Chinese hill painted white in botched attempt to mimic Mount Fuji sparks laughter

Indian Express04-05-2025
A tourist spot in China has gone viral for all the wrong reasons after painting a small hill white to look like Japan's famous Mount Fuji, South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported.
Located in Hebei province, the attraction called Universe Fantasy Land has drawn widespread laughter online. The white-topped hill, nicknamed the 'snow cap matcha volcano' by some, charges visitors 98 yuan (around £11), with a discounted online price of 78 yuan.
The site was designed as a fairy-tale escape for stressed-out city residents from Beijing. It includes a shiny lake, green grass, a white horse, and a cute wooden cottage, all meant to give a relaxing countryside feel, according to SCMP.
There's a fake Mount Fuji at 宇宙思想乐园 (cosmic thought park) in Linqi Valley (林栖谷), Yongqing County (永清县), Langfang (廊坊), Heibei, near Beijing…

But visitors quickly realised the 'mountain' was nothing more than a painted hill. 'Just a small hill with white paint on its top. It has nothing to do with Mount Fuji,' one tourist told SCMP. Another visitor added, 'You don't have to pay to see the real Mount Fuji, but here you're paying for a fake one.'
The management team, from Linqigu Real Estate Company, even referred to the hill as a 'volcano', adding weekend 'eruptions' with pink smoke for effect. A staff member told SCMP in April that the site has been improved since its opening in September last year.
Photos shared online show a staircase and a small door at the back of the hill, and a white horse is brought out for photo ops once a day.
Despite the magical marketing, many tourists felt misled. 'Just another case of people being tricked by glamorous photos,' said one visitor.
This is not the first time Hebei province has recreated famous landmarks. In the past, it has built replicas of the Eiffel Tower, the Great Sphinx, and even parts of the Great Wall.

‘Loser' turns hero: Village man builds stunning body following Japanese manga anime character's workout routine

Li Shuangyong from Shandong, China, once called himself a 'loser'. He was born in a village. His fish farming business failed, leaving him in debt. He was divorced. Feeling lost, he spent his days without purpose until he discovered the Japanese manga One-Punch Man. The hero, Saitama, is a broke, bald man who lives in a shabby flat. Saitama trains daily, not for fame or revenge, but to be a hero. After three years, Saitama could beat any monster with one punch. Li found inspiration and followed Saitama's workout routine for 1,000 days. His body transformation drew over one million followers on Chinese social media. Li's journey from despair to discipline has made him an online inspiration. Li followed the intense training of anime hero Saitama: 100 push-ups, 100 sit-ups, 100 squats and a 10 km run daily. The 36-year-old began his own journey on August 24, 2021, aiming for 1,000 days. His biggest struggle was money. He ran in shoes costing less than 10 yuan (about ₹ 122) and survived on eggs and instant noodles. 'I had to save myself. I could not keep living like that. It could not get any worse,' the South China Morning Post quoted Li as saying. Li recorded his progress and posted it online, which inspired many. His story attracted sponsors, helping him continue his routine and inspire others with his dedication. Fans sent him shoes and supplements. A Taiwan fan group even live-streamed his runs and trained with him online. 'I cannot believe he turned an anime workout into real life. That takes insane discipline,' SCMP quoted a social media user as saying. Another commented, 'Li's determination is inspiring, but most people should stick to more balanced, science-backed fitness and nutrition plans.' Li met his girlfriend during a marathon, who encouraged him throughout. On July 19, Li completed his 1,000-day challenge, running over 20,000 km and doing more than a million exercises. His body became strong, his outlook positive. To celebrate the final day, he shaved his head and dressed as Saitama to pay tribute to the manga hero. Li now plans to run a marathon every day for one year and create a Guinness World Record, the publication added.

