Uttarakhand: Pushkar Kumbh draws thousands to Keshav Prayag

People gathered in large numbers on Sunday to bathe in the Pushkar Kumbh , which is being organised at Keshav Prayag near Mana, the border village of Chamoli district in Uttarakhad, after a period of 12 years.According to the Uttarakhand CMO release, thousands of devotees have so far taken a dip in the holy waters of the Alaknanda and Saraswati rivers. This year, the Pushkar Kumbh is being organised from May 14 to May 26.From dawn to dusk, the ghats of Keshav Prayag resound with bhajans and kirtans.This fair, organised every 12 years at Keshav Prayag, the confluence of the Alaknanda and Saraswati rivers, is associated with great saints like Maharishi Vedvyas, Ramanujacharya, and Madhvacharya. It is particularly notable that most people from South India come to bathe during this occasion, the CMO said in a statement.On Wednesday, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami took to social media Xto post that Pushkar Kumbh started after 12 years in Mana-- India's first village near the Badrinath Dham.He further stated that the festival taking place at the holy confluence of the Alaknanda and Saraswati rivers was a living example of the divinity of eternal traditions."Pushkar Kumbh has started after 12 years in Mana, India's first village near Shri Badrinath Dham. This great festival of faith at the holy confluence of Alaknanda and Saraswati rivers is a living example of the divinity of our eternal traditions," the post read.The CM extended his greetings to the devotees visiting Devbhoomi for Pushkar Kumbh."On this auspicious occasion, hearty welcome and greetings from the State Government to all the devotees who have come to Devbhoomi for Pushkar Kumbh," he said.Earlier, District Magistrate Sandeep Tiwari informed that the pedestrian path has been improved for the Pushkar Kumbh, which is organised at Keshav Prayag in Mana village."Signboards in various languages have been installed here for the convenience of the devotees on the pedestrian path. Along with this, police have been deployed on the footpath for the smooth conduct of Kumbh. SDRF jawans have also been deployed on the Sangam coast," Tiwari added.He further said that the tehsil administration has been instructed to do regular monitoring to keep the arrangements for the Pushkar Kumbh smooth. According to religious tradition, when Jupiter enters Gemini in 12 years, Pushkar Kumbh is held in Keshav Prayag located at the confluence of Alaknanda and Saraswati rivers in Mana village. Vaishnav followers of South India mainly participate in this event .According to Hindu religious beliefs, Maharishi Ved Vyas composed the mythological text of Hinduism, Mahabharata, while doing penance in Keshav Prayag. It is also believed that Ramanujacharya and Madhvacharya, attained knowledge from Goddess Saraswati at this place.According to religious tradition, when the planet Jupiter enters the Gemini sign once in 12 years, the Pushkar Kumbh is held at Keshav Prayag, the confluence of the Alaknanda and Saraswati rivers in Mana village.

The operation comes as part of the ongoing coordinated relief and evacuation efforts being undertaken in view of recent adverse conditions that have disrupted normal road connectivity and access to the region. The helicopter sortie began this morning from the Pakyong Greenfield Airport, with the first sortie taking off towards Chaten to initiate the evacuation process. The State Government has reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of all citizens in affected regions. Rescue and relief operations were being conducted in North Sikkim, following recent floods in the region. Meanwhile, the Sikkim government is still closely monitoring the overall situation in the region and is providing all necessary support and assistance to those affected. Earlier on Friday, in a major relief operation, all stranded tourists were successfully evacuated from Chaten, one of the worst-hit areas in North Sikkim, following recent landslides and flash floods. Mangan District Collector Anant Jain confirmed the evacuation. DC Anant Jain praised the joint efforts of the district administration, military, paramilitary forces, and local communities for their swift and coordinated response. "Our priority was to ensure the safety of every stranded individual. We thank the Indian Air Force and all ground teams for their relentless service," Jain said. The final phase of the operation involved Indian Air Force (IAF) helicopters airlifting the remaining 63 tourists from Chaten on Thursday, with follow-up sorties resuming on Friday morning as weather conditions improved. The operation was carried out in coordination with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Indian Army, Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), Border Roads Organisation (BRO), and local administration. Earlier in the week, more than 1,600 tourists were rescued by road from Lachung and Lachen valleys in a massive ground operation led by DC Jain. The tourists, including several elderly individuals and children, were safely escorted through challenging terrain and intermittent weather disturbances. Several days of heavy rainfall have triggered landslides, mudslides, flash floods, and rockfalls in many parts of the state.

Etched deep into India's cultural consciousness, Gaya Ji commands international attention for more than one reason. Considered the holy abode of Lord Vishnu, it is here, according to the ancient epic Ramayana, that Lord Rama, the incarnation of Vishnu, performed the pinddaan ritual for his father, King Dasharatha. Legends place this city's existence as far back as the Treta Yuga, several millennia ago. Renowned globally for the Pitripaksh Mela, a fortnight-long observance held annually during the Krishna Paksha of the Ashwin month (as per the Hindu calendar), Gaya Ji draws lakhs of pilgrims seeking to honour their ancestors. It is also Bihar's only city with international flight operations and is celebrated for its iconic local sweet, tilkut. Gaya Ji is a land of stirring tales, none more inspiring than that of Dashrath Manjhi, the legendary 'Mountain Man' who, with nothing but a hammer and chisel, carved a 360-foot-long, 30-foot-wide road through a hill over 22 relentless years. The city also takes pride in producing top-tier engineering talent, especially from Patwa Toli, a locality known for its weaver families and academic ambition, often sending students to the prestigious IITs. The spiritual heart of Gaya Ji beats within the sacred walls of Vishnupad Temple and extends to the nearby UNESCO World Heritage site, the Mahabodhi Mahavihara in Bodh Gaya. The former is a revered destination for Hindu devotees while the latter is a spiritual beacon for Buddhists worldwide. The city's significance is reflected in the rising tide of pilgrims and tourists. According to Gaya district administration, at least 23 lakh pilgrims performed pinddaan in Gaya Ji during the most recent Pitripaksh, a sharp increase from 15 lakh in 2023 and 13 lakh in 2022. According to the state tourism department, around 40 lakh domestic and international guests visited the Mahabodhi Mahavihara in 2024 alone. Beyond its spiritual magnetism, Gaya Ji is also set for a dynamic transformation. With a 1,670-acre integrated manufacturing cluster under development in Dobhi block, the city is gearing up to mark its presence on the industrial map with ambitions likened to Noida. Adding to its strategic importance, the Amritsar-Delhi-Kolkata Industrial Corridor (AKIC) will pass through Gaya Ji, linking it with six other states – Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jharkhand and West Bengal. Looking ahead, the completion of the Vishnupad Corridor and Mahabodhi Corridor, announced in the Union Budget, will further elevate the twin cities of Gaya Ji and Bodh Gaya as hubs of pilgrimage and tourism. With this anticipated surge in footfall and business activity, the local economy is expected to flourish, bringing with it increased employment and prosperity. Pramod Kumar Sinha, a Vaastu and numerology expert and vice-president of the All India Federation of Astrologers' Societies (AIFAS), offered a metaphysical perspective. "Study of the new name Gaya Ji shows that the religious, spiritual, academic reputation of the city and the mental progress of people living here will increase. There will be an increase in the fame and popularity of the city in the country and abroad. There will be opportunities to achieve rapid progress in mental, intellectual and economic progress of the people living here," he said.
