Welsh coach gets new gig
Welsh rugby coach Gareth Baber has reportedly agreed to join Stade Nicois ahead of the new season, according to L'Equipe. The former Fiji Sevens coach previously played for Bristol and Dragons before moving into coaching, and will now aim to guide Nicois to promotion. He'll be supported by backs coach Barry Maddocks and forwards coach Emiliano Bergamaschi.
Current Ospreys and Wales fly-half Owen Williams is also joining, along with former Scarlets and current Bayonne number eight Uzair Cassiem.
Baber led the Fiji Sevens side to glory at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, which was followed by a short stint working with United Rugby Championship side Edinburgh Rugby.
Baber also previously worked at Cardiff Metropolitan University as Director of Rugby Systems. Sign up to Inside Welsh rugby on Substack to get exclusive news stories and insight from behind the scenes in Welsh rugby.

The 33-year-old fly-half is leaving Gloucester at the end of the current campaign and had been linked with moves to Leicester Tigers and Provence Rugby, with the latter being where ex-team-mate George North plays.
Gloucester have signed Ireland international and Leinster fly-half Ross Byrne ahead of the new season, and he'll be partnering up with Tomos Williams in the half-backs in 2025/2026.
Bayonne are favourites to sign Anscombe due to the fact veteran Camille Lopez is hanging up his boots at the end of the season. Currently on the books at the French club are former England star Manu Tuilagi and ex-Scarlets man Cassiem.
Nigel Owens makes return
Nigel Owens made his return to refereeing on Saturday afternoon.
The legendary official picked up the whistle again as Lampeter RFC took on London Welsh in a 150th anniversary match. Writing on social media ahead of the game, the Welshman said: "BREAKING NEWS: I'm back. After 4 years I am picking up the whistle again tomorrow for a special 150 years anniversary celebrating Lampeter RFC in their match versus London Welsh. Hope the legs will last the 80 mins."
It was a glorious day at Lampeter RFC's North Road fields with spectators lining the touchline. Owens and the players were welcomed onto the field by youth players as supporters clapped and took pictures of the famous referee.
The final score was 60-24 to Welsh, who played the second half with a side comprised of second and third-string players. The club described it as a "great day for all to celebrate" and it was "great having Nigel back from retirement for it as well."
The last time Owens refereed a match was France v Italy in the autumn internationals five years ago, which was also his 100th Test as a referee. Since putting down the whistle, Owens has worked as a mentor for new WRU referees, as well as a World Rugby expert. He spends much of his time on his farm out in west Wales.
Neath hammered 105-0 by Merthyr
Neath were put to the sword by champions Merthyr on Saturday afternoon, finishing 105-0.
It was the last game of the WRU Premiership season for the two teams, and was a jaw-dropping 66-0 at half-time. Merthyr ran in their tries with ease at The Wern and didn't take their foot off the gas in the second half.
A total of 16 tries were scored by Merthyr, with one of those a penalty try.
Neath went into the game in third place, but suffered the full wrath of the leaders.

The newly-crowned champions' performance paid testament to the fact they've lost only two games all season. They clinched the title with a 48-24 victory over Brecon recently, with Pontypridd's defeat to Ystrad Rhondda contributing to their glory.

Alan Sheehan provides Swansea City striker search update as boss makes transfer admission
Alan Sheehan provides Swansea City striker search update as boss makes transfer admission The club remain keen on adding a new striker to their ranks this summer having missed out on several options already Swansea City manager Alan Sheehan (Image: Getty Images) Alan Sheehan insists Swansea City won't panic in their search for a new striker this summer, and admits it's possible they may have to make the most of their current options. The Swans remain keen on adding more firepower to their ranks before the close of the transfer window, but have so far been unable to find a breakthrough in their search, having already brought nine players on board this summer. Richard Kone was the subject of an unsuccessful bid, while the club also failed in an attempt to bring Oli McBurnie back to the club on a free transfer. Both have since joined Queens Park Rangers and Hull City respectively. Sign up to our Swansea City newsletter here. It's understood the club also showed interest in FC Basel's Kevin Carlos and St Gallen's Willem Geubbels in recent weeks, but again both have moved to other clubs. City also saw a loan move for Villarreal's Karl Etta Eyong knocked back earlier in the summer, with the player now likely to be a regular for the La Liga outfit having started and scored on the opening day of the season. Interest in Hammarby's Jusef Erabi is also understood to have been ended, amid suggestions in the Swedish press that the Swans had previously seen a bid rejected. WalesOnline understands two further European options are being assessed, but it's possible their search could rumble on up until the end of the window, despite previous suggestions of an imminent breakthrough. "I don't think one is imminent," Sheehan said when quizzed on the latest situation. "But it's obviously one the club are looking at." The Swans boss does already have three options already on the books, with Wales international Liam Cullen seemingly his first choice as things stand, having started both of the club's opening two games of the season. "When we talk about potential players coming in, the first person I think of potentially is the nine that is playing in Liam Cullen, an absolute tireless worker for the team, somebody who's on my teamsheet more than he's not," Sheehan added. "He's a very, very valuable member that could potentially be more clinical at times. "But in terms of working for the team and what we're about and typifying what we want to be. He's absolutely wonderful. "He's a Welsh international, and (Craig) Bellamy plays him as well, and there's a reason for that. These are good players. "So when we talk about bringing players in and for competition, they have to be better than what we have. "Not just bringing in players that will appease people for two or three months and then six to nine months down the line, think that actually it wasn't the right one. Let's get the right one and it it's not available, we stick with what we have, and then we strengthen again. "That's a big shoutout to Culls really because he's doing such a wonderful job for the team, and he will score goals. I know that. "But in terms of his work ethic, how much he loves the football club, how he shows up, how he is with the detail every day. We're incredibly grateful to have people like him here." And despite clearly wanting another striker through the door, Sheehan admits there's a chance he may have to try and get the best out of those already in the building, with Cullen seemingly at the top of the pecking order - for the time being at least. "I don't believe in bringing in anybody just for the sake of it," he added. Sign up to the Swansea City WhatsApp service to get breaking news and top stories sent to your phone. "With Bobby (Wales), he's a player that's come down from Scotland. He's still a young lad. We gave him a run out against Crawley and obviously the program on how he develops and integrating him into the league. "With Vipi (Zan Vipotnik), he's had a number of appearances and starts under me. So players have had the opportunity to grab the shirt, and within that, Vipi hurt his toe in pre-season and he had a bit of disruptive pre-season. "He was meant to get more minutes against Lorient, and then against Exeter, so it's not been as consistent as we would have liked. Article continues below "There's other things behind the decisions, but now, with how he links up with play, Culls is the one with the shirt."

