Colorado Avalanche defenseman Cale Makar won his second Norris Trophy on Wednesday, taking a step toward cementing himself as the dominant blueliner of this NHL generation.
Makar bested Quinn Hughes of the Vancouver Canucks and the Columbus Blue Jackets' Zach Werenski in a vote by select members of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association. It is Makar's second Norris Trophy victory and first since 2022.

Only Erik Karlsson, a three-time winner now with the Pittsburgh Penguins, has earned more Norris Trophies among active defensemen than Makar.
The 26-year-old Makar has been a finalist every season this decade. Though Hughes, the Norris winner in 2024, figures to forge a fierce rivalry with him in the coming seasons, Makar could challenge to join a select group of four players to win the Norris Trophy at least four times.
This season, Makar's sixth with the Colorado Avalanche, harkened to when 1980s defensemen such as Paul Coffey and Ray Bourque regularly posted eye-popping offensive statistics. Makar led defensemen in each of the major offensive categories with 30 goals, 62 assists, and 92 points in 2024-25, finishing in overall scoring.

Only nine defensemen have scored at least 30 goals in a regular season. Makar was the first since the Washington Capitals' Mike Green in 2008-09.
The James Norris Memorial Trophy is annually awarded 'to the defensive player who demonstrates throughout the season the greatest all-around ability in the position,' according to its criteria. It was first handed out in 1953 by Norris' four children in memory of their late father, who owned the Detroit Red Wings from 1932-52.

Skubal throws 7 shutout innings, Meadows homers as Tigers beat Orioles 4-1

BALTIMORE — Tarik Skubal pitched seven shoutout innings, Parker Meadows hit a three-run homer and the Detroit Tigers beat the Baltimore Orioles 4-1 Thursday night. Dillon Dingler also homered for the Tigers, who rebounded from a 10-1 defeat on Wednesday night to win the deciding matchup of the three-game series. Showing the form that enabled him to unanimously win the 2024 AL Cy Young Award, Skubal (7-2) allowed three hits and permitted just one runner past second base. The lefty struck out six, walked two and lowered his ERA to a sparkling 1.99. American League-leading Detroit scored all its runs in the fourth inning against Dean Kremer (5-7). Dingler hit a drive to center that cleared the wall and the glove of Colton Cowser, who was shaken up from colliding with the barrier. The next two batters singled before Meadows hit his first homer of the season, a drive deep into the right-field seats. Kremer was originally slated to start, but interim manager Tony Mansolino opted instead to use Keegan Akin as an opener. Kremer entered in the second and gave up four runs and five hits in seven innings. Baltimore's lone run came on an eighth-inning homer by Dylan Carlson off reliever Tommy Kahnle. Will Vest pitched the ninth for his 12th save. Meadows fell into an 0-2 hole, then hit a foul ball and took a pitch before launching a four-seam fastball into the right-field seats. With Skubal on the mound, the 4-0 lead was essentially insurmountable. In 12 starts since April 2, Skubal is 7-0 with 101 strikeouts and five walks. In addition, he's given up just one earned run in his last four outings. Tigers: Following this unusually brief three-game road trip, the Tigers return home to face the Cincinnati Reds on Friday night. Orioles: Charlie Morton (2-7, 6.59 ERA) starts against the visiting Los Angeles Angels on Friday night in the opener of a three-game set. ___ AP MLB:

NHL rumors: Insider sheds light on Sam Bennett's future with Florida Panthers ahead of NHL free agency

The Florida Panthers reached the Stanley Cup Final for the third consecutive season with the help of forward Sam Bennett. With Florida attempting to become the league's newest dynasty, there have been questions about whether or not Bennett will even hit NHL free agency. James Mirtle of The Athletic writes that no one he's spoken to around the League expects Bennett to be available this offseason, with a new deal likely to be worked out with Florida before he becomes an unrestricted free agent. Both forwards were expected to be highly sought after, especially by clubs seeking veterans with ample playoff experience. The 6-foot-1 center has been productive throughout the playoffs, heading into Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Finals with the fifth-most points (19) in hockey this postseason. Selected by the Calgary Flames with the fourth overall pick in the 2014 NHL Draft, Bennett has contributed 3 goals already in the Stanley Cup Finals. With the NHL salary cap increasing next season to $95.5 million, per ESPN, Bennett is expected to receive a deal worth at least $8 million annually. As of now, 29 centers carry an AAV of $8-plus million for the 2025-'26 campaign. One thing Florida is likely aware of is the potential bidding war that Bennett's camp can use as leverage in contract negotiations. TSN's Pierre LeBrun recently suggested there could be multiple teams willing to offer Bennett $10-plus million annually if he reaches the open market. Panthers' defenseman Aaron Ekblad and winger Brad Marchand are also poised to become UFAs on July 1. Marchand has stated that he's open to re-signing with Florida, but the club will likely prioritize Eklbad and Bennett following the Stanley Cup Final. Related Headlines

Colorado adds former SEC running back to boost rushing attack

Colorado adds former SEC running back to boost rushing attack On the same day that Colorado officially lost its leading rusher to an SEC program, Deion Sanders and the Buffs landed an experienced running back to their roster. According to 247Sports, former Coastal Carolina and Mississippi State running back Simeon Price committed to Colorado. Last season with the Chanticleers, Price accumulated 143 yards of offense on 46 touches in nine games. Price began his career at Mississippi State, playing 24 games for the Bulldogs. He redshirted in 2021 but led the team with 68 rushing yards on seven attempts in the 2023 ReliaQuest Bowl. Price was a top 100 Florida recruit in 2021 and held several offers from top schools, including Oklahoma and Tennessee. His recruiting pedigree was high, and he will be tasked with living up to that standard during his final season of eligibility at Colorado. Colorado's rushing attack struggled mightily in 2024, finishing last in the Big 12 with just 847 yards and an average of only 2.5 yards per carry. Price joins a running back room featuring sophomore Micah Welch, junior Dallan Hayden and transfer DeKalon Taylor as the only suitable options. It seems likely that Price will get a shot at contributing from the get-go. Follow Charlie Strella on X, Threads and Instagram.
