Daewoong secures largest Latin America deal for Nabota

Daewoong Pharmaceutical announced Friday that it had signed a 180 billion won ($135 million) botulinum toxin export contract, marking the largest deal it has ever secured in the Latin American market.
The company inked a five-year export contract for Nabota with its Brazilian partner, Moksha8 Pharmaceuticals, marking a tenfold increase from their 2018 deal worth 18 billion won.
Brazil is the world's third-largest medical aesthetics market, following the United States and China, and is also known as the leading country in Latin America for botulinum toxin sales.
According to market research firm Mordor Intelligence, the Brazilian botulinum toxin market has been growing steadily at an annual rate of 9.7 percent. This year, it is expected to reach some $228 million.
Moksha8 Pharmaceuticals plans to strengthen its presence in Brazil with the Nabota 200-unit product, a high-dose version that obtained approval last month. Daewoong Pharmaceutical expects that the product's launch will broaden customer options for large hospitals and clinics with a high patient volume, as they favor high-dose products.
Meanwhile, the company aims to leverage its success in Brazil to strengthen Nabota's brand recognition across Latin America. The company's botulinum toxin has already made successful inroads into major South American markets such as Argentina, Chile and Peru. Globally, Nabota has received product approval in 69 countries and established partnerships in over 80 countries.
Nabota is a premium botulinum toxin manufactured using Korea and US-patented Hi-Pure Technology, and a vacuum-drying process, ensuring a high purity of over 98 percent. It delivers fast and precise effects while minimizing the occurrence of inactive toxins that could cause resistance.
"The contract demonstrates Nabota's global competitiveness in the botulinum toxin market," said Yoon Joon-soo, head of Daewoong Pharmaceutical's Nabota Business Division. 'We will further expand our presence in Brazil while actively targeting key Latin American markets such as Argentina, Chile and Peru.'

WASHINGTON -- A senior Seoul official said Friday that it is still uncertain whether US President Donald Trump's pause on "reciprocal" tariffs on South Korea will be extended next month, as the Asian country has highlighted its commitment to "good-faith" trade talks with the United States. The official made the remarks although the Trump administration has signaled an openness to extending the pause on the new tariffs, which is slated to end on July 8. The tariffs, including 25 percent duties on South Korea, took effect on April 9, but Trump suspended them until July 8 to allow for negotiations. "I don't think we are now in a situation where we can feel assured. It is still not certain as to the degree of possibility that the Trump administration will extend the pause for all countries and continue negotiations when the July 8 deadline comes," the official told reporters in Washington. "Some countries could perhaps reach a deal (with the United States). The pause could be extended for some others, while others could face higher tariffs with the pause not extended for them. So it seems that various possibilities remain open," he added. Earlier in the day, Trump said that he would like to make the pause "shorter," though he still reiterated the possibility of its extension. The official anticipated that the pause could be extended for countries that Washington thinks have demonstrated "good faith" in trade talks, while those that are deemed to have shown a lack of good faith could face some form of penalty. "It is true that there has not been much progress in the trade talks (between Korea and the US) due to the domestic political environment, compared with other countries," he said. "There is still time left -- though it's less than two weeks (until July 8) -- and I understand that President Trump will make the final decision." He was referring to a period of political turmoil in Seoul, which was caused in the aftermath of ousted former President Yoon Suk Yeol's short-lived martial law declaration in December. Less than two weeks into office, Seoul's Trade Minister Yeo Han-koo visited Washington this week and held talks with US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer to discuss tariffs and other related issues. Also this week, the South Korean working-level delegation, led by Deputy Minister for International Trade and Investment Park Jung-sung, had the third round of "technical discussions" with the US on tariffs and other topics. During a press briefing held earlier in the day in Washington, Yeo vowed to make utmost efforts to reach a "mutually beneficial" trade agreement with the US. "During my stay here, I have demonstrated South Korea's good faith and intention to make a mutually beneficial deal through South Korea-US trade talks," Yeo said, noting that he had more than 30 meetings with U.S. government, congressional and other officials in the US capital this week. During the talks with US officials, Yeo stressed trade talks should deal with all reciprocal and sectoral tariffs, including those that the Trump administration is considering rolling out in the future. Seoul has been seeking exemptions from reciprocal tariffs and new duties on steel, aluminum and automobiles. The minister cast the ongoing trade talks as an opportunity for Seoul and Washington to build a new framework for strategic cooperation in various areas, including artificial intelligence, semiconductor, shipbuilding, electric vehicles and nuclear energy. KakaoTalk is finally testing typing indicators. For many Koreans, it just feels wrong

