Workington Reds part company with manager Mark Fell

Yahoo15-04-2025
Workington Reds have parted company with manager Mark Fell.
The Borough Park club have announced that Fell and his assistant Graham Lancashire have both left the club.
The decision comes with three games left in the Northern Premier League Premier Division season, with Workington still battling to avoid relegation.
Coaches Brian Dawson and Billy Redden have been placed in caretaker charge for the final games of the 2024/25 campaign.
Fell's departure follows Saturday's 1-0 defeat at Leek Town, with the Reds 17th in the table, three points above the relegation zone.

Workington said in a statement on behalf of their board: "Workington AFC can confirm that they have mutually agreed to part company with manager Mark Fell and his assistant Graham Lancashire.
"It has been a difficult decision for all parties to make and certainly not one anybody envisaged taking at this stage of the season.
"We'd like to place on record our thanks to Mark and Graham and their team for all their hard work during their time with the club and we wish them well in the future.
"The club's absolute number one priority is maintaining our Step 3 status.
"Brian Dawson and Billy Redden will take training tonight and will oversee the final three games of the season as we bid to secure the points we need.
"The club will start the process of appointing a new manager immediately."
Fell, the former Lancaster City boss, had been appointed at Borough Park at the end of last season as he replaced Danny Grainger.
In the league he has overseen 13 wins, seven draws and 19 defeats, as Workington struggle to get over the safety line in the closing stages of the campaign, amid their second season back in the NPL Premier.
Dawson and Redden are set to be in the dugout for Saturday's home clash with Prescot Cables. Reds then go to Morpeth Town on Easter Monday before their last game of the season against Ashton United at Borough Park.

Why is Ryan Gravenberch not playing for Liverpool vs Bournemouth?

Ryan Gravenberch was almost ever-present for Liverpool in 2024-25 as they embarked on a procession to Premier League glory. The all-action midfielder featured in 37 league games, chipping in with four assists, and he also featured nine times in the Champions League. However, he is not in the Reds' squad for the first game of their title defence at Anfield. Here, GOAL explains why the Netherlands international is not featuring in the 2025-26 Premier League opener. Why Ryan Gravenberch is not playing for Liverpool vs Bournemouth Gravenberch is not playing in Liverpool's opening game of the season against Bournemouth because he is suspended. The midfielder was sent off in the final game of the 2024-25 season against Crystal Palace after receiving a red card for a foul on Daichi Kamada. While the Liverpool star had already received a yellow card for simulation earlier in the game, referee Darren England produced a straight red card following the foul on Kamada, due to its severity and since Gravenberch was the last defender. Curtis Jones deputised for Gravenberch in the Community Shield defeat to Crystal Palace last week and could be primed to start again against Bournemouth. However, the Reds will be without Conor Bradley and Joe Gomez, with the defensive duo out of action due to injury. When is Ryan Gravenberch back? The suspension that carried over from last season is just for one game, so Gravenberch will be available for selection again when Liverpool play Newcastle United at St James' Park on August 25, 2025. Reds place rookie Chase Burns on IL with flexor strain

CINCINNATI — The Cincinnati Reds placed right-handed rookie starter Chase Burns on the 15-day injured list Friday with a grade 1 right flexor strain. The No. 2 pick in last year's draft has made eight starts this season and had recorded at least 10 strikeouts in four of his last five starts, with the lone exception coming in the game at Bristol Motor Speedway against the Atlanta Braves that was postponed in the bottom of the first. Burns struck out two of the three batters he faced in that game. Advertisement With Hunter Greene returning to the Reds' rotation on Wednesday, Burns was expected to move to the bullpen, but instead is now on the IL. The Reds recalled left-hander Joe La Sorsa from Triple-A Louisville to join the bullpen and replace Burns on the roster. Burns last start was on Aug. 8 in Pittsburgh. He went six innings and allowed just one run on three hits with 10 strikeouts and one walk, but didn't factor in the decision. Overall this season, he's 0-3 with a 5.24 ERA. That ERA, though, is inflated by his second big-league outing that saw him give up five earned runs (and seven total) in just one-third of an inning against the Boston Red Sox. The Reds suspected the Red Sox saw Burns was tipping his pitches. He struck out seven Philadelphia Phillies and allowed just one run on two hits in 4 2/3 innings in his next start. In his 34 1/3 MLB innings, Burns has 57 strikeouts and 13 walks. His ERA with the start in Boston excluded is 3.97. After flying through the minor leagues, Burns struck out the first four batters he faced in the big leagues in his MLB debut on June 24 against the New York Yankees, including a strikeout of Aaron Judge to finish off his first inning. While the Reds weren't counting on Burns staying in the rotation — he has thrown 100 1/3 innings between the minors and majors this season, one out more than he threw as a junior at Wake Forest in 2024. Earlier this week, Reds manager Terry Francona said the team hoped Burns would pitch until the end of the season, using the move to the bullpen as a way to keep his innings down. Spot the pattern. Liverpool announce Giovanni Leoni signing ahead of Premier League season opener

Liverpool have officially announced the signing of Italian centre-back Giovanni Leoni. The 18-year-old arrives from Parma for a reported fee of £26million plus add-ons and is not expected to be loaned out, instead becoming an instant option for Arne Slot's backline as the Reds look to defend their Premier League title. After passing a medical, Leoni signed a long-term contract with the Merseyside club today and will wear the No15 shirt. Last year brought a breakthrough spell in Serie A for the teenager, who made 17 appearances and scored one goal in his sole season in Italy's top flight after being signed by Parma last summer. Benvenuto, Giovanni 👋 — Liverpool FC (@LFC) August 15, 2025 Upon his unveiling, Leoni told Liverpool's club website: 'I'm very happy to be here. It's a really great sensation and I'm honoured to be here.' He added: 'Yeah, a lot [of excitement]. I'm so honoured. I was very happy [about Liverpool being interested]. When I saw this I said, 'Wow, this is crazy.' I'm very happy.' The Rome-born centre-back, who stands tall at 6ft4in, has represented Italy at youth international level. Slot's men are in action tonight to kick off the new campaign with the visit of Bournemouth to Anfield. After spending heavily on their frontline this summer, Liverpool are seeking reinforcements in defence as Ibrahima Konate enters the final year of his contract. Leoni is seen a strong option for the future, viewed by some as a successor to Virgil van Dijk. His arrival comes as the Reds continue to court Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi, who will begin the season at Selhurst Park but could be tempted by a move away with a few more weeks to go until transfer deadline day. Leoni's move takes Liverpool's outlay over £300m this summer. That is £321.5m in paid transfer fees so far, which is currently the third-biggest transfer outlay from a Premier League club in a single window.