China plans railway line to India's doorsteps, sparks twin concern

Almost 20 years ago, a passenger train cruised at 100 kmph over permafrost, 4,000 metres above sea level, on the Golmud-Lhasa section, for the first time. It linked the Forbidden City of Lhasa to China's rail network for the first time in 2006. Now, China is pushing the rail network on the Roof of the World, Tibet, deeper. It is all set to begin construction of the Tibet-Xinjiang (northwestern province) railway project through Aksai Chin, and right near the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with India, according to reports. The railway line will bring Chinese rail to India's doorstep and is likely to make New Delhi rail push through Aksai Chin is significant because a mega-infrastructure push by Mao's China in the region has precedent. Aksai Chin is an integral part of India but has been under Chinese occupation since China began constructing the Xinjiang-Tibet highway (G219) through Aksai Chin in the late 1950s, it became a major flashpoint leading to the 1962 India-China War. The planned railway line presents dual concerns for India. It will pass through India's Aksai Chin and run close to the LAC, which would help Beijing deploy troops and mobilise defence equipment faster to the border RAIL LINE TO CHENGDU FROM ARUNACHAL BORDER? Since the 2006 inauguration of railways to Tibet, two more lines have come up; the Lhasa-Shigatse rail in 2014, and the Lhasa–Nyingchi line in rail build-up along India's borders has become even more notable, given that the Lhasa-Nyingchi line runs southeast towards the Arunachal Pradesh border, with talks of extending it further east to Chengdu, which is a major military hub in western plans also include pushing the railway to Gyirong, the land port on the Nepal–Tibet border, and to Yadong county in the Chumbi Valley, at the India-Bhutan-China trijunction. This is the same sensitive spot where the 2017 Doklam military stand-off took place over China's road is now pushing tracks deeper into Tibet. It's just not Chinese dams near India's border, but rail tracks India's eastern sector, Chinese rail is set to come right at India's northern border, which is equally sensitive, and would be a matter of concern for India. A map showing operational railway lines in Tibet (solid lines) and upcoming rail projects in Tibet and Xinjiang (dotted lines). The new proposed Tibet-Xinjiang railway line will pass through Aksai Chin, like the Tibet-Xinjiang Highway. Note: This map is not to scale, and railway alignments are approximate and illustrative. Parts of the project that were originally planned in 2008 would run near the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with India, according to a South China Morning Post is expected to begin this year, and will be overseen by the newly formed Xinjiang-Tibet Railway Company (XTRC), a state-owned entity registered with 95-billion yuan ($13.2 billion) capital, fully owned by the China State Railway project will establish a 5,000-km plateau rail framework centred on Lhasa by 2035, with the 2,000-km Lhasa-Hotan (Xinjiang) line forming a strategic artery linking northwestern and southwestern China. The route will traverse the Kunlun, Karakoram, Kailash, and Himalayan mountain ranges, at an average elevation of over 4,500 metres, through glaciers, frozen rivers, and LAC's proximity makes this project strategically significant, as it would be passing through the disputed Aksai Chin region, according to reports from 2023, when the project saw some proposed railway will begin in Shigatse in Tibet, and run northwest along the Nepal border, before cutting north through Aksai Chin and ending in Hotan in Xinjiang," a February 2023 report in The Hindu CHINA'S ROAD CONSTRUCTION TRIGGERED 1962 WAROne of the triggers of the 1962 Indo-China War was Beijing's construction of the G219 highway through Aksai road project, initiated in the late 1950s, was strategically important for China as it connected Xinjiang and Tibet, two of its far-flung regions. India was unaware of the highway's existence until it appeared on Chinese maps, which caused significant diplomatic tensions."No one in India even knew about the road until it appeared on Chinese maps, sparking a diplomatic furore," American academic-author Salvatore Babones wrote in a column in The National Interest in July Chin is an integral part of India but occupied by China. The road construction was seen by India as an assertion of China's claim over the area. Border tensions escalated and that's what ultimately culminated in the brief but intense 1962 War, resulting in Chinese military advances into Indian then, China has also been constructing new lateral roads connecting to the existing G219 highway, which is aimed at quicker troop mobilisation and deployment in the region, Colonel Vinayak Bhat (retired) wrote for India Today Digital in this part, coinciding with India's northern sector, Chinese roads came first, and are now being followed by railways. But further south, along China's borders with Nepal, Bhutan, and India, both road and rail development have progressed RAIL EXTENSIONS NEAR INDIA'S EASTERN BORDERThe Lhasa-Nyingchi line, operational since 2021, runs southeast toward India's Arunachal Pradesh border, a region China has claimed to be one of the fingers of Tibet. This line is being extended to Chengdu in Sichuan, which is home to several defence manufacturing companies, like the Aviation Industry Corporation of China that makes the J-10 Vigorous Dragon fighter plans include rail lines to Gyirong, a land port on the Nepal-Tibet border, and Yadong county in the Chumbi Valley, near India's Sikkim and Bhutan. The Chumbi Valley is particularly sensitive and witnessed the 2017 Doklam stand-off between India and China over Chinese road construction near the rail extensions will significantly enhance China's ability to quickly move troops and supplies to contested border areas. These developments will undoubtedly ring alarm bells in India, given the heightened security Delhi has, as of 12 noon on Tuesday, August 12, not reacted to the report of the Chinese railway line "near the LAC".While India is ramping up its infrastructure along the Chinese border to match Beijing's edge and ensure quicker troop deployment, Beijing's planned rail link is not only ambitious but aggressive as well.- Ends

Imagine saying 'no' and losing over Rs 50 lakh: When a rare Labubu toy unleashed child's destructive side in influencer's home

A family visit in South China turned disastrous for influencer Little Azheng when a young relative, denied a rare Labubu doll, unleashed a destructive tantrum. The child's rampage resulted in a shattered mirror-glass ceiling and a demolished Italian crystal chandelier, racking up $56,000 in damages. Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads It started as an ordinary family visit in South China, and ended with smashed glass, a shattered chandelier, and a $56,000 bill.A popular South China influencer , known online as Little Azheng or Tail Brother, shared his nightmare on social media after a young relative's child came over. The boy spotted a rare Labubu doll in his home, beautifully decorated with jewellery, and demanded it. When told 'no', the child burst into tears, threw a tantrum, and then went into full destruction to the South China Morning Post, the boy grabbed a remote control and hurled it upwards, smashing a mirror-glass ceiling worth 100,000 yuan ($14,000). Not stopping there, he also damaged an Italian crystal chandelier worth a jaw-dropping 300,000 yuan ($42,000).Photos posted online showed the living room floor covered in glass shards, with the once-grand chandelier lying in pieces. 'The ceiling alone needs all glass panels removed and replaced,' the influencer explained. Shockingly, the child showed no hint of boy's parents reportedly pleaded with the influencer to 'let it go' to protect the child's feelings. Claiming they were too poor to cover the damage, they offered just 20,000 yuan ($2,800) in two instalments. 'Even if we sell everything, that's all we can pay,' they Little Azheng accepted the offer, later commenting, 'Elders love using family ties as emotional blackmail. It's incredibly over the line.'Labubu dolls have taken China, and the world, by storm. Collectors are willing to pay huge sums for rare pieces, with one figure selling for over one million yuan ($140,000) at a Beijing auction in June.
