AMMAN — Director-General of the Vocational Training Corporation (VTC) Ahmad Gharaibeh said that the corporation's mission aims to create job opportunities and employ alumni, regardless of their ages or academic backgrounds.
Gharaibeh noted that 2024 was "exceptional" in the VTC's success story, as the number of its graduates exceeded 12,000 trainees, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.
He added that this achievement came despite the fact that the capacity of the VTC-affiliated institutes stands at 8,000 trainees.
The VTC seeks to accommodate the "largest" possible number of trainees by providing some specialisations in two morning and evening shifts in 17 institutes, Gharaibeh said.
The director-general noted that the number of trainees currently enrolled in the VTC's training activities is 9,500 people in vocational training programmes and 1,500 others in vocational education activities.
Referring to last year's VTC expansion, he said that the current number of institutes now reach 30 across the Kingdom.
Gharaibeh said that 62 per cent of the VTC's graduates obtained job opportunities and have social security subscriptions, 53 per cent of whom work in their specialisations and 9 per cent joined other fields.
He said that 19 per cent of graduates work in the informal economy, indicating that some 80 per cent of the VTC's graduates have sources of income.
Gharaibeh stressed that the VTC works in line with the strategic axis in the Economic Modernisation Vision, which includes six priorities for the vocational and technical training and education sector.

Jordan's Leather and Garment Industry Exports Reach 90 Countries Worldwide - Jordan News

Jordan's Leather and Garment Industry Exports Reach 90 Countries Worldwide Jordan's leather and garment industry — the oldest in the region — has significantly expanded its export footprint, now reaching around 90 countries globally. This growth reflects the sector's competitiveness and high quality standards. اضافة اعلان The industry, which dates back to the establishment of the first tannery in 1921, has received considerable support from the Jordanian state under the leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah II. This support, along with Jordan's trade agreements with major global trade blocs, has made the sector attractive to foreign investors. Over the past decade, the sector has seen a remarkable transformation, with investments increasing by 150%, from $420 million to over $1 billion today. Jordan's Economic Modernization Vision has set ambitious goals for the sector, including: Increasing employment levels Raising value-added by 10% annually to reach approximately $1.8 billion Boosting production from $5.5 billion to $8.8 billion by 2033 Attracting $3.1 billion in new investments in the coming years The number of operational enterprises has surged from 600 at the end of the 20th century to 1,000 today, with production branches spread across several governorates. In 2024, the sector achieved a record-high export growth of over 24% compared to 2023 — the highest since 2010 — reaching $2.4 billion, which accounts for 21% of total industrial exports. Eng. Ihab Qadri, representative of the leather and garment industries sector at the Jordan Chamber of Industry, told the Jordan News Agency (Petra): 'This growth clearly reflects the sector's development and its regained momentum in foreign markets, despite the regional and global economic challenges over the past two years.' He attributed this growth mainly to the gradual recovery in demand from the U.S. market, which accounts for 80% of the sector's exports, along with export expansion into European markets, particularly the Netherlands and Belgium. Qadri emphasized that the sector is entering a promising phase, and stakeholders must build on recent achievements by boosting product competitiveness and diversifying exports into non-traditional markets. He also noted that the sector still has untapped export potential worth over $752 million, according to World Trade Center estimates — a key factor in achieving the ambitious goals set in the Economic Modernization Vision. Qadri highlighted that the sector holds the largest share of employment opportunities, with over 96,000 workers, an 8% growth, of whom 31% are Jordanians. The Vision also sees the sector playing a vital role in job creation, with a target to generate 149,000 job opportunities out of the one million total aimed for in the coming years. Qadri also pointed to progress on the establishment of a fully integrated industrial cluster for the leather and garment sector, supported by the International Finance Corporation (IFC). The project has reached an advanced stage, with feasibility studies completed and work underway to finalize incentive packages and determine the geographic location. Promotional campaigns are also being prepared to attract investment and Jordanian labor. The establishment of this integrated industrial cluster is one of the key initiatives supporting the Economic Modernization Vision, especially in light of challenges such as the scarcity of raw materials, which represent nearly 60% of total production costs. Qadri explained that the cluster aims to fill supply chain gaps and reduce delivery times, enhancing the sector's ability to expand globally and increase exports. He emphasized that sustained progress in the sector depends on its ability to adopt technological advancements, implement sustainable practices, and enhance integration with supporting sectors like transport and logistics — all of which would help position Jordan as a competitive industrial and export hub in the region. Qadri concluded by stressing the importance of effectively implementing the initiatives outlined in the Economic Modernization Vision, particularly through the upcoming sector-specific strategy under the national industrial policy. This strategy aims to enhance the sector's competitiveness, productivity, value-added, and product/export diversification through public-private collaboration. (Petra)

Jordanian apparel industry drives economic growth, green shift

Ehab Qadri, representative of the sector at JCI says that the apparel sector's export value exceeded $2.5 billion in 2024, accounting for 26 per cent of Jordan's total industrial exports (Petra photo) AMMAN — The Jordan Chamber of Industry (JCI) has highlighted the leather and garments industries sector as one of the national industries leading in export and production, attributing its success to 'supportive' political will and continuous economic reforms. Ehab Qadri, representative of the sector at JCI, said the sector has become one of the main pillars of Jordanian industry. It now ranks first among export-oriented manufacturing industries, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported on Sunday. Qadri added that the sector's export value exceeded $2.5 billion in 2024, accounting for 26 per cent of Jordan's total industrial exports. Total production amounted to more than $3.2 billion. He noted that Jordan has become a strategic industrial base for exporting products to global markets, particularly the United States, benefiting from the free trade agreements signed by the Kingdom. Qadri emphasised that the sector is among the primary drivers of the Economic Modernisation Vision (EMV), launched by His Majesty King Abdullah in 2022. The EMV aims to increase the industry's contribution to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and create hundreds of thousands of quality jobs by 2033. He said companies in the sector are now working to shift towards higher value-added industries by promoting design, innovation, and the development of national brands. The sector is also moving towards sustainable production that considers environmental and social dimensions. As part of its partnerships, Qadri referred to the signing of a memorandum of understanding with the International Finance Corporation (IFC). The agreement aims to enhance productivity and adopt advanced manufacturing technologies. Qadri explained that the partnership includes initiatives to build institutional capacity, develop value chains, and promote compliance with international standards. These efforts will strengthen Jordan's position as a regional hub for advanced textile and leather industries. According to Qadri, the sector is a leader in human development, currently providing over 90,000 direct jobs. Women make up more than 67 per cent of its workforce. It is also regarded as one of the most supportive sectors for women's economic empowerment, particularly in governorates, productive branches, and industrial zones across the Kingdom. Qadri noted that the sector also appeals to Jordanian youth through specialised training programmes and job opportunities designed to align with the demands of the modern labour market. In line with the global shift towards a green economy, Qadri said major factories in the sector have begun to adopt environmental and social sustainability standards. He added that these standards include the use of solar energy, water treatment technologies, and commitment to responsible production practices, enhancing the competitiveness of Jordanian products in both European and US markets.