Andre Fabre delighted by Birr Castle's pacemaking turn
The master French trainer provided the five-year-old as a pacemaker for favourite and eventual winner Ombudsman, trained by John and Thady Gosden but in the same Godolphin ownership. Ridden by Robert Havlin, Birr Castle had them all on the stretch and at one stage held a huge advantage. Hot on the heels of 150-1 chance Qirat winning the Sussex Stakes, another huge shock briefly looked on the cards before he began to tire but to his credit he held on for third place, only beaten by the front two in the betting. 'He certainly added a bit of spice to the race! Nobody was expecting such a scenario,' said Fabre. 'He's not a bad horse. He had a quiet season last year, but he was affected by a virus. He has a good rating, he's Group-placed. 'It looked like he was 20 lengths clear and he was still a long way in front with two furlongs to run when Robert Havlin went into the middle of the track to let the others through, but they weren't there. 'If he hadn't done that he may have been second, but the winner was very impressive. He looks a very nice horse, he quickened so well from what was a slow pace for the rest.' He went on: 'It was just like what happened at Goodwood really, when the pacemaker won the Sussex Stakes. I was talking to John before the race and I said I wouldn't mind the same result and we nearly got it. 'Everybody was happy in the end – John, myself and Godolphin. It's just a shame for such a big race it did not attract more runners, that leads to pacemakers. With more runners you wouldn't need them. 'A good pacemaker is one who if you let him go he is good enough to win it, it happened at Goodwood and nearly happened at York.'

Ryan Reynolds urged to smash Wrexham wage structure and join transfer fight for 'dream' signing
Ryan Reynolds urged to smash Wrexham wage structure and join transfer fight for 'dream' signing Jamie Vardy has been without a club since leaving Leicester City at the end of last season, and Wrexham have been encouraged to make him their marquee signing this summer Wrexham owners Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds have been encouraged to offer Jamie Vardy a generous financial package (Image: Robbie Jay Barratt - AMA/Getty Images) Wrexham have been encouraged to smash their salary cap to land Jamie Vardy. The former England international has been courted by several clubs following his departure from Leicester City at the conclusion of last season, with Everton, Celtic and Rangers among those showing interest. Serie A title holders Napoli are one of the most recent sides reportedly weighing up a swoop for the 38-year-old frontman, who netted 200 goals in 500 appearances for the Foxes. However, with less than a fortnight remaining in the summer transfer window, Vardy continues to be without a club. Championship newcomers Wrexham were amongst the first sides rumoured to be monitoring his situation following their promotion from League One in April. The North Wales outfit's former boss Dean Saunders believes they ought to take the gamble by launching a bid for Vardy. The ex-Liverpool and Aston Villa forward suggested Vardy's salary demands might prove a potential obstacle in luring him to Wrexham. Yet, with the financial backing of Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac supporting them, Saunders considers it a dream move worth pursuing. Speaking to OLBG, he said: "Jamie Vardy, he's 38, but he's still quick. You never lose your eye for a goal, ever. Even now I can't play, but my football brain's still there, I just can't run anymore. Well Vardy can still run and his football brain is still the same. Leicester City legend Jamie Vardy is still a free agent and has previously been linked with Wrexham (Image:) "To score as many goals as he scored, you've got to anticipate before everybody else where the ball's going to go. And he does. So I'd like to see Wrexham sign Jamie Vardy if they could. "Obviousl,y I think his last wages was probably £150,000 a week, so they're about £130,000 short. But you never know at his age, you might just want to be part of it for two years, to get him to 39. I still think he's a good player. I still think he'd do a job in the Championship." Wrexham have shown little restraint when it comes to investing heavily in transfer fees during the summer window. The Red Dragons have shattered their club record on three separate occasions, with the largest sum paid for Ipswich and Wales forward Nathan Broadhead, who arrived in a deal reportedly valued at up to £10million. One advantage of a potential swoop for Vardy would be his status as a free agent, possibly enabling greater investment in wages. It wouldn't mark the first occasion Wrexham have attempted to secure a major signing during the current window either. The ambitious outfit previously pursued former Manchester United star Christian Eriksen. While they were ultimately unsuccessful, the Danish playmaker's representative Martin Schoots described Wrexham as a "hugely impressive project." Director Humphrey Ker responded to rumours surrounding the club's supposed interest in Vardy back in May. Speaking on The Chris Moyles Show on Radio X, he maintained at the time that they were not pursuing a move for the striker. Sign up to our newsletter! That was sparked by his wife, Rebekah Vardy, who posted a photo of their children wearing the club's kits on social media. However, these rumours were subsequently dismissed, leaving Vardy's next career move still up in the air.
