4K sanitation workers in Delhi to get PPE kits with 42 safety items
Each PPE kit will contain 42 safety items, including gas masks, helmets with lights, gloves, gumboots, protective suits, and barrier creams designed to guard against hazardous gases and skin infections. The kits are expected to be distributed before the onset of heavy rains, when manual sewer and septic tank cleaning becomes most dangerous.
Delhi's Social Welfare Minister Ravinder Indraj Singh said that directives had been issued to ensure all sanitation workers are also enrolled under the Ayushman Bharat health insurance scheme.
Departments have been instructed to speed up training and rehabilitation programmes and establish Emergency Response Sanitation Units. District magistrates have been told to settle all pending compensation cases related to sewer deaths in a time-bound manner. 'The safety of every sanitation worker is our priority. They must have access to PPE kits and health insurance before the monsoon,' Singh said.
However, the announcement has sparked criticism from activists who argue that the state should move beyond temporary safety measures. Bezwada Wilson, founder of the Safai Karamchari Andolan, welcomed the distribution of safety gear but said it doesn't address the root of the problem.
'This step is welcome, but it still does not prevent the deaths of manual scavengers,' Wilson said, calling for the complete mechanisation of sewer cleaning in compliance with the Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and Their Rehabilitation Act, 2013.
Wilson also highlighted grim statistics: 102 manual scavengers died in 2023, 116 in 2024, and 30 have died in 2025 so far, including four deaths in Delhi alone. 'The focus must shift from protective gear to ending the practice altogether,' Wilson stressed.

108 CHCs identified for laxity in implementation of Ayushman Bharat scheme
At least 108 community health centres (CHCs) have been identified by officials of the State Agency For Comprehensive Health and Integrated Services (SACHIS) where Ayushman Bharat scheme is not being implemented properly due to issues in pre-authorisation. (Pic for representation only) A virtual meet was organised by SACHIS to discuss implementation of Ayushman Bharat scheme at CHCs. The meeting was attended by chief medical officers and other officials of the districts. During the review it was found that 108 CHCs do not run the scheme properly due to issues in pre-authorisation. In the meeting officials were asked to ensure all CHCs start facilitating the patients who have Ayushman Bharat cards. The officials were told to ensure in the next meeting that the scheme was implemented properly. 'With the payment received by the other CHCs in the state, several new equipment have been purchased that have improved the treatment facility and also incentive for the medical team. This has motivated staff at many CHCs and the same is being expected at all places,' said a press statement. Ayushman Bharat card provides ₹5 lakh cashless treatment for various health problems. A community health centre caters to over 5,000 population. State has over 960 CHCs empanelled for Ayushman Bharat scheme.

Super-speciality treatment now accessible to poor in UP: Yogi
Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Sunday asserted that adequate advanced medical facilities, along with the Ayushman Bharat card, has made super-speciality treatment accessible to economically weaker sections struggling with medical expenses for themselves and their families. 'There is no dearth of funds for treatment. In the past one year alone, ₹1,100 crore has been disbursed from the CM Relief Fund without any discrimination or pick-and-choose policy,' the chief minister said. He said that super-speciality healthcare is now available in Gorakhpur, and common citizens are benefitting through Ayushman Bharat and the CM Jan Arogya Yojana. In cases where Ayushman coverage falls short, assistance will be provided from the CM Relief Fund or legislators' funds. The chief minister also launched the hospital's patient app 'Regency My Care' and inspected the facilities. He said that earlier, expensive treatments were beyond the reach of the poor, but are now becoming easily accessible. The new 250-bed Regency Hospital, with an 80-bed ICU, will serve patients from eastern Uttar Pradesh, north-west Bihar and even Nepal. Yogi Adityanath emphasised that the government's goal is to ensure equal healthcare access without discrimination. He recalled the days when eastern UP had very poor medical infrastructure and BRD Medical College was the only major centre in the region. He highlighted that today AIIMS Gorakhpur, new medical colleges across districts and advanced centres such as the cancer facility at BHU have transformed healthcare in the region. Dr Atul Kapoor, chairman and MD of Regency Hospital, said Regency Health was founded on the belief that world-class healthcare should not remain confined to big cities. 'With the launch of our new super-speciality hospital in Gorakhpur, we are fulfilling that vision by bringing advanced technology, specialised expertise, and compassionate care closer to the people of Purvanchal. This hospital is not just a medical institution—it is a lifeline for the entire region,' he said. Equipped with 80 ICU beds and eight modular operation theatres, the tertiary care facility offers comprehensive services across all major specialties. It also houses the region's first dedicated cardiac care unit with advanced Cath Lab, IVUS technology, and 24-hour bypass surgeons, making life-saving CABG (Coronary Artery Bypass Graft) surgeries accessible locally. This will eliminate the need to refer critical patients to Delhi or Lucknow. The hospital is also expected to generate employment for 800–900 local people. The ceremony was attended by Gorakhpur MP Ravi Kishan, MLA Mahendra Pal Singh, Domariyaganj MP Jagdambika Pal and Gorakhpur mayor Dr Manglesh Srivastav.
