Dhs400 fine for driving below minimum speed limit in UAE

Brigadier Juma Salem Bin Suwaidan, Acting Director of the General Department of Traffic at Dubai Police, stated that the fine for driving at an excessively slow speed below the minimum limit allowed on the road, according to the Federal Traffic Law, is Dhs400. He added that the fine also applies if the driver fails to give priority to vehicles coming from behind or from the overtaking lane.
Brigadier Bin Suwaidan explained that the right lane is designated for slower vehicles, while the left lane is for faster vehicles and overtaking.
He emphasised that driving at a very low speed can be as dangerous as exceeding the speed limit, as it disrupts traffic flow and endangers road users. He noted that a significant number of traffic accidents occur due to vehicles driving below the permitted speed—especially in the left lane—and failing to give way to other vehicles. This often leads to improper overtaking from the right, which can cause severe accidents.
Brigadier Bin Suwaidan urged motorists on both internal and external roads to adhere to safe driving practices and avoid overtaking from the right due to its high risk, which can result in fatalities or serious injuries.
He also stressed the importance of staying attentive and committed to the designated lane, changing lanes only after ensuring the road is clear and there is sufficient safe distance. He emphasised the use of light signals when changing lanes to alert other drivers and help preserve lives.
