Nora Aunor, an actor among the Philippines' biggest stars, dies at 71
MANILA, Philippines, April 17, (AP): Nora Aunor, who became one of the biggest stars of Philippine cinema during a career that spanned seven decades, has died.
Aunor died Wednesday, according to social media posts from her children. She was 71. No further details on the cause or place of her death were immediately given.
Filipina actor Lotlot de León said on Instagram that her mother "touched generations with her unmatched talent, grace, and passion for the craft. Her voice, presence, and artistry shaped a legacy that will never fade.'
De León said funeral plans and other details will be shared later.
Aunor, born Nora Cabaltera Villamayor to an impoverished family in eastern Camarines Sur province, sold water in a train station in her hometown in her youth. She first gained fame in her teens as a singer in the 1960s before moving on to movies. She amassed more than 200 credits in film and television that included many classics of Philippine cinema, and won dozens of acting awards.
Memorable roles included 1976's "Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos' ("Three Years Without God'), 1984's "Bulaklak sa City Jail' ("Flowers of the City Jail') and 1995's "The Flor Contemplacion Story.'
She swept best actress awards in the country for her performance in 1990's "Andrea, Paano ba ang Maging Isang Ina?' ("Andrea, What is It Like to be a Mother?') and won best actress at the Asian Film Awards for her portrayal of a midwife in 2012's "Thy Womb.'
Aunor was still acting as recently as last year, starring in the film "Mananambal' ("The Healer") and appearing on the TV series "Lilet Matias, Attorney-at-Law.'
Aunor was named a National Artist for Film and Broadcast Arts - the country's biggest honor for actors - in 2022. In 2014, then-President Benigno Aquino III had denied her the honor because of a previous drug arrest in the U.S., provoking broad outcry.
Aunor's lawyer said the 2005 arrest at the Los Angeles airport came because of a pipe found in a bag she did not pack, noting she was traveling with four assistants at the time. The charges were dropped in 2007 after she completed a diversion program, her lawyer said in 2014.
Aunor was married to actor Christopher de León from 1975 until 1996.

Renée Victor, voice of Abuelita in Pixar's 'Coco,' dies at 86
LOS ANGELES, June 3, (AP): Renée Victor, who voiced the no-nonsense, sandal-throwing Abuelita in Disney's animated hit "Coco' and played the wisecracking Lupita on Showtime's "Weeds,' has died. She was 86. Victor's death was confirmed on Monday by a representative, Julie Smith, who said the actor had lymphoma for several years. She died Friday at her home in Sherman Oaks, California, Smith said, with family by her side. A post on the Instagram feed of Pixar, which produced "Coco,' said: "We are heartbroken to hear of the passing of Renée Victor, the voice (of) Abuelita in 'Coco' and an incredible part of the Pixar family. We will always remember you.' Victor appeared in 22 episodes of "Weeds' as sassy housekeeper Lupita between 2005 and 2012, among many other TV credits including "ER,' "Matlock' and "The Addams Family.' But she was perhaps best known for what she called the chancla-throwing grandmother in "Coco,' the 2017 family-friendly movie that explored death through the journey of a young Mexican boy to the land of the dead. She also taught Latin dancing, including the salsa and tango. 'King Of The Hill' voice actor Jonathan Joss fatally shot outside his Texas home
HOUSTON, June 3, (AP): Jonathan Joss, a voice actor best known for his work on the animated television series "King of the Hill,' was fatally shot near his Texas home, authorities said Monday. Police were dispatched to a home in south San Antonio about 7 p.m. Sunday on a shooting in progress call. When officers arrived at the scene, they found the wounded 59-year-old near the street. "The officers attempted life-saving measures until EMS arrived. EMS pronounced the victim deceased,' San Antonio police said in a statement. Joss' husband, Tristan Kern de Gonzales, confirmed the actor's death to The Associated Press in a text. The two were married earlier this year on Valentine's Day. In an email, San Antonio police did not immediately provide any information on what prompted the shooting. In a statement, de Gonzales said he and Joss had previously faced harassment, much of it "openly homophobic.' Joss' husband said the person who killed the actor yelled "violent homophobic slurs' before opening fire. "He was murdered by someone who could not stand the sight of two men loving each other,' de Gonzales said. Before the shooting, de Gonzales and Joss were checking mail at Joss' home, which had been heavily damaged during a January fire that claimed the lives of their three dogs. A man approached the two and threatened them with a gun, de Gonzales said. "Jonathan and I had no weapons. We were not threatening anyone. We were grieving. We were standing side by side. When the man fired Jonathan pushed me out of the way. He saved my life,' de Gonzales said in a statement. After the shooting, authorities arrested 56-year-old Sigfredo Alvarez Ceja and charged him with murder in Joss' death. Court records did not list an attorney who could speak on behalf of Ceja, who was being held in the Bexar County Adult Detention Center. In a statement, San Antonio police said its investigation "has found no evidence whatsoever to indicate that Mr. Joss's murder was related to his sexual orientation." "We take such allegations very seriously and have thoroughly reviewed all available information. Should any new evidence come to light, we will charge the suspect accordingly," police said. Joss, who grew up in San Antonio, was best known as the voice of John Redcorn, a Native American character on the popular "King of the Hill' animated series that ran for 13 seasons from 1997 to 2008. A reboot of the show is set to start in August. Joss also had a recurring role on the television show "Parks and Recreation,' playing Chief Ken Hotate. He appeared in two episodes of the series "Tulsa King' in 2022. A GoFundMe page had been set up in January for Joss after the house fire. According to the page, Joss had lost all of his belongings in the fire, including his vehicle. Before he was fatally shot, Joss had been in Austin, located about 80 miles (130 kilometers) northeast of San Antonio, for events related to a sneak peak of the "King of the Hill' revival. On Saturday, Joss had posted a video on Instagram in which he said he was signing autographs at a comic book store in Austin. "The fans get to revisit 'King of the Hill' again, which I think is an amazing thing because it's a great show,' Joss said in the video, adding he had already done voice work on four episodes of the revival. Joss' husband said Joss was grateful for his fans.
