St. Louis County voters reject Proposition B

Yahoo09-04-2025
ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. – St. Louis County voters rejected a key measure in Tuesday's municipal election. Proposition B, a proposal that would have expanded the St. Louis County Council's authority, has failed.
Had it passed, Proposition B would have granted the St. Louis County Council the authority to remove department heads with a 'super majority' vote, or approval from five of the county council's seven members.
Instead, the vote failed. A majority of voters (61.8%) voted 'no' on Proposition B, while only 38.2% voted 'yes.' More than 94,000 people cast votes on the measure, per the county's preliminary election results.
The proposition faced a great amount of scrutiny from St. Louis County department heads, even to the point of it reaching the Missouri Supreme Court. A lawsuit against the county council claimed that the ballot language was misleading to voters and failed to explain how the proposition would 'radically amend' St. Louis County law.

The Missouri Supreme Court ultimately sided with the county council to allow Proposition B to stay on the ballot.
Leading up to the election, St. Louis County Executive Sam Page had also been accused of improperly using public funds for fliers in opposition to Prop B.
Page shared the following statement via social media on voters rejecting Proposition B:
'Prop B was a bad idea. Voters saw through the deceptive language and saw it for what it was: an attempt to disrupt county government and make it harder to get business done. It is time to move on and focus on issues important to the daily lives of St. Louis County residents.'
Greater St. Louis, Inc. Interim CEO Dustin Allison issued the following statement on Proposition B:
'As the voice of the St. Louis region's business community, Greater St. Louis, Inc. expressed our strong opposition to Proposition B and encouraged St. Louis County voters to cast a 'no' vote. We are proud to stand with the voters of St. Louis County who voted down Proposition B.
'We look forward to working with the leaders of St. Louis County to drive growth and create more opportunity for the future.'

Bolton: No Ukraine-Russia peace deal ‘anywhere in the near future'

John Bolton, President Trump's former national security adviser, doubled down on his view that the president's summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska will not result in a peace deal. 'I don't think there's a peace deal anywhere in the near future,' Bolton told CNN's Jake Tapper on Friday. 'As long as Putin is advancing on the battlefield, even if it's 3 yards in a cloud of dust, he's not going to give up anything if he can get away with it,' he added. 'And I think here, I think the White House has lowered expectations precisely for the reason that it's too complicated to handle here.' Trump is meeting with Putin after greeting him at the airport earlier Friday, shaking hands with the Russian leader. Days before the meeting, the White House lowered expectations around the talks, calling the historic meeting a 'listening session' and 'feel-out meeting.' Trump this week also promised European leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that he would not negotiate giving up any Ukrainian territory with Putin. 'They'll be discussed, but I've got to let Ukraine make that decision. And I think they'll make a proper decision. But I'm not here to negotiate for Ukraine. I'm here to get them at a table,' Trump said Friday about Ukrainian territories. Bolton, in his Friday CNN interview, continued to criticize Trump's strategy on the Russia-Ukraine war. 'And I think the real measure of what we do here is to consider the failures of the past 3 1/2 years, to have a strategy on our side to do what was the stated position of every NATO member, the full restoration of Ukrainian sovereignty and territorial integrity,' he said. Bolton previously argued that the meeting is benefiting Russia. Putin's visit to Alaska his first time on U.S. soil since 2015. 'I think Putin has the initiative here, and I think his — what he's going to try to do is show to Trump that he has a peace plan and that it's sincere, even though I don't think it will be,' he said Wednesday on CNN's 'Anderson Cooper 360.'. Bolton reacts to hot-mic moment about Putin: ‘That's the way to Trump's heart'

Former national security adviser John Bolton said on Tuesday that President Trump's hot-mic moment at the White House on Monday reveals key insight into Russian President Vladimir Putin's approach to dealing with the U.S. president as he pushes for a diplomatic resolution to the war in Ukraine. Ahead of the White House meeting with several of Europe's most powerful leaders on Monday, Trump was captured on a hot mic telling French President Emmanuel Macron that he thinks Putin 'wants to make a deal.' 'I think he wants to make a deal for me,' Trump continued, referring to Putin. 'Do you understand that? As crazy as it sounds.' In an interview on CNN's 'The Situation Room,' Bolton zeroed in on Trump's use of the words, 'for me,' saying the phrase is 'evidence' of the message Putin likely conveyed to Trump when they met in Alaska on Friday. Bolton said he suspects Putin appealed to Trump's long-established desire to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for ending the war in Ukraine. 'It's Putin saying, as he possibly did in Alaska, 'Look, I can help you out here, Donald. You deserve the Nobel Peace Prize if you can bring peace here. And I want to help you. You know, this war never would have begun if you had been president,'' Bolton said, speculating about Putin's message to Trump during their private meeting. 'That's the way to Trump's heart,' Bolton added. Bolton said the fact the U.S. president thinks Putin wants to make a deal to help Trump personally is 'evidence of how Putin negotiated him — and Trump is so proud of it, he tells Macron.' Bolton, who served in the first Trump administration and has been a frequent critic of the president in the years since, expressed deep skepticism ahead of the Alaska meeting about the prospects of a peace deal. Bolton also served as the former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. 'And I think here, I think the White House has lowered expectations precisely for the reason that it's too complicated to handle here.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Trump raises prospect of Ukraine attacks on Russia: ‘Impossible' to win without attacking invader country

President Trump on Thursday promised 'interesting times ahead' as he raised the prospect of Ukraine launching an offensive against Russia, amid signs that the Kremlin could be slow-walking progress on a peace deal. In a post on Truth Social, the president seemed to justify a hypothetical offensive against Russia and criticized the Biden administration's longstanding policy against Ukraine using U.S. long-range missiles to attack inside Russia. 'It is very hard, if not impossible, to win a war without attacking an invaders country. It's like a great team in sports that has a fantastic defense, but is not allowed to play offense. There is no chance of winning! It is like that with Ukraine and Russia,' Trump wrote in his post. 'Crooked and grossly incompetent Joe Biden would not let Ukraine FIGHT BACK, only DEFEND. How did that work out? Regardless, this is a war that would have NEVER happened if I were President – ZERO CHANCE,' he continued. 'Interesting times ahead!!!' Two weeks after Trump's 2024 victory, former President Biden authorized a major shift in U.S. policy to allow Ukraine to use long-range U.S. missiles to attack sites in Russia. Trump, at the time, sharply criticized the decision, calling it 'stupid' and saying he 'might' consider reversing the decision, adding, 'I think it was a very stupid thing to do.' 'I don't think that should have been allowed, not when there's a possibility — certainly not just weeks before I take over,' Trump said at a press conference at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida last December. 'Why would they do that without asking me what I thought? I wouldn't have had him do that. I think it was a big mistake.' Lawmakers in both parties generally offered support for the shift, with some Republicans saying the move was welcome but came too late. Other Republicans, including many of Trump's supporters, echoed the president's sentiment and called the move escalatory. Trump's latest public musing about a hypothetical Ukrainian offensive comes as Russian officials have expressed some doubt about early prospects of a peace deal, including on potential security guarantees for Kyiv and a bilateral meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
