An invitation-only event, it's one of the 'big five' major international film festivals, along with Venice, Berlin, Toronto and Sundance, and is seen as one of the first indicators as to what films could be in the running for an Oscar.
The last few years, for example, have seen the likes of Parasite, Triangle of Sadness, Anatomy of a Fall and Anora lauded at Cannes then go on to make a run for the major Academy Awards.
A number of awards are handed out each year by a jury of actors and filmmakers - with the Palme d'Or given to the best film to appear in competition.
As well as the main festival, there are numerous smaller satellite festivals, featuring every genre of movie, as well as big out-of-competition premieres, which this year saw Tom Cruise attend with his latest Mission: Impossible film.
He's just one of the big stars who walked the red carpet - here he is, along with another 20 celebs.

Simon and Liam developed a close bond after first meeting on the X Factor in 2008. Although Liam only made it as far as the Judges' Houses, the teenager returned in 2010 where he was placed into the boy band One Direction. Simon was joined by Sinitta in both 2008 and 2010 to watch Liam perform at the 65-year-old's home, first as a solo artist and then with One Direction, with the five youngsters making an instant impression on the pair. Sinitta had first Liam as he appeared in the judges houses stage of X-Factor (Image: Eamonn M. Tragically, in October last year, Liam fell to his death at a Buenos Aires hotel after flying out to watch former bandmate Niall Horan in concert. Now, during a recent interview with Best magazine, Sinitta opened up about the heartbreak of learning of Liam's death. She said: "You never expect anyone younger than you to die. All I could think about was Cheryl and Bear." Managing to put her own grief to one side, her thoughts turned to Simon, as she recalled speaking to the inconsolable judge: "Later that day I reached out to Simon, and he was devastated. I hadn't heard him so upset since his mum died. He sobbed down the phone to me - it was hard to know what to say. It was brave of him to go to that funeral and comfort Liam's parents." Liam first appeared on X-Factor in 2008 (Image: Getty Images for Atlantis The Royal ) Simon and Sinitta first met in 1983 when Sinitta, then thought to have been 20 at the time, became his first signing as a record boss. The pair would go on to have a 30-year love affair that saw the couple repeatedly make up and break up. In 2004, Sinitta made her first appearance on the X Factor when she joined Simon at the Judges' Houses stage. She joined Simon in rejecting Liam in 2008 and recommending that he came back to the show at a later date. Two years later, she joined Simon at the Judges Houses' phase once again and this time decided to progress Liam and his new bandmates, One Direction, to the next stage of the show. As the 2025 UK summer festival season approaches, research has shown nearly half of music fans are not heading along this year. It comes after a study showed that 35% of those who are going had to put tickets on their credit card. So what festivals in the United Kingdom are, despite their price, value for money in 2025? We are still going through a cost-of-living crisis in 2025, where if many of us are looking to stump up a huge wad of cash for something, you best believe we want our money's worth. Whether it's subscription services, takeaway meals, concerts, or, on this occasion, the hallowed UK music festival; with prices as they are (even on the face value market) and so many options to choose from, you might be wondering where to go or what to do. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad A study commissioned by Intuit Credit Karma, which surveyed over 2,000 UK adults between May 13 and 16, 2025, found that over half (61%) of festival-goers believe that soaring ticket prices have gone too far – that's three of the five friends you're at the pub with while reading this. As more people are struggling to pull money together to attend UK festivals, what five are considered the best value-for-money in 2025? | Getty Images/Canva More than 35% of those surveyed admitted that they've dipped into their savings in order to get a festival ticket, while 18% said they put the tickets on their credit card, and only 12% revealed they used payment plans offered by a number of festivals this summer. This has led to the damning statistic from the survey that almost half (49%) of those questioned stated they were attending fewer festivals this year – or worse, none at all. So maybe it would help to know which festival this year is set to give you more bang for your buck? Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad To determine which festivals offer the best value for money, Credit Karma developed the Festi-Value Index. This index objectively assesses a festival's worth by taking into account the average Spotify monthly plays of its top 50 performing artists and the total number of festival days, then dividing this combined score by the overall ticket cost. So which music festival in 2025, despite its cost, is proving to be worth the hard-earned money forked over? The model and her siblings Sean, Ruby, Renee, and Liam surprised their famous dad on stage at the ceremony as he was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award. Kimberly announced in March that she was pregnant with her second child, which will be her famous father's fifth grandchild. Los Angeles based Kimberly is already a mum to 13-year-old daughter Delilah Genoveva Stewart, who she shares with her ex-flame Benicio del Toro. She looked radiant in a figure-hugging black dress in a snap shared on Instagram as she joined her family at the star-studded event at BleauLive Theater at Fontainebleau Las Vegas on Monday. Kimberly did not reveal who the father of the baby was, only that she was expecting a son. Singing icon Rod was so shocked to see his family at Monday's ceremony that he dropped an F-bomb that was edited out of the broadcast. 'I'm so f***ing overwhelmed that you're here,' he said lovingly to his kids, according to reporter at the ceremony. However, the version that aired on CBS featured a clumsy cut away from Stewart during his cursing to a bizarre shot of audience members, who were holding up their phones to film his speech. Instead of beeping the profanity, CBS appeared to just snip out the offending word, resulting in a jarring return to his speech mid-word. Rod said he was 'absolutely flabbergasted' because he had no idea that his children were going to be attending the ceremony, much less giving him a warm introduction. 'I thought you had recorded it earlier!' he said of their introduction.