For 15 years, South Korea's iconic messaging app KakaoTalk thrived without a feature so basic that most of us never noticed it was missing until now. Since its launch in 2010, KakaoTalk has uniquely dominated South Korean communication, standing apart from global giants like Apple and Meta. Rather than WhatsApp and iMessage, Koreans have always relied heavily on homegrown platforms, particularly KakaoTalk. Yet, strangely enough, KakaoTalk never had a simple feature that was included in almost every other chat app or service worldwide: the typing indicator. Then, in May, KakaoTalk introduced the feature on a trial basis. It triggered a wave of strong reactions, most of them negative. The company said the goal was to 'support uninterrupted communication and offer an experience closer to offline conversation.' Many users labeled the update intrusive, anxiety-inducing, and unnecessarily transparent, while a minority welcomed it as a long overdue catch-up. International observers, familiar with typing indicator features on apps like WhatsApp or iMessage, quickly attributed this controversy to Korea's cultural preference for subtlety and indirect communication. The reasoning goes something like this: As a "high-context society," Koreans naturally resist real-time transparency that might undermine the nuanced, indirect nature of their interactions. However, the full story might be surprisingly more mundane. Rather than an intentional cultural decision, the initial absence of KakaoTalk's typing indicator likely resulted from practical, technical constraints. At its founding in 2010, KakaoTalk operated on an extremely lean budget with no clear business model; founder Kim Beom-soo reportedly paid server costs from his own pocket, which reached as high as 1 billion won (around $900,000 at the time) per month. This means that a typing indicator could have added a strain to Kakao's already overstretched resources. 'To be clear, this is just my speculation,' one former software engineer with experience in building smaller messaging services, who spoke anonymously, told The Korea Herald. "But typing indicators aren't as simple to implement as they seem. They require continuous, real-time communication between devices. During Kakao's early years, even ensuring stable and reliable message delivery was challenging enough, making typing indicators understandably a low priority." As KakaoTalk exploded in popularity and profitability over subsequent years, adding such a feature became more feasible. But by then, the company's attention had shifted to more commercially promising areas: emoticons, e-commerce integration, content offerings, and monetization strategies. 'During their explosive growth, it's pretty obvious that introducing a typing indicator wasn't exactly urgent or particularly lucrative, and so it might have remained shelved indefinitely,' the backend engineer said. At the same time, the absence of a typing indicator gradually shaped the nature of communication on KakaoTalk. Koreans increasingly viewed its absence not as a limitation, but as a valuable asset. Without the pressure of real-time typing notifications, users felt free to hesitate, reconsider, or rewrite messages without fear of judgment. Over time, this unintentional quiet space evolved into a cherished aspect of the app: aligning with local conversational norms. Thus, KakaoTalk's recent introduction of the typing indicator, even as an optional trial feature, disrupted more than just app functionality. It breached an implicit, quietly nurtured social agreement. "I use Slack and other apps with typing indicators all the time, and never even consciously thought about it," said Seo Ji-hyun, a 29-year-old human resources manager. "But on KakaoTalk, it somehow feels wrong. This app was one of the only places left where I could genuinely pause to think before replying." Some fear deeper ramifications, particularly in workplaces. KakaoTalk isn't merely a social platform; it serves as Korea's primary professional communication tool for companies, schools, and government offices alike. The lack of clear boundaries between personal and professional use exacerbates anxieties. "Supervisors might notice me typing something but not sending it, leading to unnecessary tension," worried one public school teacher in Seoul. "I don't want to have to explain why I rewrote a message." Despite widespread criticism, a smaller group of users welcomes the update. "I like seeing when someone is typing because at least I know they're not intentionally ignoring me," said Kim Do-yeon, a 22-year-old university student. "It's reassuring." Ultimately, whether KakaoTalk permanently adopts the typing indicator will likely depend on internal usage data available exclusively to the company. For now, the typing indicator is optional and must be manually activated in the app's Lab settings.

The overwhelming majority of US exports to South Korea are already tariff-free under a bilateral free trade agreement, a think tank report showed Wednesday, stressing that no "compelling" rationale has been found for the Trump administration's "reciprocal" tariffs on the Asian country. The Korea Economic Institute of America released the report, titled "Fairness and Reciprocity? Reconsidering Trump's Liberation Day Tariffs on South Korea," which looked into whether the United States' claims about unfair South Korean trade practices are accurate. President Donald Trump announced reciprocal tariffs on April 2 -- a day that he called "Liberation Day." Meant to match what other countries impose on US exports, the tariffs, including 25 percent duties on South Korea, took effect on April 9, but Trump paused them for 90 days on the same day to allow for negotiations. "In short, this report finds no compelling economic rationale for the Liberation Day tariff rate on South Korea," the report said. "This suggests that the tariffs are better understood as political tools rather than trade policy rooted in sound analysis." Citing data from the Korea Customs Service and US Department of Agriculture, the report estimated that South Korea's effective weighted average tariff on US imports last year ranged between 0.19 and 2.87 percent -- a finding that challenges the much higher figures that the Office of the US Trade Representative and Department of Commerce cite. Measured in trade value, 95 percent of US exports to South Korea are tariff-free under the bilateral FTA, with most remaining tariffs affecting a narrow range of agricultural products subject to quotas, the report said. Of the remaining 5 percent, tariffs will be eliminated from another 4 percent of US exports to South Korea by 2026, it said. Touching on non-tariff issues, the report took note of the fact that there are bilateral and multilateral mechanisms to address the issues "more satisfactorily" in an apparent show of concern over the US' unilateral move to address trade deficits. "Ultimately, this report concludes that there is little need to change the US-South Korea trade relationship," it said. "It recommends resolving outstanding concerns—especially those related to non-tariff measures—through established bilateral mechanisms under the bilateral FTA rather than unilateral action." South Korea and the US have been in consultations to reach a wide-ranging deal over US tariffs, South Korea's non-tariff barriers and economic and industrial cooperation, before July 8, when the suspension of reciprocal tariff ends. Seoul has been seeking to avoid or minimize the impact of new US tariffs, including sectoral tariffs on steel and automobiles. (Yonhap)
