'The smell in the town centre is pungent. People don't realise they're funding organised crime'
The panel was updated on various police developments by the crime commissioner, which included Project Draig, a campaign 'raising awareness and capturing the response to SOC (serious and organised crime)'. But meeting chairwoman Patricia Astbury spoke on the subject and said she was 'frustrated' by cannabis users, whom she accused of funding serious and organised crime through drug use.
Ms Astbury also used the streets of Ruthin as an example of how 'pungent' the smell of the drug is in some North Wales towns. 'I don't think communities out there really understand how this SOC (serious and organised crime) can impact upon our lives,' she said. 'It is Insidious, isn't it, what happens? And I listen, and I don't get why they don't understand how, for example, cannabis - the use of cannabis – that's all connected, isn't it? And that just seems to be an accepted part of life now, that you can go down a street, and you hear people in Ruthin saying the smell of cannabis is strong.'
She added: 'I know local policing are doing something about that. They've just done an exercise in the south of the county, haven't they, where you started off in Ruthin, and that was one of the things people were saying. 'You walk up the streets and the smell is pungent.' And people just don't understand the impact when they are using cannabis, for example, that they are actually funding serious, organised crime eventually. I know it is a small thing, but I get cross sometimes. Why don't you understand what you're doing? It is frustrating.'
Mr Dunbobbin responded: 'Not long after the results of the election last year, and I was spoken to by various media outlets. They said, 'What is your main priority for North Wales?' And my answer was serious, organised crime because everything else intrinsically links into that, with so many things, so many different strands. I know that is really much a priority of this force, with the chief constable there.'
'We've got Operation Draig (Project Draig), isn't it, chief? So there is a real emphasis on tackling that issue.'

Richard Walker told Channel 5 News that with the Deeside-based business suffering substantial losses from theft, the grocery chain will offer £1 to any shopper who spots stealing in their premises. The chief executive explained that shoplifting has become a major issue for the firm, costing them "over £20 million a year". The British grocery retailer runs more than 970 outlets across the UK, including 66 locations in Wales. To receive the £1 reward, shoppers must be members of the supermarket's loyalty programme and possess an Iceland Bonus Card, reports Wales Online. Walker informed Channel 5 News: "I'd like to announce that we will give £1 to any customer who points out a shoplifter. The Iceland chief executive also stated that theft "keeps prices from being lowered" as it costs the company millions of pounds each year. He explained: "We'd like out customers to help lower our prices even more by pointing out shoplifters and then we'll give them a quid back." This follows the supermarket's introduction of facial recognition technology at its checkouts in June this year, as part of measures to tackle theft and protect staff from violence. The system involves cameras scanning the faces of customers and cross-referencing them with a database of known troublemakers, subsequently alerting store employees if there's a match. If the trials are successful, Iceland may consider rolling out this technology across all its stores. Facewatch is also utilised by several other retailers including Home Bargains, B&M, House of Fraser, Sports Direct, and Evans Cycles. Seagull 'kicked to death for taking fish off a plate' in Gwynedd resort

More info A seagull was kicked to death after "taking fish off a plate" outside a chippy in Gwynedd. RSPCA Cymru said they were investigating after the gull died on Marine Parade in Barmouth on Monday, August 4. The charity said at around 1pm, the gull was kicked after "he had taken fish off a plate and dropped it on the floor". The gull hit a parked car, before dying. RSPCA animal rescue officer Julia Dalgleish said she had been making enquiries in the local area after the incident was reported to the charity. North Wales driver who claimed electric Jaguar 'went rogue' on motorway appears in court

More info A motorist who claimed his luxury electric car accelerated 'on its own' on the motorway has made his first appearance in court charged with fraud. Nathan Owen, 32, from Prestatyn, called police for assistance on March 6 last year, to report his Jaguar I-Pace vehicle was speeding out of control and the brakes were not working. Officers scrambled to intercept the vehicle, which had travelled along the eastbound carriageways of the M57, M62 and M58 motorways in Merseyside before it was eventually brought to a stop. On Wednesday, Owen attended Liverpool Magistrates' Court where he indicated not guilty pleas to dangerous driving, intentionally or recklessly causing a public nuisance and two counts of fraud. On the fraud matters it is alleged he made a false representation to CA Auto Finance that the Jaguar was faulty and was accelerating on its own with the brakes unresponsive. Prosecutor Renee Southern told the court that it was the Crown's case that the defendant had 'persistently and dishonestly' claimed the vehicle was defective. She said Owen wanted to 'get rid' of the vehicle and thus avoid further payments totalling £4,426 to the finance company. Police made manoeuvres to box the Jaguar in, which led to motorway closures and substantial delays, the court heard. Owen, of The Grove, was released on unconditional bail to attend a further hearing at Liverpool Crown Court on September 10, when he is expected to enter formal pleas. Previously, he had reportedly said he was on his way home from work on the first day of his job as a children's support worker and feared he would die or kill someone else during the journey on March 6.
