Penn Station revamp plans proposes moving Madison Square Garden
MANHATTAN, N.Y. (PIX11) — Penn Station is a busy place.
Grand Penn Community Alliance has unveiled new plans for the area around and under Penn Station and they're heading to Washington, D.C.

The group says they're scheduling meetings with federal transit agencies in the coming weeks. The group is made up of engineers, architects, and planners. They call this the ' first outside proposal to be formally submitted.'
It includes a new train hall, a new public park, and double the number of platforms. This proposal requires Madison Square Garden to move across 7th Avenue to the open lot formerly the home of the Hotel Pennsylvania.

MSG has not commented on the recent plans. Supporters of this proposal are calling on deal-makers in the city and Washington.
Grand Penn Chief Architect Alexandros Washburn gave a presentation and took questions.

'Something better can be done. We don't have to accept the status quo,' he said.
Other proposals are also circulating including a plan from ReThinkPennNYC. That proposal does not require tearing down apartments.
Last week, NY Assemblymember Tony Simone announced a plan focused on housing. He's calling on the state to come back to the table.
The state of New York had been working on plans for years with developers that included office towers to finance the program. The MTA has transformed the concourse and opened new access.
Governor Kathy Hochul paused the next part of the discussion in 2023. The administration continues to work on advancing work and development at the site.
'Governor Hochul is laser focused on fixing Penn Station now. The railroad partners are in the process of completing preliminary design for the Penn Reconstruction project and concurrently soliciting input from community stakeholders through the Station Working Advisory Group,' wrote a spokesperson.
At the completion of that process, the governor expects an official request for proposals to be released. They're encouraging the private sector to and concepts.

Queens public school student detained by ICE, second in NYC: Senator

RIDGEWOOD, Queens (PIX11) — A second high school student at a New York City public school has been detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, according to New York State Senator Mike Gianaris and State Assemblymember Claire Valdez. The elected officials shared word of the student's detainment in social media posts on Friday. The 11th-grade student from Grover Cleveland High School in Ridgewood, Queens was said to have been apprehended in a courthouse after a routine immigration hearing, Sen. Gianaris shared. More Local News 'A high schooler in my neighborhood has been taken into custody by ICE at an immigration court check-in. His family has not heard from him in days, and has no idea where he is being held,' said Valdez. Sen. Gianaris, Assemblymember Valdez, and Councilmember Jen Gutiérrez have called for the student's immediate release and for him to be reunited with his family. The 11th grader marks the second NYC public school student to be detained by ICE in the last two weeks. The agency previously took a 20-year-old student named Dylan into custody on May 21. The Venezuelan native was a Bronx high school student who was going through the legal process of seeking asylum. Immigrant advocates and elected officials have also reported that more than a dozen other people have been detained by ICE agents while attending immigration hearings at 201 Varick Street. PIX11 News reached out to NYC Public Schools and ICE for a statement but did not hear back at the time of publishing. Andrew Cuomo gets mayor endorsement from former critic: ‘Toughness to lead New York'
NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) — A whirlwind week in the race for New York City Mayor ended with a dramatic political about-face and a chaotic rally ending with an arrest. State Senator Jessica Ramos, once a vocal critic of former Governor Andrew Cuomo, announced Friday she is endorsing him in the Democratic mayoral primary. The surprise move comes despite years of public criticism of Cuomo by Ramos over issues ranging from sexual harassment allegations to the state's handling of nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic. More Local News Ramos said in the end, her decision to endorse Cuomo came down to the looming threat of President Trump, and his experience as compared to the other leading contender in the race Zohran Mamdani. 'Only one of them has the experience and toughness and the knowledge to lead New York through what's about to come, and that's Andrew Cuomo,' Ramos said to loud applause at a rally. Just six weeks ago, Ramos openly questioned Cuomo's mental acuity. At the time, a spokesperson for Cuomo fired back by implying Ramos was drinking too much. The Senator has also recently failed to qualify for the second Democratic mayoral debate and was passed over for an endorsement by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Cuomo downplayed any recent Ramos criticism: 'You take everything with a grain of salt. I've said things about opponents during campaigns. You get caught up in the rhetoric and energy of the moment. That's the nature of the business.' Uptown, Mamdani held a rally of his own that was disrupted by a supporter of former President Donald Trump. The man confronted Mamdani, accusing him of being insufficiently supportive of Israel and Jewish people. Police said 55-year-old Raul Rivera was arrested and charged with assault after allegedly biting one of Mamdani's volunteers who tried to intervene. Amidst the commotion, Mamdani took aim at Ramos' endorsement of Cuomo. 'Andrew Cuomo is the best example of leadership that has failed New Yorkers,' he said.
