has prompted Environment Canada to issue air quality alerts for the majority of Manitoba, with smoke causing or expected to cause poor air quality and reduced visibility. As of Saturday morning, nearly 20 locations in the province are under an air quality warning which includes communities such as Flin Flon and Bissett that have been ordered to evacuate due to wildfire danger. 'Warm and dry conditions continue support wildfire activity this weekend,' states the air quality warning. 'The smoke will linger for a prolonged period near the source region of the fires.' Residents impacted by the air quality warning are advised to limit time outdoors and cancel outdoor activities. Environment Canada states that everyone's health is at risk during heavy smoke conditions, regardless of age or health status. As of 10 a.m. on Saturday, the air quality health index in Brandon indicates a very high health risk (10+). In Winnipeg, Saturday morning's air quality health index is 3, though the forecast maximum for Saturday and Sunday indicates that a very high health risk (10+) is possible. The last air quality health index available for Flin Flon, a city of roughly 5,000 that was placed under evacuation last Wednesday, reported a high health risk (9) last night.
